Choose the BMW i5 LWB if you can charge at home and want quicker published acceleration, a longer claimed wheelbase and an electric driving experience. Choose the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long if petrol or diesel flexibility, fast conventional refuelling and chauffeur-oriented rear-seat use matter more. BMW’s i5 eDrive35L M Sport is listed at an introductory ₹79.60 lakh ex-showroom, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long starts at ₹81.50 lakh on its current India listing. Those prices are not perfectly like-for-like variants, and neither source establishes real-world range, total cost of ownership or a universal winner.
The short answer
This is primarily an electric-versus-combustion decision, not a simple equipment comparison. The BMW i5 Long Wheelbase uses one rear-mounted electric motor and an 81.6 kWh gross battery. Mercedes-Benz India lists the E-Class Long with petrol and diesel powertrains. The BMW makes the stronger paper case for a buyer with dependable home charging: BMW quotes 268 hp, 410 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and up to 669 km on the MIDC test cycle. The E-Class is the lower-dependency choice for drivers who do not want to plan charging or who regularly use routes where a fuel station is easier to find than a high-power charger.

For a chauffeur-driven buyer, test the exact rear seat before deciding. The i5 has a 3,105 mm wheelbase and rear-axle air suspension, while the E-Class is explicitly positioned around rear-seat comfort. Exterior dimensions alone cannot prove which cabin will suit your passengers.

BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport
BMW India launched the i5 Long Wheelbase in India on September 7, 2026. The locally produced sedan is built at BMW’s Plant Chennai, and BMW said deliveries would begin immediately. The launch price of ₹79,60,000 is an introductory ex-showroom figure for the i5 eDrive35L M Sport and the First Edition. It excludes road tax, TCS, RTO statutory charges, other local levies and insurance, and BMW says the price can change.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long
Mercedes-Benz India’s current model listing describes the E-Class Sedan Long and shows petrol and diesel versions. Its starting price is ₹81,50,000, with a warning that customization can change the price and that detailed specifications should be confirmed in the product brochure or with a franchise partner. The manufacturer’s product page also discusses plug-in-hybrid E-Class information; that should not be confused with the petrol and diesel E-Class Long versions relevant here.
For a diesel-specific reference, Autocar India’s September 12, 2026 comparison lists the E 220d at ₹83.50 lakh, 197 hp, 440 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. These are secondary-source figures, so confirm the current E 220d brochure and dealer quote before signing.
Price and availability in India
| Car and price context | Published figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport / First Edition | ₹79,60,000 | BMW India introductory ex-showroom price announced September 7, 2026; excludes road tax, TCS, RTO charges, local levies and insurance; subject to change. |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Long | From ₹81,50,000 | Mercedes-Benz India current listing accessed October 13, 2026; customization and exact variant can alter the price. |
| Mercedes-Benz E 220d reference | ₹83.50 lakh | Autocar India comparison figure dated September 12, 2026; a diesel-specific secondary-source price, not the manufacturer’s general starting price. |
The BMW’s introductory number is ₹1.90 lakh below Mercedes-Benz India’s listed starting price, but comparing an introductory BMW trim with a Mercedes range-start figure can mislead. Obtain city-specific on-road quotations for the exact engine, options, insurance and registration before treating the difference as a purchase saving.
Powertrain and published performance
| Specification | BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport | Mercedes-Benz E 220d reference |

| Energy source | Battery electric | Diesel |
| Motor or engine output | 268 hp | 197 hp |

| Driven wheels | Rear-wheel drive | Not stated in the cited comparison material |
| 0–100 km/h | 6.7 seconds | 7.6 seconds |
| Top speed | 195 km/h | Not stated |
BMW’s figures come from its September 2026 launch release. The E 220d numbers come from Autocar India’s September 12, 2026 article. They are published specifications, not results from a back-to-back controlled test. The BMW’s quicker claimed sprint should be noticeable in overtaking and merging, while the Mercedes’ higher listed torque does not by itself make it faster from rest; gearing, traction and power delivery also matter.

