To get more distance from a BMW electric SUV, reduce avoidable energy use: accelerate smoothly, keep a moderate speed, precondition the cabin while plugged in, maintain the vehicle’s specified tire pressure, and remove unused roof or bike carriers. On supported models, Efficient mode and Max Range can help prioritize efficiency, but their controls and effects vary by vehicle and software.
These steps can improve efficiency; they cannot guarantee a particular trip range. BMW says actual range depends on factors including configuration, tires and wheels, driving style, traffic, temperature, accessories and charging conditions.

Start with the factors that affect your trip
Range is the distance a vehicle can travel before it needs to recharge. The distance shown by an estimate is not a promise that every journey will match it: conditions change how much energy the SUV uses. BMW identifies vehicle configuration, tires and wheels, driving style, traffic, temperature, accessories and charging conditions as relevant factors.

Your route, speed, comfort needs and vehicle equipment all matter. A technique that helps in stop-and-go traffic may have little relevance on a steady highway drive, while cold weather can increase energy demand before you even leave.

The advice below applies broadly to BMW electric SUVs, with specific instructions called out where BMW’s published guidance is tied to a system or model. Do not assume that a menu, setting or estimate applies to every model year or configuration.
Change how you drive before changing anything else
Accelerate gently and anticipate stops
Hard acceleration and sporty driving use more energy than gradual acceleration. Ease into the accelerator rather than treating every green light as a launch. When traffic allows, look farther ahead so you can lift off early and slow smoothly instead of accelerating toward a queue and braking at the last moment.
Regenerative braking can recover some energy as the vehicle slows, but it does not make unnecessary acceleration free. The more efficient pattern is to avoid creating speed that you will immediately have to shed. Use the regeneration settings available in your vehicle in a way that suits the road, traffic and your driving comfort; there is no single setting that is right for every BMW electric SUV or every condition.

Higher speeds increase energy use, so reducing speed when it is safe and practical can help extend range. Use a steady, moderate pace rather than frequent bursts of acceleration. Allow enough following distance to respond smoothly to traffic, and do not make abrupt speed changes just to chase a range estimate.
Traffic, speed limits, road conditions and safe handling take priority over efficiency. Do not drive below a safe or legal speed to pursue a theoretical range gain. If your journey includes a long high-speed section, plan around the additional energy demand rather than assuming a slower-speed efficiency figure will apply.
Consider hills and route shape
Climbing steep terrain requires more energy than traveling a flatter route. If two routes are otherwise suitable, compare their distance, elevation, traffic and likely speed rather than choosing solely by the shortest mileage. A longer route is not automatically more efficient, and the available guidance does not establish a universal amount of energy saved by avoiding a climb.
On a hilly route, smooth inputs remain useful: avoid accelerating hard uphill when unnecessary, and anticipate traffic and descents. The vehicle’s recuperation behavior depends on its settings and conditions, so do not count on a downhill section to erase the energy used climbing.

Use the efficiency controls your vehicle actually has
Efficient mode and recuperation
BMW’s drive modes can adjust how the vehicle prioritizes driving characteristics. Where available, Efficient mode is the efficiency-oriented choice. The effect and exact controls depend on the model and software, so check the vehicle’s own menu and owner information rather than relying on a menu path from a different BMW.
BMW’s instructions for vehicles running BMW Operating System 8.5 describe using Efficient Mode with Mode B for one-pedal driving, particularly in stop-and-go or residential driving. Mode B is specific to the documented system; do not assume that another model has the same label or behavior. Regenerative braking can suit traffic with frequent slowing, while a different recuperation choice may feel more natural on another road. Choose a predictable setting and keep control of the vehicle throughout.
Max Range: when to use it and how to switch it on
Max Range is a temporary range-prioritizing setting on supported BMW electric vehicles. BMW says it can limit top speed, reduce energy-demanding features such as climate control, and adjust performance. It is intended for situations where conserving energy matters more than preserving every comfort or performance feature, not as a substitute for charging and trip planning.
- Press My Modes.
- Select Efficient.
- Choose Activate maximum range.
- Confirm the selection when prompted.
Those are BMW’s documented menu steps; labels and availability may differ by vehicle, model year or software. If you do not see the option, consult the vehicle’s menu or owner information rather than assuming the feature is available or trying to force a setting that is not supported.

