Did BMW really charge a subscription for heated seats?
Yes. In some markets, BMW offered access to heated seats through its Functions on Demand system. The seats’ heating hardware was already in the vehicle; customers paid to activate it rather than receiving a separate seat or retrofit kit. Ars Technica reported that BMW began offering subscriptions for some factory-installed hardware features, including heated seats and adaptive cruise control, in markets such as the UK and South Korea in 2020. The offer was not universal. Ars Technica reported that BMW North America did not offer subscriptions for hardware features, so the heated-seat policy should not be read as something U.S. BMW owners generally faced.
What did the heated-seat subscription cost?
Prices varied by market and access period. PC-WELT reported historical South Korean prices in July 2022 of about €180 for one year, €280 for three years, or €390 for unlimited heated-seat access. It also reported heated steering-wheel access at €9 per month. These are reported conversions for South Korea at that time, not current prices or universal BMW terms. PC-WELT

Why did BMW stop charging to activate heated seats?
BMW’s explanation centered on customer reaction and uptake. Nota said some customers felt they were paying twice for equipment already in the car. He said that perception was not accurate to BMW’s view of the economics, but acknowledged its importance: “People feel that they paid double—which was actually not true, but perception is reality, I always say.” Ars Technica reported that low uptake and dissatisfaction contributed to the decision; the coverage does not provide a customer survey or a measured backlash figure.
In September 2023, Nota said BMW would no longer offer seat heating this way: “It’s either in or out. Did BMW abandon all car-feature subscriptions?
No. BMW said it would keep Functions on Demand for certain software- and service-related features, rather than use it to charge separately for this kind of factory-installed hardware. Nota described the focus as “software and service-related products, like driving assistance and parking assistance,” as reported by Ars Technica. The distinction is between unlocking physical equipment already fitted to a car and offering software or services that can be enabled later. The 2023 announcement does not establish which options are available now in every market or vehicle; those details can vary.