What the performance difference means on the road
- Urban driving: The i5’s electric motor delivers immediate response without gear changes. Its advantage is strongest when you value quiet, instant acceleration rather than high-speed engine character.
- Highway use: The BMW’s 195 km/h quoted top speed and 6.7-second sprint are ample for Indian highways, but sustained high-speed driving can reduce an EV’s usable range. The E-Class can be refuelled conventionally during a brief stop.
- Chauffeur use: Smoothness and rear-seat isolation may matter more than the acceleration figures. Drive both cars over broken surfaces with the intended passengers before deciding.
Range, charging and refuelling
BMW i5: a large battery, but a test-cycle claim
BMW quotes an 81.6 kWh gross battery and up to 669 km on the MIDC test cycle. MIDC is a laboratory test result, not a guaranteed distance in Indian traffic, with air-conditioning, passenger load, speed or monsoon conditions. Treat 669 km as a comparison figure for the manufacturer’s test protocol, not a promise for every route.
The i5 supports DC fast charging up to 160 kW. BMW states that a 10–80% charge can take 33 minutes under suitable conditions. Actual time depends on the charger, battery temperature, state of charge, electrical supply and whether the station can deliver the car’s maximum input. BMW also describes a Charging Concierge that plans longer journeys around active chargers; verify charger availability and route coverage for your own cities.
BMW says an 11 kW BMW Wallbox with installation is included for home charging. Confirm what installation covers at your address: cable route, civil work, meter capacity, earthing, parking access and any society permissions can affect practical completion. Because the wallbox is stated to be included, do not automatically budget for a separate charger until the purchase package is written into the quotation.
The high-voltage battery warranty is stated as eight years or 160,000 km, and the standard vehicle warranty as two years with unlimited kilometres. Confirm the current warranty document, exclusions and roadside-assistance terms before delivery.
E-Class Long: conventional refuelling flexibility
The petrol and diesel E-Class Long versions do not require access to a home charger. A fuel stop is generally simpler to plan on routes with limited charging infrastructure, which is the central practical advantage over the i5 for many intercity users. The supplied Mercedes-Benz material does not provide a comparable current fuel-economy, tank-capacity or real-world range figure, so a numerical range victory for the diesel cannot be established here.

Size, wheelbase and ride hardware
| Dimension or hardware | BMW i5 LWB | Mercedes-Benz E 220d reference |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 5,175 mm | 5,092 mm |
| Width | 2,156 mm | 1,880 mm |
| Height | 1,520 mm | 1,493 mm |
| Wheelbase | 3,105 mm | 3,094 mm |
| Rear suspension highlighted in source material | Adaptive rear-axle air suspension; enhanced ground clearance highlighted by BMW | Not stated in the cited E 220d comparison material |
The BMW dimensions are from BMW Group India’s launch release. The Mercedes figures are from Autocar India’s September 12, 2026 article. The large width difference should be read cautiously because published measurement conventions can differ; it is not proof that the BMW offers a categorically wider or more comfortable cabin. Measure your parking space and test door clearance, especially if the car will use a narrow apartment bay.
Recommended Free Tools
The i5’s longer wheelbase is relevant to rear-legroom potential, while its rear-axle air suspension is intended to support ride comfort and load carrying. Neither source is a hands-on ride comparison, so surface quality, tyre specification and the exact Mercedes trim still need an on-road evaluation.
Cabin, comfort and technology
BMW equipment called out for the i5
BMW’s launch material lists 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, an illuminated grille, a panoramic glass roof, Veganza vegan upholstery, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound, eight airbags and rear-axle air suspension. The First Edition adds rear-seat entertainment equipment and distinctive trim, but its 99-unit allocation was reported sold out before launch. Equipment can depend on specification or change, so have every promised feature written on the variant quotation.
Mercedes-Benz equipment and the standard-equipment caveat
Mercedes-Benz describes the latest-generation MBUX system, an available MBUX Superscreen with a front-passenger display, comfort seats, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera with parking assistance, Active Brake Assist and Blind Spot Assist. The product page explicitly warns that equipment shown may not be part of series production. Treat these as feature descriptions, not confirmation that every Indian E-Class Long carries every item. The brochure and vehicle identification number should settle the question.
How to judge rear-seat suitability
- Set the front passenger seat for the tallest regular occupant, then sit behind it with your shoes flat on the floor.
- Check thigh support, seat-back angle, headroom and the ability to enter and exit without brushing the door or roof.
- Test the middle rear position, charging ports, climate controls, sun protection and the view through the rear glass.
- Drive over speed breakers and uneven roads with the intended passengers; a static showroom impression cannot show suspension behaviour.
Which car fits which ownership pattern?
Choose the BMW i5 when home charging is dependable
- You have a dedicated parking space and permission to install the included wallbox.
- Most daily journeys are predictable, allowing overnight charging.
- You value the i5’s published 6.7-second acceleration and quiet electric operation.
- Rear legroom, a 3,105 mm wheelbase and the BMW’s specified equipment are priorities.
- You are comfortable checking charger availability before longer trips.
Choose the E-Class Long when refuelling simplicity comes first
- Your parking space cannot support a charger or your electricity supply needs expensive upgrades.
- You regularly travel between cities where fuel stations are more convenient than high-power chargers.
- You want a petrol or diesel choice rather than committing to a battery-electric powertrain.
- The car will be used mainly with a chauffeur and rear-seat comfort takes precedence over electric acceleration.
- You prefer a conventional refuelling routine and do not want route planning to include charging stops.
For mixed use, do not decide from the brochure alone
A buyer who has home charging but makes occasional long trips may find the i5 perfectly workable if the actual routes have reliable active chargers. A buyer who mostly drives in town but lacks a private parking bay may find the E-Class easier despite higher fuel expenditure. The correct answer depends on parking, electricity access, trip length, passenger needs and local dealer support; the published data cannot turn those variables into a universal total-cost verdict.

