BMW i5 LWB vs MG Cyberster: Which Electric Car Fits Your Life in India?

BMW i5 LWB and MG Cyberster are not like-for-like alternatives. The i5 is a long-wheelbase, four-door electric sedan built around executive comfort and carrying passengers. Cyberster is a two-seat, all-wheel-drive electric convertible roadster built around acceleration and open-air driving. Choose the BMW for regular rear-seat use and long-distance passenger duty; choose the MG for a dramatic two-seat performance experience. Prices and battery-payment structures also differ, so compare the exact date, trim, city and ownership plan rather than the headline numbers alone.

BMW i5 LWB vs MG Cyberster at a glance

Factor BMW i5 LWB MG Cyberster
Vehicle type Long-wheelbase, four-door electric sedan Two-seat electric convertible roadster
India price reference BMW India starting price: ₹79,60,000 (date-sensitive) MG SELECT: ₹82,49,800 ex-showroom; separate BaaS offer at ₹72.49 lakh plus ₹8/km (September 2026 announcement)
Published range claim Up to 669 km; BMW says its figure follows the prescribed European procedure 580 km MIDC claim from JSW MG Motor India’s 2025 launch release
Battery information in cited specification 81.6 kWh for CarWale’s listed i5 LWB eDrive35L M Sport 77 kWh
Wheelbase 3,105 mm (CarWale listing) 2,691 mm (CarWale listing)
Power and torque Do not substitute figures from another i5 variant; the cited material does not establish a directly comparable output 510 PS and 725 Nm
0–100 km/h No directly comparable figure established for the cited LWB variant 3.2 seconds claimed by MG
Seats and roof Four-door sedan with a fixed roof Two seats with a soft-top convertible roof and electric scissor doors

The table combines official manufacturer information with clearly labelled secondary listings. BMW India and MG SELECT prices are the appropriate starting points for a current quotation, while CarWale dimensions and battery data identify the variants it lists. A dealer invoice, registration location and selected equipment can change the amount you actually pay.

The 414 mm wheelbase difference is not a minor specification detail. It signals why these cars feel intended for different jobs: the BMW allocates substantially more length to a passenger cabin, while the MG concentrates its shorter footprint around two occupants and the roadster hardware. It does not, by itself, prove ride quality, boot volume or turning-circle performance; those details must be checked on the exact cars.

What each car is designed to do

BMW i5 LWB: passenger-first electric luxury

The i5 LWB’s defining feature is its stretched body. CarWale lists a 3,105 mm wheelbase for the eDrive35L M Sport, giving the sedan a fundamentally different mission from a compact or standard-wheelbase performance car. The four-door layout makes it practical for a driver and regular rear passengers, airport runs, business travel and family use. The long-wheelbase format is the reason to consider this BMW, not simply its electric powertrain or range headline.

Rear-seat access, a conventional luggage area and weather protection matter when the car is used every day. Those advantages are structural: a roadster cannot provide a third or fourth passenger seat, regardless of how quick it is. A buyer should sit in the rear seat with the front seat set for the usual driver, check door opening in a tight parking space and test whether child seats or luggage fit the intended routine before paying a premium for the longer body.

MG Cyberster: an occasion car for two

Cyberster is a two-seat roadster with a soft-top roof, electric scissor doors and dual-motor all-wheel drive in MG’s July 25, 2025 launch specification. Its appeal is the experience of driving an open-top sports car with instant electric torque. The 510 PS, 725 Nm and claimed 3.2-second 0–100 km/h time describe a performance-oriented brief, not a chauffeur or family brief.

That body style brings unavoidable compromises. There is no rear bench for adults, and roof-down use depends on weather, storage needs and personal preference. If a second passenger is the only regular companion and the car will often be driven for enjoyment, those compromises may be acceptable; if not, they are decisive. Confirm the roof operating procedure, storage space with the roof folded and visibility with the top up during the handover, because a convertible’s daily convenience depends on those practical details as much as on its acceleration.

Price: the number depends on how you buy

Battery-included prices

BMW India lists the i5 LWB from ₹79,60,000. MG SELECT’s current product page lists Cyberster at ₹82,49,800 ex-showroom. These are not automatically equivalent quotations: each can refer to different equipment, taxes, city charges, registration and availability. Ask for a written, date-stamped quotation naming the exact variant before deciding which is cheaper.

