The BMW iX4 has been announced as a fully electric SUV coupé in BMW’s Neue Klasse family, but an announcement does not mean every market has retail cars, confirmed trims or local prices. If you are comparing options now, start with the Audi Q6 e-tron, Porsche Macan Electric, Polestar 3 and BMW iX; then check which are actually available where you live. They offer different body styles, price points and performance priorities, and the published figures below do not support a universal winner.
What the iX4 announcement means for your shortlist
BMW describes the iX4 as the third model in its Neue Klasse family. The global announcement includes an iX4 40 xDrive and a higher-output configuration, but it does not establish that every market will receive both versions at the same time—or when a specific dealer will have one to sell. Check BMW’s global iX4 announcement alongside the local BMW site and a dealer’s inventory before treating it as an orderable alternative.

The listed prices are not a like-for-like total-cost comparison: they come from different manufacturers and source contexts, and do not establish local taxes, destination charges, incentives, options or dealer pricing. Treat the cited Porsche and Polestar figures as US-market reference points, not quotes for another country.
Which alternatives deserve a closer look?
BMW iX: stay with BMW and compare a conventional SUV shape
The iX is the most direct starting point if you want to remain within BMW’s electric lineup but are not committed to the iX4’s coupé roofline. Its conventional SUV profile makes it a useful shape comparison, not proof of greater usable space. The available evidence does not establish a current, matched iX-versus-iX4 comparison for price, range, dimensions or cargo, so do not infer those differences from the names or silhouettes.

Compare the same items for each candidate: exterior footprint, rear passenger space, cargo volume, range rating, drivetrain, charging capability and the price of the equipment you would actually select. If you are buying outside the US, use your market’s BMW specification rather than carrying over US-market figures.

Audi Q6 e-tron: compare rear-drive and quattro configurations
The Q6 e-tron is the alternative in this shortlist with sourced technical sheets for both a performance rear-drive configuration and a quattro configuration. That lets you frame a useful question—whether you want the cited rear-drive setup or all-wheel drive—without assuming that one is automatically preferable. The published range figures are European combined WLTP values, not EPA ratings.
For the cited performance rear-drive version, Audi lists 556–661 km (345.5–410.7 miles) combined WLTP range, a 94.9 kWh net battery and maximum charging figures of 11 kW AC and 270 kW DC. Its sheet gives 21 minutes for a DC charge from 10% to 80%. The cited quattro sheet lists all-wheel drive, 534–623 km combined WLTP range, the same 94.9 kWh net battery and DC charging up to 270 kW. Those ranges are configuration-specific bands, not a guarantee for every Q6 or a prediction of what you will achieve on a trip.
When comparing the two sheets, confirm that a local car has the same drivetrain and specification. The supplied quattro sheet does not state a 10–80% time, so do not transfer the rear-drive version’s 21-minute figure to it. Also ask for the local test-cycle rating and the charging details for the exact trim. Audi’s stated peak charging power and charge time describe specified conditions; neither guarantees that every public charger, battery temperature or charging session will reproduce the published result.

Porsche Macan Electric: a sport-focused premium option
The Macan Electric belongs on the list if a sport-focused premium SUV is a priority. Porsche positions the electric Macan as a sports car in its segment; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent handling assessment. A test drive is the appropriate way to judge seating position, ride, visibility and steering feel for yourself.

Porsche’s 2026 US technical data lists MSRP from $80,300 to $112,700 across the listed trims, with EPA range from 288 to 315 miles for the trims that show range values. The same document gives 21 minutes for a 10–80% charge at a specified 270 kW condition. Match the range number to the exact trim you are considering; the 288–315-mile span is not one rating that applies to every Macan Electric. Check the current Porsche configurator and dealer quote for the version you can actually buy, because the published MSRP is not a current local out-the-door price.
Polestar 3: a US-market reference with a distinct price and range point
The Polestar 3 is another premium electric SUV to compare if its US-market figures suit your search. Its US page lists a starting MSRP of $67,500, up to 350 miles of EPA-estimated range and 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds in the displayed model context. “Starting” and “up to” matter: neither number establishes the price or EPA range for every configuration.
Use those figures to decide whether it merits a test drive, not to declare it cheaper or longer-range than every iX4 configuration. BMW’s cited iX4 information does not provide a matching US EPA range or local price, and Polestar’s starting MSRP does not show what a similarly equipped vehicle costs. Confirm the current configuration, local inventory, range for that vehicle and any applicable price adjustments on the Polestar 3 US page.