Ownership costs and claims that should not be assumed
No individualized total cost of ownership is established for either car. Electricity tariffs, diesel and petrol prices, annual mileage, insurance, service plans, financing, taxes and charger installation differ by city and owner. The BMW’s lower introductory ex-showroom price does not automatically mean a lower on-road or lifetime cost, and the E-Class’s fuel requirement does not quantify a penalty without your usage data.
Similarly, BMW’s 669 km claim should not be converted into a guaranteed tank-equivalent distance, and the E-Class diesel should not be assigned a specific range or economy figure without a current India specification. Ask each dealer for the same items: on-road price, warranty, service package, insurance, roadside assistance, tyre coverage and any mandatory accessories.
Test-drive and purchase checklist
- Match the variants: Request the BMW i5 eDrive35L M Sport quotation and identify the exact Mercedes petrol or diesel E-Class Long variant. Do not compare a Mercedes range-start price with a higher-option E 220d without labelling the difference.
- Verify availability: Confirm that the BMW is a regular M Sport allocation, not the sold-out 99-unit First Edition, and check the Mercedes delivery timeline for your city.
- Inspect charging feasibility: Obtain written confirmation of the included wallbox, installation scope, cable length, electrical requirements and commissioning date. Check apartment or workplace permissions.
- Map real routes: List your weekday kilometres and two longest annual trips. For the i5, identify active DC chargers and backup locations; for the E-Class, identify convenient fuel stops and service coverage.
- Drive with passengers: Use the same roads, speed breakers and parking manoeuvres in both cars. Evaluate rear-seat entry, ride, noise, visibility and turning clearance.
- Check the build sheet: Confirm wheels, tyres, upholstery, entertainment, lighting, driver-assistance features, airbags and camera equipment on the exact vehicle. Mercedes’ display warning means an item shown online may not be standard.
- Read warranty documents: Verify the BMW eight-year/160,000 km battery coverage, two-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and the corresponding Mercedes vehicle, battery or hybrid terms for the chosen powertrain.
- Recheck the final price: Ask for a dated, city-specific on-road quote that separates ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, TCS, road tax, local levies, accessories and service plans.
Verdict: BMW i5 LWB for prepared EV owners, E-Class Long for maximum refuelling flexibility
The BMW i5 LWB wins the paper comparison on acceleration, wheelbase and electric smoothness, while its ₹79.60 lakh introductory ex-showroom price is below Mercedes-Benz India’s ₹81.50 lakh starting listing. Its case is strongest when a buyer can install and use the included 11 kW wallbox, accepts that 669 km is an MIDC claim, and has workable charging on longer routes.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long remains the more flexible choice of powertrain and refuelling method. Its petrol and diesel range suits owners who cannot charge at home, travel through uneven charging networks or place conventional chauffeur use ahead of electric performance. The E 220d’s published 197 hp, 440 Nm and 7.6-second sprint make it a credible diesel alternative, but the cited figures and ₹83.50 lakh price are secondary-source, variant-specific references.
Before paying a booking amount, drive the exact trims, measure your parking and obtain current local quotations. That practical check—not the headline range or starting price—decides whether the BMW i5 LWB or Mercedes-Benz E-Class Long is the better car for your household.