Ex-showroom is only the first line on an Indian purchase worksheet. Registration, insurance, handling or logistics charges, optional accessories, finance costs and any local tax treatment can alter the on-road total. Request the same list of line items for both cars and check whether a quoted price is for an immediately available vehicle or a future allocation. A lower advertised figure is not evidence of a lower delivered cost until those items are normalized.

MG’s battery-as-a-service option

On September 17, 2026, JSW MG Motor India announced a Cyberster BaaS structure priced at ₹72.49 lakh plus ₹8.00 per kilometre for battery rental. The ₹72.49 lakh figure is therefore not a battery-included ownership price. It is an entry price paired with a usage-linked payment.

  • Protection Function: Our car cup holder coaster has a carry handle design and a stand-up ring edge on its edge to effectively prevent food crumbs, drinks and water from leaking out and preventing the car cup holder from getting dirty.Meanwhile,Thickened design effectively prevents the cup holder from being scratched by the cup when driving on bumpy roads and eliminates the annoying thumping sound, making your journey more enjoyable.
  • Easy to Use and Clean: With embedded installation, you just need to put it flat on the car cupholder. It is also very quick to remove, there is a small bump on the coaster, pinch it and you can easily remove the coaster. It is very easy to clean, rinse with water or wipe with a wet towel (be careful not to clean with sharp tools).
  • 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.

For illustration, 10,000 billed kilometres would add ₹80,000 in battery rental at that rate; 20,000 km would add ₹1,60,000, and 30,000 km would add ₹2,40,000. These are arithmetic examples, not a prediction of your contract total. Confirm how kilometres are recorded, whether there is a minimum, what happens at resale, and which taxes or fees are outside the quoted amount. Compare the contract’s full term with a conventional battery-included purchase rather than comparing only the lower entry figure.

Ask whether the rental is invoiced monthly, how odometer discrepancies are handled, whether a kilometre allowance can be changed and what happens if the vehicle is off the road. The published ₹8/km rate is useful for a first estimate, but the signed BaaS agreement controls the actual liability. If you drive very little, the lower upfront figure may not automatically produce the lowest total cost; if you drive extensively, the usage charge deserves particular scrutiny.

Why older MG launch prices should not be reused

MG’s 2025 launch release used introductory and fresh-booking prices that differ from the current MG SELECT figure and the 2026 BaaS announcement. Treat those launch numbers as historical context only. A price shown in an old article may be accurate for its booking window but still be wrong for a purchase today.

Secondary on-road figures

CarWale lists ₹84.66 lakh for the selected i5 LWB and ₹87.98 lakh for the selected Cyberster on-road in Gandhidham. ZigWheels’ comparison, last updated September 8, 2026, lists ₹79.60 lakh and ₹82.50 lakh ex-showroom respectively. The differences reflect source date, selected trim and price basis. Use these figures as comparison context, not as a substitute for a current local quote.

Range: 669 km and 580 km are different test-cycle claims

BMW’s stated procedure

BMW India claims up to 669 km for the i5 LWB and says its official range and consumption figures were determined under the prescribed measuring procedure required by the applicable European regulation. The wording identifies a regulated test result, not a guaranteed distance in every Indian journey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MG’s MIDC figure

JSW MG Motor India’s July 2025 release gives Cyberster a 580 km MIDC claimed range. MIDC is the test-cycle label attached to that number. Because BMW’s cited figure and MG’s cited figure come from different procedures, placing 669 beside 580 does not establish a real-world winner.

How to use the numbers responsibly

  • Use the claims to understand each manufacturer’s certified positioning, not to plan a trip to the last kilometre.
  • Ask the dealer which exact variant, wheel and tyre configuration produced the quoted figure.
  • Plan charging with a reserve for speed, temperature, traffic, gradients, cabin climate control and detours.
  • Do not describe either number as an independently verified comparison: no named, independent head-to-head range test is established here.

For a long intercity journey, map dependable charging stops before departure and retain a reserve rather than treating the display estimate as a promise. For the BMW, verify that the quoted 669 km applies to the exact LWB configuration being sold. For the MG, retain the MIDC label whenever you repeat 580 km so readers do not mistake it for a result measured under BMW’s European procedure.

