Choose the BMW M5 when rapid road performance and a high-output powertrain are your priorities. Choose the Toyota Land Cruiser when standard four-wheel-drive hardware, trail-oriented equipment, five-seat SUV practicality, and rated towing matter more. These are not equivalent vehicle types: the M5 is a performance sedan, while the Land Cruiser is an off-road-focused hybrid SUV.

What each vehicle is designed to do
The M5 is a performance-first road car
The M5’s defining proposition is its powertrain and road performance. A V8 plug-in hybrid system, eight-speed automatic transmission, and M xDrive all-wheel drive place it in the high-output sedan category. BMW also lists a two-wheel-drive capability, giving the drivetrain more configuration range than a permanently locked four-wheel-drive system.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful M sedan - The BMW F90 M5 Competition combines everyday suitability with motorsport feeling in 1:43 scale
- Distinctive play of colours - Bold green meets black roof, mirrors and rims for dynamic contrasts
- Sporty design features - Large air intakes, wide bumpers, side trim openings and strong shoulder line
- Finely crafted - Black multi-spoke wheels with red calipers, clear headlights and precise body joints
- Solido - Model Cars for Home: Since 1932, we have stood for detailed diecast models of iconic vehicles - from classic vintage cars to modern sports cars, for collectors and automotive enthusiasts worldwide
That specification is relevant if your normal use is paved-road commuting, highway travel, or spirited driving on appropriate closed courses. The published acceleration estimate is the clearest numeric expression of the M5’s mission, but it should not be treated as a promise that every car will reproduce the same time. Tire choice, surface, temperature, charge state, and launch conditions can all affect an actual run; BMW’s own qualification is the limit of what can responsibly be claimed here.
The Land Cruiser is an SUV built around traction and utility
The Land Cruiser starts from a different brief. Toyota presents it as a five-seat hybrid SUV for off-road use, and its standard equipment centers on continuous four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and electronic systems intended to help the driver manage difficult surfaces. Its body style also gives it the practical format expected by buyers who carry people, equipment, or recreational gear.
The Toyota’s lower listed horsepower is not evidence that it is a failed performance vehicle; it reflects a different target. The relevant questions are whether you need controlled low-speed traction, a rated trailer limit, and an SUV cabin rather than sedan acceleration. If those needs dominate, the Land Cruiser’s specification is more directly aligned with them.
How the powertrains differ
BMW: V8 plug-in hybrid and M xDrive
BMW lists a 4.4-liter V8 paired with a plug-in hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The manufacturer quotes 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. M xDrive all-wheel drive is listed, along with the ability to operate in two-wheel drive.
BMW’s published material does not establish an electric-only range, charging time, battery capacity, or a final MPGe result. Do not infer any of those figures from the fact that the M5 is a plug-in hybrid. For a purchase decision, ask the dealer for the exact model-year specification and the charging and efficiency data that apply to the car being offered.
Toyota: i-FORCE MAX hybrid
Toyota lists a 2.4-liter four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Its published output is 326 net combined horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. “Net combined” is Toyota’s system-level rating; it should not be compared with a gasoline-engine-only rating as though the measurement method were identical.

- Brand new box, Comes in a blister pack.
- Real rubber tires, Authentic detail.
- Detailed interior, Exterior.
- Authentic Paint & Graphics
- Die-cast metal body and chassis
The Toyota’s hybrid system is integrated with a conventional SUV drivetrain rather than presented as a plug-in vehicle in the published specifications. Toyota’s published specifications do not provide a plug-in charging requirement for the Land Cruiser, so buyers should not assume that home charging is part of normal operation.

