There is no single winner in the BMW i5 LWB versus Mercedes-Benz C-Class decision because they use different propulsion systems. BMW’s i5 eDrive35L M Sport is a fully electric, long-wheelbase sedan listed from ₹79,60,000 ex-showroom, while Mercedes-Benz India lists petrol and diesel mild-hybrid C-Class versions from ₹61,20,000. Choose the BMW if dependable charging and an EV routine suit your driving; choose a C 200 or C 220d if liquid-fuel refuelling and broader variant choice are more practical. A separately listed C-Class plug-in-hybrid/petrol model starts from ₹94,05,000 and is a different proposition again.
BMW i5 LWB and Mercedes-Benz C-Class: the fundamental difference
The i5 LWB and C-Class are both premium sedans, but this is not a like-for-like powertrain comparison. BMW positions the i5 LWB as a battery-electric car. The C 200 and C 220d entries on Mercedes-Benz India’s technical page are mild hybrids: they retain petrol or diesel engines and use a 20 hp electric-assistance system. That distinction changes how you buy, refuel, plan trips and evaluate running costs.

Mercedes-Benz India’s model listing covers several C-Class powertrains, including the C 200 petrol, C 220d diesel and a separately listed plug-in-hybrid/petrol version. Exact equipment, availability and local pricing depend on the variant and should be confirmed in the current India brochure or dealer quotation.

These are manufacturer listing prices, not matched on-road quotes. A lower starting price for the C-Class does not establish that a similarly equipped car will cost less after registration, insurance, optional equipment and service packages. Ask both retailers for a written quote for the exact trim, registration location, build year, delivery status and included equipment.

BMW’s configurator states that the displayed ex-showroom amount excludes road tax, TCS, RTO, insurance and other charges, and that the price may change. Mercedes-Benz also uses variant-dependent listings. Treat the numbers above as a point-in-time shopping reference rather than a guaranteed transaction price.
Powertrains and performance figures
BMW i5 LWB: battery electric
The i5 LWB uses a fully electric drivetrain. BMW’s India material claims up to 669 km under the MIDC test procedure (Part 1 + Part 2). This is a certified-cycle manufacturer claim, not a promise that every driver will travel 669 km between charges. BMW says actual distance varies with driving style, route, temperature and climate-control use.
The reviewed BMW pages do not provide a matching India-market engine-output, torque or acceleration table for a direct comparison with the C-Class figures below. Do not infer a performance winner from the badge or from the range number.

Mercedes-Benz C 200: petrol mild hybrid
Mercedes-Benz India’s technical page describes the C 200 as a 1,496 cc petrol mild hybrid. It lists 150 kW from the combustion engine plus 15 kW of electric assistance, expressed on the page as 204 hp + 20 hp, with 300 Nm of torque. The listed 0–100 km/h time is 7.3 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz C 220d: diesel mild hybrid
The C 220d is listed as a 1,993 cc diesel mild hybrid. Mercedes-Benz gives 147 kW plus 15 kW, or 200 hp + 20 hp, and 440 Nm of torque. Its listed 0–100 km/h time is also 7.3 seconds.

Those figures come from Mercedes-Benz India’s technical page. The page includes EU kerb-weight and emissions labels, so those labels should not be presented as India homologation data. Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class overview explicitly directs Indian buyers to the local product brochure or an authorised franchise partner for detailed India specifications and pricing.

Range, refuelling and charging: choose the routine you can sustain
What the i5’s 669 km claim does and does not tell you
MIDC is a laboratory test procedure. BMW’s “up to 669 km” wording means the result is a maximum certified-cycle figure under specified conditions. Highway speed, heavy traffic, hot or cold weather, passengers, luggage, tyre pressures and air-conditioning use can all change actual consumption. Use the figure to compare the manufacturer’s certification claim, then plan with a buffer for your own routes.

Their practical refuelling question is access to petrol or diesel rather than access to a charger. That makes them easier to use for drivers who cannot install charging at home, but it does not make their fuel consumption or cost automatically lower; those outcomes depend on fuel prices, annual distance, traffic and maintenance assumptions.
i5 charging capability
BMW says the i5 LWB accepts DC charging at up to 160 kW and claims a 10–80 percent charge in 33 minutes. The time is a manufacturer claim under suitable conditions, not a universal result at every public charger. Charger power, battery temperature, state of charge, site load and the vehicle’s charging curve can lengthen the stop.
For home use, BMW describes an 11 kW BMW Wallbox. Installation requires an appropriate electrical connection, a site survey and local approval where applicable. Do not assume that any generic wallbox will deliver the same result or that an installation is included in the vehicle price; ask the BMW retailer for the approved equipment, installation scope, warranty responsibilities and commissioning process.

BMW’s page also cites more than 10,000 charging points across India. That is a time-sensitive manufacturer network statement. Check the current network map, connector availability, operating status and payment requirements along your actual routes before relying on that number.

The i5 LWB is positioned as a long-wheelbase electric sedan, and BMW highlights rear-seat comfort in its positioning. However, the reviewed BMW India extract does not provide a matching dimensions table. It would therefore be inaccurate to declare the i5 the larger or more spacious car solely from the “LWB” name.
Mercedes-Benz’s reviewed technical page lists the C-Class at 4,751 mm long, 1,820 mm wide without mirrors and 1,438 mm high, with an 11.07 m turning circle. Those measurements should be checked against the current India brochure because the page’s technical context includes EU-labelled data and the overview tells Indian customers to consult local documentation.

