The BMW M4 Coupe has two chassis generations in BMW’s official history: the F82 and the G82. The F82 era is dated 2014–2020 by BMW M; the G82 timeline includes selected entries for 2022 and 2024, but BMW cautions that its heritage timeline is incomplete. These chassis-generation dates are not a complete model-year list for every market.
How many BMW M4 Coupe generations are there?
BMW’s official material identifies two M4 Coupe chassis generations: F82 and G82. The M4 name began with the F82-era coupe, while BMW kept the M3 name for the sedan and used separate M4 naming for coupe and convertible body styles. The M4 name therefore does not apply to earlier M3 coupes.
BMW M describes the broader F80/F82/F83 generation—the M3 sedan, M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible—as spanning 2014–2020. That is the production period BMW gives for the related body styles, rather than a market-by-market model-year catalog. BMW M’s generation retrospective and BMW’s M heritage timeline provide the official chronology.

BMW’s heritage page is useful for identifying notable milestones, but it should not be read as proof that the G82 began in 2022 or that no G82 M4 existed before the 2024 entry. Its own completeness warning rules out treating those entries as an exhaustive year-by-year record.

F82: the first BMW M4 Coupe
The F82 introduced the M4 Coupe name in 2014, alongside the F80 M3 sedan. BMW’s naming change separated the coupe and convertible from the sedan; it did not mark the beginning of BMW’s high-performance coupe lineage, but the start of the M4 badge.
Engine and power context
BMW M describes the F80/F82/F83 generation as using a turbocharged inline-six, the first turbocharged engine in this M3/M4 series history. Its retrospective gives a range of 317 kW (431 hp) to 368 kW (500 hp) across the generation’s range. Those endpoints cover different models or configurations; the 500 hp figure should not be assigned to every F82 Coupe, trim or market. BMW M’s retrospective attributes the generation details to BMW M GmbH in 2020.

These are selected official timeline entries, not a complete list of every F82 package, market-specific trim or model-year change. BMW’s M heritage timeline is the source for the two dated special-edition entries.
G82: the second M4 Coupe chassis generation
G82 is the next M4 Coupe chassis generation after F82. BMW’s heritage timeline includes an M4 CSL (G82) entry for 2022 and an M4 (G82) entry for 2024. Because BMW labels that timeline as under construction and says it does not show all models, these years are documented milestones—not a full G82 launch date or year-by-year catalog.

For a specific G82, confirm the model year, country, variant and equipment using the vehicle’s market-specific documentation. A chassis code identifies the generation; it does not, by itself, tell you the precise model year, power, drivetrain or transmission.

How to identify the right generation and model year
- Start with the chassis code. F82 identifies the first M4 Coupe generation; G82 identifies the second.
- Check the country and model year. Model-year calendars and available variants can differ by market, and the generation date alone does not establish a particular car’s specification.
- Identify the exact variant. Base, Competition and special-edition models can have different power, drivetrain and transmission details.
- Verify the car’s original documentation. Use the vehicle’s market-specific specifications or records rather than applying a current US-page figure to an older car.
What BMW’s published timeline does—and does not—show
BMW’s official sources support the two-generation outline, the F80/F82/F83 period of 2014–2020, the F82 GTS and CS timeline entries, selected G82 milestones, and the 2027 US lineup specifications. They do not establish a complete model-year-by-model-year trim catalog or a generation-level M4 production and sales total. A precise year-by-year answer therefore requires a market and variant scope beyond the dates in BMW’s heritage timeline.