Which one is quicker?
On the numbers supplied by the manufacturers, the M5 has the clear acceleration advantage. BMW’s preliminary 0–60 mph estimate is 3.4 seconds. Toyota does not provide a comparable 0–60 figure in the cited Land Cruiser material, so a measured acceleration ranking cannot be stated beyond BMW’s published estimate.
The 717-hp versus 326-net-hp gap is 391 horsepower, and the BMW’s listed torque exceeds the Toyota’s by 273 pound-feet. Those arithmetic differences explain why the vehicles occupy different performance categories, but they do not predict braking distance, cornering speed, ride comfort, or track durability. No independent road test is cited for this comparison.
Use the M5’s acceleration specification as a reason to choose it for performance-oriented road driving, not as an invitation to test the limit on public roads. Any evaluation should follow local laws and take place in an appropriate controlled environment.
Which is better for off-roading?
Land Cruiser hardware and controls
The Land Cruiser has the stronger off-road case because Toyota specifies the hardware directly. Full-time 4WD continuously sends power to the front and rear axles, and the electronically controlled two-speed transfer case provides a low-range mode for demanding terrain. Toyota also lists Crawl Control as standard and Multi-Terrain Select as available.

Crawl Control is intended to help manage a steady low speed while the driver concentrates on steering. Multi-Terrain Select lets the driver choose a terrain-oriented setting when equipped. These systems do not remove the need for correct tire pressure, route judgment, recovery equipment, and safe spotting; they are aids, not substitutes for preparation.
What the M5 specification does—and does not—establish
M xDrive gives the M5 all-wheel-drive traction, and BMW lists two-wheel-drive capability. That is useful context for road performance and driver preference, but BMW’s published material does not list a low-range transfer case, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, ground-clearance figures, approach and departure angles, or a towing rating. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the sedan as an alternative to the Land Cruiser for technical trails.
If your routes include unpaved access roads but not sustained low-speed trail work, the decision may depend on local conditions and your willingness to accept sedan format. For rock, mud, steep loose surfaces, or regular trail use, the Toyota’s specified four-wheel-drive equipment is the relevant advantage.
Which one can tow more?
Toyota publishes a 6,000-pound towing capacity for the Land Cruiser. That is a manufacturer rating, so the allowable trailer depends on the exact configuration, hitch equipment, payload, passengers, tongue weight, and local requirements. Check the vehicle’s certification label and owner’s documentation before matching it with a trailer.
No BMW towing capacity appears in BMW’s published M5 material. Do not assign the BMW a towing limit by analogy with another model or by relying on the sedan’s engine output. If towing is a buying requirement, the Land Cruiser is the only vehicle in this comparison with a stated capacity.
For either vehicle, calculate the complete loaded combination: trailer, cargo, passengers, fuel, accessories, and tongue weight. A trailer that falls below the headline capacity can still exceed the vehicle’s payload or axle limits.

How much does each one cost?
BMW lists the M5 Sedan from $123,300 in the United States. Toyota lists the Land Cruiser 1958 from $57,600 and the Land Cruiser trim from $63,675. The BMW therefore starts $65,700 above the 1958 and $59,625 above the higher-listed Land Cruiser trim.

What the trim choice changes
The Land Cruiser 1958 and Land Cruiser trim have separate starting prices, so identify the trim before comparing equipment or an advertised payment. The published material establishes the names and prices but does not provide a complete option-by-option equipment delta. Request a window sticker for the exact vehicle, especially if Multi-Terrain Select, towing hardware, protection parts, or other trail equipment is important to you.
The M5 is presented as a single starting sedan listing in BMW’s published pricing material. Its final price will depend on selected options and the dealer’s current offer. Confirm that the technical specifications and price refer to the same model year; BMW’s technical page path does not make the model year explicit in the captured material.

The BMW technical page captured for this comparison did not publish a combined MPGe figure. Because the BMW figure is incomplete and the Toyota figure is an estimate, the available evidence cannot support a fair winner on fuel or energy cost. A plug-in hybrid’s real-world operating cost also depends on how often it is charged and how much driving occurs on electricity, information not established here.