Performance and driving character

Cyberster’s published performance case

Cyberster’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive specification publishes 510 PS and 725 Nm, with a 0–100 km/h claim of 3.2 seconds. Those figures make acceleration the clearest numerical advantage in the cited comparison. They also explain why the MG is a specialist purchase: the powertrain and open roof are central to its appeal.

Acceleration is only one part of a roadster decision. Check seating position, pedal response, steering feel, ride comfort on your usual roads, wind noise with the roof open and closed, and whether the scissor-door operation suits your parking spaces. None of those impressions can be inferred from 510 PS or 3.2 seconds alone, so arrange a proper test drive rather than relying on the specification sheet.

Why an i5 output comparison would be misleading

The i5 LWB data cited here identify the eDrive35L M Sport variant and its battery and wheelbase, but do not establish a directly comparable acceleration or power figure for that exact car. Do not borrow a specification from a different i5 body style, market or trim and present it as an apples-to-apples result. The BMW’s case rests on space, refinement and usability; the MG’s published case rests on outright response and roadster theatre.

Space, seating and daily usability

Use case Better fit Reason
Regular rear passengers BMW i5 LWB Four-door cabin and long-wheelbase layout provide the relevant seating architecture.
Two-person weekend driving MG Cyberster Two seats, soft-top roof and roadster format prioritize the driving occasion.
Executive or chauffeur-style travel BMW i5 LWB Rear-seat access and passenger capacity matter more than convertible hardware.
Open-air motoring MG Cyberster It is the only convertible in this comparison.
One-car household needing broad flexibility BMW i5 LWB The sedan body is inherently more accommodating for passengers and routine errands.

These conclusions follow from body style and published specifications, not from a firsthand drive. A buyer who already has a practical family car can evaluate Cyberster as a second, recreational vehicle; a buyer seeking one vehicle should weigh the missing rear seats before considering performance statistics.

Think through the less glamorous trips as well: grocery bags, airport luggage, monsoon weather, office parking and passengers entering from a narrow kerbside space. The i5’s fixed roof and four doors are advantages in those situations. Cyberster’s appeal is strongest when the trip itself is the point, the weather cooperates and two-seat capacity is genuinely sufficient.

Charging equipment and ownership checks

MG’s July 2025 launch release said the launch price included a 3.3 kW portable charger and a 7.4 kW wall box with standard installation. That was a launch-offer statement, so confirm whether the current Cyberster price or BaaS contract includes the same equipment, installation limits and electrical-work exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited information does not establish current, model-specific charging times, BMW equipment inclusions or service coverage for every city. Obtain those details in writing for the exact vehicle. Before signing, verify:

  • AC wall-box model, installation scope, cable length and any meter or wiring work charged separately.
  • Portable-charger inclusion and its rated output.
  • DC charging compatibility, booked-site availability and billing at the routes you use.
  • Nearest authorized service facility and roadside-assistance coverage.
  • Whether software, battery diagnostics and scheduled maintenance are included in the quoted ownership plan.
  • Whether a test-drive or display car has the same wheels, tyres, software and charging hardware as the vehicle on your quotation.

Do not assume that a wall box included in a launch announcement remains part of every later booking. Ask for the current offer sheet, the installation address survey and a list of exclusions. Home electrical upgrades can be a separate expense even when standard installation is advertised.

Warranty and battery terms

MG’s 2025 launch release stated a three-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first owner at launch. “At launch” is important: confirm the current warranty booklet, exclusions, transferability and any BaaS-specific conditions before relying on that promise. The cited information does not establish a current BMW warranty term, so request BMW India’s written warranty for the selected i5 LWB rather than assuming it matches another BMW model.

For Cyberster BaaS, ask who owns the battery, what happens if the car is sold, whether rental continues with a second owner, and how damage, degradation or end-of-contract events are handled. Those contractual answers can materially change the apparent advantage of the lower purchase price. Also clarify whether the first-owner battery promise applies unchanged under BaaS and whether servicing, insurance or roadside assistance is tied to the original purchaser.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the BMW i5 LWB when:

  • You regularly carry adults in the rear seats.
  • This will be your primary or only car.
  • Passenger comfort, fixed-roof practicality and executive presence matter more than open-air excitement.
  • You want to evaluate a straightforward battery-included purchase price rather than a per-kilometre battery rental.
  • You prefer to base the decision on BMW’s published long-wheelbase format and range claim, while accepting that the test procedure differs from MG’s.