BMW USA estimates that Max Range can add “about 15% and up to 25%” range. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed increase for an individual trip. BMW says the actual result varies with factors such as the vehicle, tires, driving style, traffic and outside temperature. The feature’s limits on speed, climate and performance may also make it unsuitable when you need those capabilities or comfort. Use it only when the trade-off is acceptable and driving conditions remain safe.
Precondition before departure, especially in cold weather
Warm or cool the cabin while connected
Heating or cooling the cabin takes energy. If you use the applicable vehicle or app control to prepare the cabin while the SUV is connected to charging, less of that initial cabin-conditioning demand may need to come from the battery once you set off. Schedule a departure or use the available preconditioning control if your particular vehicle supports it.
Exact controls and availability vary. BMW’s guidance is to precondition while connected where possible; it does not establish one universal app path or a fixed amount of range saved. Check the controls for your vehicle and allow the cabin to reach a comfortable temperature before departure.

Cold weather can affect both battery and cabin demand
BMW explains that low temperatures can reduce electric-vehicle range. In cold conditions, battery heating adds energy demand, and the cabin also needs heating. BMW recommends preconditioning the battery while connected to a Flexible Fast Charger, Wallbox or charging station where available. The specific capability depends on the vehicle and its controls.
If you are unplugged, climate use draws energy from the battery. BMW notes that window and seat heating, or pre-heating before departure, can use less battery than heating the cabin after setting off. Treat that as a way to manage comfort-related demand, not a reason to compromise visibility: use the defrosting needed to keep windows clear and drive safely.
In warm weather, cabin cooling also consumes energy. Preparing the cabin while connected can reduce the amount of cooling needed from the battery after departure. Do not leave the vehicle uncomfortable or use a climate setting that interferes with safe driving to pursue extra range.
Check tires and remove unnecessary drag
Use the pressure specified for your vehicle
Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which can raise energy use. Check tire pressure against the specification for your particular vehicle, using the pressure information on the vehicle’s door-jamb label or in its owner’s manual. BMW’s recommendation is to maintain the vehicle’s recommended pressure; there is no single correct pressure for every BMW electric SUV, wheel or tire combination.
A digital tire-pressure gauge can help you check pressure, but it is not a substitute for the vehicle’s specification. Do not inflate tires to the maximum pressure printed on a tire sidewall unless that is also the vehicle’s stated pressure. Tire and wheel selection can affect range as well, so take the fitted configuration into account when assessing an estimate.
Remove accessories you do not need
Roof racks, bike carriers and other accessories that increase aerodynamic drag can use more energy, particularly when driving at speed. Remove them when they are not needed. If you need to carry equipment, factor the accessory into your trip planning instead of assuming the vehicle’s published range applies unchanged.
Make choices based on the trip, not a single range number
The table summarizes the main choices as trade-offs. BMW’s guidance identifies the direction of the effects but does not provide a controlled test that isolates a specific range gain for each one. Treat the relative effects as practical guidance, not as a prediction of miles or percentage saved.

| Choice | Likely effect on energy use | Trade-off or limit | When it is most relevant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth acceleration and anticipatory slowing | Can reduce avoidable energy use compared with hard acceleration and unnecessary braking. | Requires attention to traffic and room to respond; it does not justify unsafe driving. | Stop-and-go traffic, frequent intersections and changing traffic conditions. |
| Moderate, steady speed | Higher speeds consume more energy; a moderate pace can help conserve it. | Follow speed limits, road conditions and safe traffic flow. | Long drives and highway sections. |
| Efficient mode and suitable recuperation | Can support efficiency on compatible vehicles. | Availability, labels and operation vary by model and software; no single setting suits all roads. | When the vehicle offers the control and its behavior fits the route. |
| Max Range | BMW estimates about 15% and up to 25% additional range; actual results vary. | May limit speed, climate features and performance; supported vehicles only. | When range takes priority and the setting’s restrictions are acceptable. |
| Preconditioning while connected | Can reduce cabin-conditioning energy taken from the battery after departure; battery preconditioning may also matter in cold conditions. | Controls and battery-preconditioning availability vary by vehicle. | Before departure, especially in cold weather or when cabin heating or cooling will be needed. |
| Correct tire pressure and suitable tire/wheel configuration | Correct pressure avoids the extra rolling resistance associated with underinflation; tire and wheel choice can affect range. | Use the pressure specified for the exact vehicle, not a generic figure. | Routine checks and when considering a tire or wheel change. |
| Removing unused roof or bike carriers | Can reduce aerodynamic drag from unnecessary accessories. | Carry required equipment when needed and account for its effect. | Whenever a carrier or other drag-increasing accessory is not in use. |
These are choices to weigh together, not competing magic fixes. Efficient mode, moderate speed and a smooth driving style can complement one another. Climate settings involve a comfort trade-off, so preconditioning while connected is useful when you want a comfortable cabin without relying as much on battery energy after departure. Max Range combines several restrictions and is best treated as an occasional tool when the added margin matters more than its performance and climate compromises.
Vehicle setup also matters when comparing options. A tire or wheel change is not simply an efficiency adjustment: choose equipment compatible with the vehicle and consider that BMW identifies tire and wheel configuration as a range factor. Similarly, taking off a carrier is easy when you do not need it, while keeping one installed for convenience may make sense if you regularly transport equipment. The relevant question is whether the convenience is worth the added aerodynamic drag for the trips you make.

