Yes—the BMW M3 Touring GT3 wagon is real. Officially called the BMW M3 Touring 24H, it is a one-off competition car built around the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and announced for the 16–17 May 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours. It is not a road-going M3 Touring with a racing kit, and BMW has not announced a production version.
From April Fool’s rendering to a real race car
BMW Motorsport began with digital renderings posted as an April Fool’s idea on 1 April 2025. BMW says those posts reached more than one million users and generated over 1.6 million views. The response turned the fictional wagon into an eight-month engineering project, culminating in a completed car and a Nürburgring programme.

BMW says construction of the actual car took eight weeks inside that overall eight-month schedule. The project story and test details are documented by BMW M Motorsport, while the race announcement is in BMW’s Nürburgring release.

What the M3 Touring 24H shares with the M4 GT3 EVO
The wagon uses the BMW M4 GT3 EVO as its engineering reference. BMW says the two cars share the M4 GT3 EVO’s technical data, but the M3 Touring 24H required a different body and a redesigned aerodynamic package to suit the Touring silhouette.

The 200 mm and 32 mm figures describe the race-car comparison with the M4 GT3 EVO, not a comparison with the showroom M3 Competition Touring.
Why it is not the production BMW M3 Touring
The road car and the M3 Touring 24H share a name and a broad wagon idea, but they serve completely different purposes. BMW’s current model page lists the production M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive as a practical road model with a 3.0-litre inline-six, 390 kW (530 hp), 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, an eight-speed M Steptronic Sport transmission with Drivelogic and M xDrive. Those figures apply to the current road-car specification, not the race car.

For historical context, BMW’s original 2022 launch release listed 375 kW (510 hp) for the first production specification. The current specification is shown on BMW’s current M3 Touring model page; the launch figure appears in the 2022 press release.

This is more than a roofline change. BMW had to adapt a GT3-derived competition package to a longer, taller estate-shaped body while preserving the durability expected of a 24-hour race car. BMW M Motorsport Sales Manager Roy Szakacsi explained the standard the team set: To build a car that looks like a race car, but falls apart after three kilometres, wasn’t an option.

The project was driven partly by the audience reaction to the original concept. BMW M Motorsport communications manager Benjamin Lutz said, The feedback was overwhelming.
Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, went further: To be honest, I think the fans were the ones who made it possible for us to actually implement the car. Because if they hadn’t reacted so positively, the car would never have existed.

What BMW has not confirmed
- A production M3 Touring GT3 road car or a customer version of the 24H racer.
- The race car’s engine output, weight, gearbox specification, lap time or fuel consumption.
- Its final Nürburgring result or finishing position.
- A full homologation document or detailed GT3 class breakdown.
- Retail availability of the complete car, race parts or an official scale model.
Those omissions matter because the M3 Touring 24H is a unique competition prototype, not a conventional model added to BMW’s catalogue.