Choose the MG Cyberster when:

  • You need only two seats and want a convertible first.
  • Acceleration and the published 510 PS/725 Nm specification are central to your decision.
  • Electric scissor doors, a soft-top roof and a distinctive roadster experience justify the practical compromises.
  • You understand the difference between the ₹82,49,800 ex-showroom battery-included listing and the ₹72.49 lakh-plus-₹8/km BaaS structure.
  • You have confirmed current charging, warranty, service and resale terms for your city.

A buyer’s decision process

  1. Count seats before comparing numbers. If you need more than two seats, remove Cyberster from the shortlist.
  2. Choose the ownership structure. Request both the battery-included Cyberster quotation and the BaaS contract summary, then compare a realistic annual kilometre total.
  3. Normalize the price. Compare the same date, city, trim, tax basis, registration and included equipment for both cars.
  4. Check charging at home and on your routes. Verify electrical capacity, installation scope and dependable public chargers before delivery.
  5. Read warranty documents. Pay special attention to battery coverage, first-owner limits, transfer rules and exclusions.
  6. Test the actual use case. Sit in every seat you will use, load representative luggage and drive on roads similar to your commute.
  7. Make the final choice by mission. Select the i5 for passenger duty and the Cyberster for a two-seat convertible experience; do not let a single range or acceleration headline override the vehicle’s purpose.

Bottom line on BMW i5 LWB vs MG Cyberster

The BMW i5 LWB is the rational all-rounder between these two body styles: its long-wheelbase sedan format serves passengers, rear-seat comfort and daily flexibility. MG Cyberster is the specialist: its two-seat convertible layout, dual-motor system and claimed 3.2-second acceleration target buyers who want an event every time they drive. BMW India’s ₹79.60 lakh starting price, MG SELECT’s ₹82.498 lakh ex-showroom listing and MG’s ₹72.49 lakh-plus-₹8/km BaaS offer describe different dates and ownership structures. Get current written quotations and contracts, then choose the car whose mission matches your actual use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which car is cheaper, the BMW i5 LWB or MG Cyberster?

BMW India lists the i5 LWB from ₹79,60,000, while MG SELECT lists Cyberster at ₹82,49,800 ex-showroom. MG also announced a September 2026 BaaS price of ₹72.49 lakh plus ₹8 per kilometre, but that is not a battery-included price. Compare matching dates, trims, cities, taxes and ownership terms before calling either car cheaper.

Does the BMW i5 LWB have more range than Cyberster?

The published figures are up to 669 km for the BMW and 580 km MIDC for Cyberster. BMW says its number follows a prescribed European procedure, while MG labels its figure MIDC. Because the procedures differ, the two numbers cannot be treated as a direct real-world range test.

Is MG Cyberster practical as a family car?

It has two seats and a soft-top roof, so it cannot carry rear passengers. The BMW i5 LWB has four doors and a long-wheelbase cabin, making it the more suitable choice for regular family or executive passenger duty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Cyberster BaaS cost?

The September 17, 2026 announcement lists ₹72.49 lakh plus ₹8 per kilometre for battery rental. At 10,000 kilometres, the usage charge would be ₹80,000; at 20,000 kilometres, ₹1,60,000. Confirm billing rules, minimums, resale treatment, taxes and the signed contract terms.

What performance does MG Cyberster claim?

MG’s July 25, 2025 launch specification describes a dual-motor all-wheel-drive car with 510 PS, 725 Nm and a claimed 0–100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.

What charging equipment was announced for Cyberster?

MG’s 2025 launch release said the launch price included a 3.3 kW portable charger and a 7.4 kW wall box with standard installation. Confirm whether the current battery-included price or BaaS offer still includes those items and what installation work is excluded.

Does Cyberster have a lifetime battery warranty?

MG’s 2025 launch release stated a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first owner, alongside a three-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty. Verify the current warranty booklet, exclusions, transferability and any BaaS-specific conditions before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which car suits a one-car household?

The BMW i5 LWB is generally the better fit because its four-door, long-wheelbase sedan body accommodates regular passengers and everyday errands. Cyberster makes more sense as a two-seat recreational car or when open-air driving is the primary reason for purchase.

The Bottom Line

Choose the BMW i5 LWB for four-seat practicality and executive comfort. Choose the MG Cyberster for a two-seat convertible experience and stronger published performance figures. Compare current written quotations and the complete BaaS contract, not just headline prices.