Interpret BMW range estimates carefully
Use the estimate for the exact model year, trim, wheel and tire configuration, and geography. BMW’s 2026 iX material gives different estimates by variant and configuration and cautions that figures for recently released models may be preliminary. BMW says those figures are based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedures. A published estimate is not an assurance that your individual route, temperature, traffic or driving style will produce the same distance.
Do not compare a figure for one iX configuration with another as though only driving behavior changed: wheel and tire choice and vehicle configuration are among the factors BMW identifies as affecting range. For a real trip, consider the route and conditions you expect, and use the vehicle’s own trip and charging information to plan. The available guidance does not provide independent, controlled savings percentages for smooth driving, tire pressure or preconditioning, so no fixed gain should be assigned to those individual steps.
When comparing published estimates, confirm that you are looking at the same model year, variant, wheel setup and market. A preliminary estimate for a recently released model may be updated as certification information becomes available. Rather than treating a headline figure as a guaranteed arrival distance, consider it a standardized reference point; the trip itself will reflect the weather, route, traffic, load and choices you actually encounter.
A practical range-focused routine
- Before choosing a route: consider distance, hills, traffic and the speeds you will likely need. Plan charging based on the vehicle’s trip information and your expected conditions.
- Before departure: connect the vehicle if practical and use its supported cabin or battery preconditioning controls. Confirm the cabin is comfortable and the windows are clear.
- Check the setup: confirm tire pressures against the vehicle’s specified values and remove unneeded roof or bike carriers.
- Choose appropriate settings: use Efficient mode or a suitable recuperation setting if your vehicle offers them. Consider Max Range only if your vehicle supports it and its restrictions suit the journey.
- On the road: accelerate gently, anticipate traffic, maintain a moderate safe speed and adjust expectations for hills, temperature, wind, traffic and accessories.
When conditions or the trip change, prioritize safe driving and reliable charging over trying to preserve an estimate. Range management is about making informed trade-offs with the vehicle you have, the route you are driving and the comfort and performance you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I get the most out of my range in a BMW electric vehicle?
Focus on avoidable energy use: accelerate smoothly, anticipate stops, maintain a moderate safe speed, precondition the cabin while connected when possible, keep tires at the vehicle’s specified pressure and remove unused roof or bike carriers. Use Efficient mode or Max Range only if your vehicle supports those settings and their trade-offs suit the trip. Conditions still matter, so none of these steps guarantees a particular range.

How do I turn on Max Range Mode in a BMW electric SUV?
On vehicles with the documented control, press My Modes, select Efficient, choose Activate maximum range and confirm. Menu names and availability vary by model year and software. If the option is not shown, check the vehicle’s own menu or owner information. BMW estimates about 15% and up to 25% additional range, but the result varies and the mode may limit speed, climate features and performance.
Why is the range of my BMW electric vehicle reduced at low temperatures?
Cold weather increases energy demand. BMW explains that battery heating requires energy, and heating the cabin uses energy too. Preconditioning the battery and cabin while connected where the vehicle supports it can reduce some demand after departure. Cabin heating and safe window defrosting remain important; do not compromise comfort or visibility to pursue range.
Does preconditioning a BMW electric SUV save range?
Preparing the cabin while the vehicle is connected can reduce the amount of cabin-heating or cooling energy drawn from the battery once you start driving. In cold conditions, battery preconditioning may also help manage battery-heating demand where supported. BMW does not give a fixed range gain for preconditioning, and controls differ by vehicle.
Does Max Range guarantee up to 25% more distance?
No. The figure is BMW’s estimate, described as about 15% and up to 25%; it is not a promise for an individual journey. Actual results vary with the vehicle, tires, driving style, traffic and outside temperature, among other conditions.
What tire pressure should I use to improve range?
Use the pressure specified for your particular BMW, found on the vehicle’s door-jamb label or in its owner’s manual. Underinflation increases rolling resistance, but there is no one correct pressure for every model or tire combination. Do not substitute the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall for the vehicle specification.
The Bottom Line
For more range from a BMW electric SUV, combine smooth driving and a moderate safe speed with connected preconditioning, correct vehicle-specified tire pressure and less unnecessary aerodynamic drag. Efficient mode and Max Range can help on supported vehicles, but settings vary and BMW’s Max Range estimate is not guaranteed. Plan for your exact vehicle, route and weather, and never trade away safe driving or clear visibility for an estimated range gain.
