What BMW is reportedly planning
The two vehicles have different levels of certainty. Autocar’s 30 September 2026 report on BMW’s Capital Market Day describes an announced compact Neue Klasse EV for the high-volume entry segment, intended to become the next 1 Series. The same report says BMW is evaluating an additional large SUV above the current X7, with US-market needs in view.

Is BMW making an X8?
That name is not confirmed. The report supports saying BMW is considering an SUV above the X7; it does not establish production approval, final dimensions, a price, technical specifications or a launch date. “Above” describes its intended place in the lineup, not verified exterior size. Calling it an X8 would turn speculation into a model announcement.
Is the electric 1 Series confirmed, and when could it arrive?

What is reported about its platform and powertrain
The report says the compact EV will use the Neue Klasse platform also used by the iX3 and i3, and expects base electric versions to be rear-wheel drive. It also expects a combustion-powered 1 Series to continue alongside the EV. The two cars are described as related in styling but technically distinct. These details are reported expectations, not a final specification sheet.
How the plans compare with BMW’s current X7
BMW USA currently describes the 2027 X7 as its largest available model and lists xDrive40i and M60i versions.
