This is not a comparison between a China LWB car and a global standard-wheelbase car. The sensible buying decision starts with powertrain and charging or fueling, then moves to rear-seat use, exact local trim equipment, price and the model year you can actually order.

What “LWB” means in this BMW comparison
LWB means long wheelbase. In this case it identifies the China-market versions of the BMW i5 and BMW 5 Series, not a universal specification used in every country. BMW says these cars have a wheelbase extended by 12 cm compared with the versions offered worldwide. The extra length creates different proportions and is intended to increase rear passenger space.
BMW says the China-specific cars were tailored to local target groups and include market-specific equipment features and digital services. That means an equipment list for a 5 Series or i5 sold in Europe, North America or another region cannot be treated as the specification of the China LWB models.

The two cars share the same broad luxury-sedan mission, but their ownership experience diverges immediately: the i5 is electric, while the 5 Series range includes combustion-engine versions. BMW’s January 2024 China launch material listed the 525Li and 530Li; those launch-era versions do not confirm which trims remain available in 2026.

The output figures above are not a direct trim-to-trim test. The i5 figure comes from a launch-release configuration, while the 525Li and 530Li figures are launch-era listings. Match model year, trim, drivetrain and test basis before using them to make a performance decision.
Should you choose the electric i5 or petrol 5 Series?
Choose the i5 when charging is easy
The i5 makes the most sense when you can charge where the car spends time, such as at home, at work or at a reliable destination charger. Your routine should allow you to leave with a predictable state of charge rather than depending on a public charger for every trip.
- Daily pattern: frequent short and medium trips can fit naturally around overnight or workplace charging.
- Long trips: map charging locations and their reliability on the routes you use most, rather than assuming every public site will be available.
- Parking: confirm that your building, compound or workplace permits charging and that the electrical installation supports the intended equipment.
- Local support: check the exact i5 LWB variant’s charging system, connector and charging limits in the current China-market specification.
The available material does not establish a current 2026 range figure, charging time or charging-curve result for a specific China i5 LWB trim. Do not transfer a range or charging number from the global standard-wheelbase i5 xDrive40 or from a different model year.
Choose the 5 Series when fueling flexibility matters more
A combustion 5 Series can suit drivers who routinely travel beyond dependable charging coverage, share the car with people who do not want to plan charging stops, or cannot install a charger. Refueling is familiar and can be completed at stations along established routes.
The trade-off is that the 5 Series does not provide the i5’s all-electric driving experience. The supplied BMW launch material gives output for the 525Li and 530Li but does not provide a current 2026 fuel-consumption comparison.

Do not choose by badge alone
The i5 and 5 Series names identify related sedans, not identical powertrains, equipment or performance. A local 5 Series trim may have options that are standard on another trim, and the available i5 configuration may change by model year. Ask the seller for the exact China-market model code, battery or engine specification, standard equipment list and delivery-year status.

BMW states that the China-market 5 Series and i5 wheelbases are extended by 12 cm compared with the versions offered worldwide. That is the verified comparison figure. It describes the increase over the relevant worldwide versions; it is not, by itself, the absolute wheelbase measurement of every China-market trim.
BMW Group published a 2,995 mm wheelbase for the global standard-wheelbase i5 xDrive40 Sedan in March 2025. That number is useful only as a reminder that global technical specifications describe a different body. It should not be presented as the wheelbase of the China LWB car, and it should not be combined with the 12 cm extension to create a universal China-market figure for every trim.
The same caution applies to dimensions, turning data, luggage volume and curb weight. Confirm each value from the current China specification sheet for the exact car you are considering.
Rear-seat space: the main reason the LWB exists
BMW positions the extended body around rear-passenger accommodation. The 12 cm increase and altered proportions are intended to give passengers more room, making the rear compartment a central reason to select an LWB car over a standard-wheelbase version.