If a chauffeur or frequent rear-seat passenger is central to the purchase, sit in the exact cars you can buy. Check knee room with the front seat set for the usual driver, door opening, seat-cushion angle, headroom, rear climate controls, charging ports and luggage access. Published wheelbase or exterior dimensions cannot substitute for that inspection, especially when comparing different body and market specifications.
Which buyer should investigate the BMW i5 LWB?
- Home or workplace charging is dependable. The i5’s advantages are practical only when you can charge predictably and have a backup plan for longer journeys.
- You want a fully electric luxury sedan. The i5 removes routine petrol or diesel stops, but replaces them with charging planning.
- Your daily use fits an overnight charging pattern. The 11 kW Wallbox description supports home charging, subject to electrical feasibility and installation terms.
- Rear-seat comfort is a priority. BMW’s long-wheelbase positioning makes the i5 worth a physical inspection for chauffeur-driven use, while exact local dimensions and equipment still need confirmation.
- You accept certified-cycle range as a planning reference, not a guarantee. Use the 669 km MIDC claim with a route and weather buffer.
Which buyer should investigate the Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
- You need petrol or diesel refuelling. The C 200 and C 220d do not require an EV charger for routine use.
- You want a lower listed entry price. Mercedes-Benz India lists petrol/diesel C-Class models from ₹61,20,000, although the exact on-road total and equipment must be quoted.
- You are choosing between petrol and diesel characteristics. The C 200 lists 300 Nm, while the C 220d lists 440 Nm; both are quoted at 7.3 seconds to 100 km/h on Mercedes-Benz’s page.
- You are considering a plug-in hybrid. The separately listed C-Class plug-in-hybrid/petrol model starts from ₹94,05,000, so ask for its exact electric range, charging requirements, tax treatment and equipment rather than treating it as the same car as the mild hybrids.
- You cannot yet verify local i5 charging access. A C-Class may be easier to operate immediately when home charging, workplace charging and reliable public chargers are unavailable.
Ownership-cost questions that require your numbers
It is tempting to declare the i5 cheaper to run because electricity can cost less per kilometre than fuel, or to declare the diesel C 220d cheaper for long-distance use. Neither conclusion follows from the specifications alone. Build a comparison using:

- the electricity tariff you will actually pay, including any time-of-use rate;
- petrol and diesel prices in your area;
- realistic consumption or efficiency data for the exact vehicle and route;
- home-charger purchase, wiring, installation and possible electrical-upgrade costs;
- public charging fees and occasional charging downtime;
- insurance, scheduled maintenance, tyres, warranty coverage and roadside assistance; and
- registration taxes and any state-specific incentives or restrictions.

- Confirm the exact variant. Write down the BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport or the specific C 200, C 220d or plug-in-hybrid designation, along with model year and build location.
- Obtain current ex-showroom and on-road quotes. Ensure both quotes show taxes, registration, insurance, accessories, charger installation and every discount separately.
- Request the current India brochure. Mercedes-Benz’s own overview directs buyers to the brochure or franchise partner for detailed local specifications and prices. BMW also advises confirming product specifications with an authorised dealer.
- Audit the charging plan if considering the i5. Get a written answer on Wallbox model, cable length, installation limits, electrical load, permissions, warranty and expected commissioning date.
- Test your real passenger and luggage use. Bring the people and bags that will normally travel in the car; inspect rear-seat access and boot usability.
- Map normal and exceptional journeys. Check live public-charger locations, connector type, payment method and alternatives for routes you regularly drive.
- Compare coverage, not just price. Read battery, vehicle, roadside-assistance and service-package terms, including exclusions and transfer rules.
- Check delivery reality. Ask whether the quoted car is allocated, in transit or a factory order, and whether the displayed price is locked until registration.
Common mistakes in this comparison
Treating the cars as direct powertrain rivals
A battery EV, a petrol mild hybrid, a diesel mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid answer different refuelling questions. Start with your energy access and route pattern before comparing acceleration or equipment.
Reading MIDC range as a guaranteed trip distance
The i5’s 669 km figure is an “up to” certified-cycle claim. It should not be converted into a fixed highway distance without accounting for conditions and a charging reserve.
Using an EU-labelled figure as Indian homologation data
Mercedes-Benz’s technical page includes EU kerb-weight and emissions labels and directs Indian buyers to local documentation. Keep those labels attached to their context.

Comparing starting prices as if equipment were matched
₹79,60,000 for the listed BMW and ₹61,20,000 for the petrol/diesel C-Class are not matched-trim on-road prices. Compare equipment, taxes, warranty and delivery terms line by line.

Assuming a public charging network is static
Charging-point counts and site availability change. Verify the stations you will actually use instead of relying on a nationwide headline number.
Verdict: which one makes sense for you?
Investigate the BMW i5 LWB first if you specifically want a fully electric luxury sedan, can install or reliably access charging, and value its long-wheelbase positioning. Its headline credentials are a BMW-claimed up-to-669-km MIDC range, DC charging up to 160 kW, a claimed 10–80 percent time of 33 minutes and an 11 kW Wallbox option. Those figures become useful only when your charging locations and travel pattern support them.
Investigate the Mercedes-Benz C-Class first if you prefer petrol or diesel refuelling, need a lower listed entry point, or are not ready to commit to an EV charging routine. The C 200 and C 220d are mild hybrids with different torque outputs but the same listed 0–100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. If the plug-in-hybrid/petrol C-Class interests you, evaluate it separately from both mild hybrids and request its exact local specifications.
