BMW’s Heart of Joy is a central control unit for Neue Klasse electric vehicles, not a driver-facing feature or a stand-alone ECU for consumers. It brings together control of the drivetrain, brakes, energy recuperation and steering subfunctions, alongside BMW’s in-house Dynamic Performance Control software. BMW says this integration makes the system faster and helps deliver smoother, more stable driving; its published performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results.
What is BMW’s Heart of Joy?
Heart of Joy is one of the central computers BMW is developing for its Neue Klasse vehicles. The name refers to the vehicle’s control hardware, working with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software—not a single driving mode or a separate product owners can buy. BMW describes the unit as coordinating the drivetrain, braking, energy recuperation and steering-related functions.
BMW presents the hardware and software as a matched system: the company says it developed Dynamic Performance Control in-house to work with Heart of Joy. Its stated aim is to let those vehicle functions respond in coordination rather than operate through separate control systems.
How does the control unit work?
In BMW’s description, earlier systems handled drive and braking functions with separate control units and algorithms. Heart of Joy combines those controls in one unit and coordinates signals across acceleration, braking and steering. BMW says faster processing and more direct signal transmission reduce response delays to milliseconds, allowing the systems to work together more closely.

The practical idea is that the car can manage propulsion and deceleration as related parts of one driving response. For example, when slowing down, the system can coordinate regenerative braking—which recovers energy through the electric drive—with the conventional brakes. BMW also associates the integration with more settled cornering and smoother transitions between stopping, starting and parking.
What does BMW claim Heart of Joy improves?
BMW has attached three headline figures to the system. They describe BMW’s claims, not independently verified results: the cited company material does not provide detailed test protocols or benchmark conditions for them.

BMW says the integrated control can also make cornering smoother, reduce the need for driver corrections and help the vehicle hold a more accurate, stable line. Those are BMW’s descriptions of the system’s intended and observed behavior; the cited material does not provide independent vehicle testing to establish how the effects compare across models or driving conditions. BMW Development board member Frank Weber summed up the company’s pitch as: “This is Efficient Dynamics squared.”
Which BMWs will get Heart of Joy?
BMW says Heart of Joy is intended for every fully electric Neue Klasse vehicle. The company identifies the iX3 as the first series-production Neue Klasse model and says the i3 is to follow in 2026. BMW’s U.S. technology page likewise describes Heart of Joy as a BMW-developed high-performance unit paired with BMW Dynamic Performance Control. Both accounts are manufacturer descriptions, rather than independent assessments.
Is Heart of Joy the same as BMW M’s future electric architecture?
No such relationship is established in the cited material. BMW has separately described a future high-performance BMW M electric architecture involving four motors and individual-wheel control. That should not be treated as another name for Heart of Joy or assumed to share its architecture without an explicit link from BMW. The company’s BMW M electric performance announcement covers that separate subject.

What is not yet established?
BMW’s published accounts explain the system’s intended role and provide company performance claims, but they do not establish independent verification of the speed, braking or efficiency figures, disclose detailed test methods for those numbers, or report long-term reliability results. Heart of Joy is best understood as an integrated vehicle-control architecture whose real-world effects will depend on its implementation in production cars.