- Move the front passenger seat to the position used by the person who normally sits there, then sit directly behind it.
- Check knee clearance, foot placement, seat-cushion support and the ability to change posture.
- Test the center-rear position with the outer seats occupied if your family or chauffeur routine requires three rear passengers.
- Inspect door opening, sill height and the distance from the curb to the seat; a spacious cabin is not useful if entry is awkward.
- Operate every rear-seat adjustment, sunshade, climate control, charging port and storage feature included on the specific trim.
- Place the child seats, work bags or other items you actually carry in the cabin and trunk before ordering.
BMW’s general description establishes the LWB mission, but it does not establish a single list of rear-seat features for every 2026 trim. Verify items such as powered seat adjustment, ventilation, massage, screens, tables, shades and rear climate controls on the local trim sheet rather than assuming they are standard.

Performance: what the published numbers do and do not tell you
BMW’s launch release for the China-market i5 described 442 kW, or 601 hp, in SPORT mode. That is a combined maximum-output figure for the configuration described in that release. It is not evidence that every i5 LWB trim sold in 2026 produces the same output.
BMW’s January 2024 China launch material listed the 525Li at 140 kW/190 hp and the 530Li at 190 kW/258 hp. Those are launch-era figures, not confirmation of the current lineup. They also are not a controlled acceleration comparison against the i5’s SPORT-mode output.
For a meaningful performance comparison, obtain the current local figures for:
- exact trim and model year;
- maximum power and torque, including the measurement standard;
- drive layout and transmission;
- claimed acceleration and its test conditions;
- curb weight and wheel size;
- whether an electric output figure is temporary, combined or mode-specific.
Do not compare the i5’s 442 kW/601 hp launch figure with a 525Li or 530Li as though they were equivalent trims. The figures answer different questions and were published for different configurations.
Equipment and digital services: why China trim sheets matter
BMW explicitly describes market-specific equipment and digital services for the China LWB cars. A global brochure may omit, rename or package features differently from the China-market car. Even within China, a feature can depend on trim, package, production date or an option selected by the dealer.
Build a trim checklist
- Passenger comfort: rear-seat adjustment, ventilation, massage, heating, armrest controls, sunshades and rear climate functions.
- Infotainment: screen sizes, rear entertainment, navigation, smartphone integration and local connected services.
- Driver assistance: the included sensors, lane and parking functions, traffic-assist scope and any package restrictions.
- Convenience: keyless entry, powered trunk operation, remote functions and the charging or fueling information shown in the vehicle.
- Wheels and suspension: wheel size, tire specification, adaptive damping and any ride-height or comfort modes.
- Warranty and support: battery coverage for the i5, engine and drivetrain coverage for the 5 Series, roadside assistance and service intervals as stated for China.
Request the written standard-equipment list and the final vehicle configuration. “Available” in a brochure can mean optional, package-dependent or limited to a higher trim.

The available BMW material does not establish current 2026 China-market prices, trim names, option pricing or delivery availability. Launch releases should not be treated as a 2026 price list. Before comparing offers, record these details for both cars:
- model year and exact trim name;
- manufacturer’s suggested retail price and any official promotion period;
- included equipment and paid options;
- vehicle production date and expected delivery date;
- warranty terms, especially the i5 battery warranty;
- service plan, insurance, registration and financing charges;
- availability of the color, interior and wheel combination you want.
If a seller cannot provide a current specification sheet, treat the offer as unverified rather than filling gaps with a global brochure or an older launch article.

Can you charge at your normal parking space?
Confirm permission, installation responsibility, electrical capacity and billing. If you rent or use shared parking, get approval in writing and learn how access is controlled. A theoretical public-charging network is not a substitute for a workable routine at your home or workplace.
What happens on your longest regular journey?
List the route, weather conditions, passenger load and places where you could stop. Then check the current i5 LWB’s official range and charging specifications for that exact trim. The available material does not provide those figures, so they must come from the current local listing.

BMW identifies China-specific digital services, but availability can depend on market, subscription, network coverage and vehicle production date. Ask which services are included, which require payment and what happens if a service is discontinued.

The 525Li and 530Li appeared in BMW’s January 2024 China launch material, with 140 kW/190 hp and 190 kW/258 hp respectively. Confirm whether those names and outputs apply to the car offered to you in 2026, and ask for the current engine, transmission and emissions specification.
How will the car be used by rear passengers?