Range is useful only when the number is attached to its market, test cycle and configuration. In this shortlist, the Audi figures are combined WLTP values from European specification sheets. The Porsche and Polestar numbers are explicitly EPA-labeled US figures. The supplied BMW iX4 announcement and USA model page do not establish a comparable range figure.

Do not convert a WLTP number into an assumed EPA result, or compare its numeric value directly with an EPA estimate as if both came from the same test. Nor should you treat a range band as one fixed number: the Audi sheets give configuration ranges, while Porsche’s cited 288–315-mile span covers listed trims. Before comparing two specific cars, write down the exact trim and drivetrain for each, then obtain each vehicle’s official rating in the market where you will register it.
- Use the same market. A US EPA value and a European WLTP value answer different market-specific questions.
- Match the configuration. Record the trim, drivetrain and any relevant wheel or equipment selection shown with the rating.
- Keep the unit and cycle attached. Do not strip “EPA-estimated” or “combined WLTP” from a number when you copy it into your comparison.
- Consider your own route. Published ratings are a standardized reference; your trip planning should also account for charging access and conditions you encounter. The cited sources do not establish real-world range tests for these vehicles.
Compare charging capability with the car you can actually order
Charging specifications answer different questions. AC charging is relevant to charging from an appropriate home or destination setup; maximum DC power and a 10–80% time describe a fast-charging context. The Audi performance rear-drive sheet supplies both AC and DC maximum figures, while the cited quattro sheet supplies a DC maximum but not an AC figure or a 10–80% time. Porsche’s stated 21-minute time is tied to a specified 270 kW condition. These values should not be treated as directly interchangeable across vehicles.
A peak DC number is not a promise that the car will sustain that power throughout a charge or that a station will provide it. The available figures do not establish comparable charging curves, nor do they show the result at every battery temperature or charger. If regular road trips matter, ask for the charging curve or a clearly defined 10–80% specification for the exact trim, and check that the charging locations you expect to use support the vehicle and connector in your region.

A charger’s advertised capacity cannot make a car accept more power than its own charging limit. The cited specifications do not verify a particular home charger’s compatibility with the iX4 or every alternative, so confirm the vehicle and regional requirements before purchasing equipment.

Make the body-style decision with measurements, not labels
The iX4 is explicitly an SUV coupé, while the iX is described as a conventional SUV alternative. That distinction is a reason to inspect seating and luggage space, not a substitute for measurements. Exterior length, width and height do not tell you how comfortably an adult fits in the rear seat or how much luggage fits behind it.
For each candidate, look for official rear headroom and legroom figures, cargo volume measured under the same seat configuration, and the dimensions that matter for your garage or parking space. If those figures are not available on the local manufacturer page, measure in person: sit behind your normal driving position, bring a child seat or bulky item if relevant, and test the cargo area with the kind of bags you actually carry. Do not conclude that a lower roofline has a particular headroom or cargo penalty without measured evidence.
A practical order for narrowing the shortlist
- Confirm local availability first. Ask a local retailer whether the iX4 is orderable, which versions are allocated and what delivery timing is currently quoted. Do the same for each alternative; an announcement or national model page does not guarantee local stock.
- Set the body and passenger-space requirement. Decide whether the coupé profile is a must-have or whether a conventional SUV shape is acceptable. Check rear-seat fit and cargo volume directly rather than relying on exterior dimensions.
- Compare matching market specifications. For each specific trim, record its local official range rating and test cycle, drivetrain, charging details and dimensions. Do not use the Audi WLTP values as if they were EPA figures or transfer one trim’s charging time to another.
- Compare real prices for the same buying scenario. Get a current local quote for the trim and equipment you want. Separate MSRP from options, taxes, delivery charges and any incentive you have verified; the cited US list prices alone cannot establish an equivalent cost in another market.
- Check charging fit. Confirm connector and charging access where you live, the vehicle’s AC limit for home use, and the fast-charging information for the configuration under consideration. For home installation, verify electrical capacity and local rules with a qualified installer.
- Drive the finalists. Compare visibility, seat comfort, ride and the controls you will use every day. The cited manufacturer specifications do not establish which one will feel best to you.
On the evidence available, the Q6 e-tron, Macan Electric and Polestar 3 have useful published comparison figures, while the iX is a sensible same-brand shape alternative. The right choice depends on your market, actual trim availability, space needs, budget and charging pattern—not on treating unlike range figures or body styles as interchangeable.