Daily usability, seating, and cargo decisions
When the sedan format works
The M5 suits a buyer who wants a performance sedan and does not need the seating height, cargo opening, or trail-oriented underbody equipment associated with an SUV. BMW’s published source does not establish a seating count, rear cargo volume, door-opening measurements, or roof-load rating. Measure child-seat locations, luggage, and parking space against the actual car before ordering.
When the SUV format works
The Land Cruiser’s five-seat layout and SUV body support a different set of routines: carrying passengers and bulky gear, reaching campsites or remote properties, and towing within its rated limit. Toyota’s published specification confirms five seats, but the supplied material does not establish cargo volume behind the second row, maximum payload, or interior dimensions. Confirm those figures if bikes, kennels, tools, or large cases are part of your regular load.

Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser model page introduces its safety equipment under the heading “The 2026 Land Cruiser is DESIGNED FOR SAFETY AND EQUIPPED WITH” and follows that heading with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features. The supplied material does not provide a complete feature-by-feature list or a comparative BMW safety specification, so this article does not claim that one vehicle has a superior safety system.

Ownership checks before you buy
- Confirm the model year. The Land Cruiser figures are identified as 2026. BMW’s captured technical-page path does not clearly identify the model year, so match the VIN, window sticker, and specification sheet.
- Verify the live price. Check destination charges, dealer-installed accessories, incentives, financing terms, and any local adjustment instead of treating the starting MSRP as an out-the-door quote.
- Match equipment to the mission. For the Land Cruiser, confirm whether the specific vehicle has available Multi-Terrain Select and the towing equipment you need. For the M5, verify the drivetrain and options on the actual build.
- Get the correct efficiency label. BMW’s captured MPGe field was not published; obtain current EPA data before estimating energy costs. Keep Toyota’s city/highway numbers labeled as estimates.
- Check physical fit. Measure your garage, trailer, child seats, cargo, and parking route. Do not infer seating or cargo capacity from exterior appearance.
- Price the full ownership package. Obtain insurance, registration, maintenance, tire, fuel, electricity, and financing estimates for your ZIP code. A comparative ownership-cost study was not established for these vehicles.
- Prepare the SUV correctly. If you choose a Land Cruiser, all-weather floor mats can be a sensible protection accessory, but verify the exact model year and trim fitment before purchase.
A decision framework for common buyers
| If your highest priority is… | Better starting point | Why | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum straight-line road performance | BMW M5 | Its manufacturer-listed output and preliminary acceleration estimate are far more performance-focused. | Exact model year, tire and option specification, and current EPA data. |
| Regular technical trails | Toyota Land Cruiser | Full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, Crawl Control, and available Multi-Terrain Select are specified. | Trim equipment, tires, clearance-related requirements, and recovery gear. |
| Towing a trailer | Toyota Land Cruiser | A 6,000-pound capacity is published; no BMW rating is established here. | Payload, tongue weight, hitch equipment, and the exact certification label. |
| Lowest entry price | Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 | Its listed starting MSRP is substantially below either the higher Land Cruiser trim or the M5. | Destination, dealer pricing, incentives, and local availability. |
| Five-seat SUV practicality | Toyota Land Cruiser | Toyota specifies five seats and an SUV body. | Cargo dimensions and child-seat fit for your own gear. |
| Plug-in-hybrid ownership | BMW M5 | BMW identifies the M5 powertrain as plug-in hybrid. | Electric range, charging requirements, and current MPGe for the exact vehicle. |
Bottom line: choose by mission, not horsepower alone
The BMW M5 and Toyota Land Cruiser are alternatives only after you define the job. The M5 is the logical choice for a buyer who wants a high-output, all-wheel-drive performance sedan and accepts its substantially higher starting price and unresolved efficiency details in the available BMW material.
The Land Cruiser is the logical choice for a buyer who needs a five-seat SUV with standard full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, trail-control systems, and a published towing rating. Its lower entry price broadens access, but the final decision still depends on trim, local pricing, trailer payload, and the equipment on the specific vehicle.
