The 2027 BMW i3 is BMW’s first fully electric 3 Series on the company’s Neue Klasse architecture. It combines a long-wheelbase, short-overhang sedan body with an 800-volt electrical system, sixth-generation BMW eDrive, a new display and operating concept, and the Heart of Joy control system. BMW says production cars reach the first launch markets in autumn 2026, with the U.S. launch planned for the first quarter of 2027.
What is the 2027 BMW i3?
The new i3 is not a continuation of the earlier compact BMW i3. It is an electric 3 Series sedan and the second production model based on BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture. BMW describes the body as a 2.5-box sedan with a long wheelbase and short overhangs, proportions intended to preserve the 3 Series’ sporting stance while creating space for the electric hardware.
Neue Klasse technology
Every Neue Klasse model uses sixth-generation BMW eDrive and an 800V electrical system. The i3 also introduces BMW’s new display and operating concept and the Heart of Joy control system, which coordinates the car’s drive and dynamic functions through the Neue Klasse electronics platform.
Range and charging figures
BMW has announced two electric versions for the initial 3 Series range. The European figures below use the WLTP test cycle; they should not be treated as U.S. EPA ratings.

The quoted 10-minute gains are maximum-rate claims, not a promise that every charging stop will deliver those numbers. Battery temperature, state of charge, charger capability and the vehicle’s charging curve all affect the result. An 800V system allows the i3 to use very high-power DC equipment when the charger and conditions support it.
What range will the U.S. BMW i3 have?
BMW USA lists a preliminary EPA-procedure estimate of 446–468 miles for the i3 xDrive50. BMW has not published final EPA certification results, so that range should be treated as provisional until the official rating is released.

U.S. charging hardware
The U.S.-market car uses a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port. BMW’s preliminary U.S. figures specify up to 400 kW of DC charging and a 10-minute gain of 191–208 miles under maximum-rate conditions. Those are BMW estimates rather than independent test results.
When does the 2027 BMW i3 go on sale?
First launch markets
BMW says deliveries begin in autumn 2026 in the first launch markets. Series production started in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Munich after a four-year transformation of the factory.

United States
BMW USA says the i3 50 xDrive is scheduled to launch in the United States during the first quarter of 2027. The company has also said that an i3 M60 xDrive is scheduled to premiere in 2027, but it has not provided the final U.S. specifications or timing for that model in the announcements covered here.
How the new i3 differs from the original BMW i3
The shared name is the main connection. The original i3 was a separate compact BMW electric model, while the 2027 car is a 3 Series sedan built on the Neue Klasse platform. The new car is therefore aimed at buyers who want the size, seating position and road presence of BMW’s core sport sedan, rather than the earlier i3’s distinct compact format.

Its engineering priorities are also different. The 2027 i3 is designed around an 800V system, sixth-generation eDrive, long-distance range and high-rate DC charging. BMW’s earlier i3 nameplate does not establish the specifications or driving characteristics of this new sedan.

Plant Munich is the home of the 3 Series and now builds the electric i3 alongside BMW’s Neue Klasse manufacturing strategy. BMW says the plant will produce only fully electric vehicles from 2027 and that bringing i3 production online reduces manufacturing costs there by a further 10 percent. That manufacturing figure is a BMW Group statement about plant costs, not a forecast of the car’s retail price.

What BMW has not announced yet
- U.S. EPA-certified range and efficiency figures.
- Launch MSRP for either the i3 50 xDrive or i3 40 xDrive.
- Final U.S. availability and specifications for the i3 40 xDrive.
- Complete performance, equipment and pricing details for the planned i3 M60 xDrive.
- Independent road-test results, including real-world range, acceleration and charging-curve measurements.
BMW has not published launch pricing in the official announcements covered here, so any current price claim would be speculation.
How to compare the i3 with other electric sport sedans
The most useful comparison should wait for certified figures and production-car testing. Check these points separately rather than relying on a single headline range number:
- Certified range: compare EPA ratings with EPA ratings in the United States, or WLTP with WLTP in Europe.
- Charging curve: maximum kilowatts matter less than how long the car can sustain high power and how much range it adds during a typical stop.
- Driver assistance: compare the systems and included functions, not just the marketing name.
- Rear-seat practicality: check legroom, headroom, entry space and trunk capacity in the actual trim.
- Warranty: review the vehicle, battery and roadside-coverage terms for the buyer’s country.
- Total ownership cost: include home-charging installation, electricity rates, insurance, maintenance and any local incentives.
Bottom line
The 2027 BMW i3 makes the 3 Series an electric-first sedan on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform. Its headline proposition is a choice of very long WLTP range, 800V charging and a new electronic operating architecture, with U.S. production-car availability expected in early 2027. Final EPA ratings, pricing and independent testing will determine how compelling it is against other electric sport sedans.
