The number depends on the exact trim, model year, market, wheels and tires, weather, route, and speed. BMW’s preliminary U.S. estimates for the 2026 i4 span 232–333 miles under ideal conditions, while independent testing of one eDrive35 shows how much consumption can change between mild-weather driving, a highway cycle, and a cold test.
How far can a BMW i4 go on a full charge?
For the 2026 U.S.-market i4, BMW lists estimated ranges of 307–333 miles for the eDrive40, 268–287 miles for the xDrive40, and 232–278 miles for the M60. BMW describes these as estimates under ideal conditions, and notes that some new model-year range figures may not yet be EPA-certified. They are useful comparison points, not promises of the distance a particular driver will cover. BMW USA’s 2026 i4 overview has the current U.S. figures.

BMW’s November 6, 2025 U.S. release gives wheel-package-specific preliminary blended estimates for two versions: eDrive40 is estimated at 333 miles with 18-inch wheels and 307 miles with 19-inch wheels; M60 is estimated at 278 miles with 19-inch wheels and 232 miles with 20-inch wheels. BMW says the eDrive40’s range improvement comes from silicon carbide (SiC) components in the power electronics, which improve energy-transfer efficiency. The wheel-package figures show that configuration matters, but they do not isolate wheel size as the only cause of the difference. BMW Group PressClub USA’s 2026 i4 update provides those estimates.
U.S. EPA and European WLTP numbers are different measures
Do not compare U.S. estimates directly with European WLTP figures as if the cars had been tested under one shared protocol. BMW’s July 2025 European update lists 510–613 km WLTP for the eDrive40 and 433–551 km WLTP for the M60 xDrive. BMW attributes around 4.5% lower consumption and up to 22 km additional range to the SiC inverter, depending on model and equipment. These European figures use a different market context, vehicle configuration, and test cycle from the U.S. estimates. BMW Group’s European i4 update gives the WLTP figures.

What independent testing says about real-world range
Green NCAP’s 2024 tests are a useful illustration of how conditions affect an i4, but the tested car was an eDrive35—not every current i4 trim. On an on-road drive at roughly 17°C, Green NCAP recorded consumption of about 18 kWh/100 km, corresponding to an estimated 424 km in that test. Its highway cycle measured 24.9 kWh/100 km. In a cold ambient test at -7°C, consumption was 34.1 kWh/100 km; Green NCAP attributed the high demand to cabin-heating comfort and rapid warm-up. The datasheet reports an overall average test range of 378 km and a worst-case range of 220 km. These are results for that test vehicle and protocol, not a forecast for another i4 or an owner’s particular trip. Green NCAP’s 2024 BMW i4 eDrive35 datasheet describes the tests.
Why your range differs from the official estimate
EPA range labels are based on laboratory dynamometer testing over city and highway cycles, with adjustments intended to account for real-world factors that the cycles do not represent directly. The EPA names air conditioning, cold temperatures, high speed, and aggressive driving as examples. Adjusted city and highway range values are then weighted 55% and 45%, respectively, to produce the combined figure on the label. That makes the estimate a standardized comparison point—not a guarantee for a fast highway drive in winter. The EPA’s fuel-economy test-schedule explanation describes the methodology.

BMW also lists vehicle model, tire and wheel selection, driving style, accessories, traffic, outside temperature, and charging frequency among factors that can change actual range. Their effects vary with circumstances; there is no supported fixed mileage penalty for each factor. Sustained high speeds and cold-weather heating can matter particularly because both increase energy demand, but the test evidence above should not be turned into a universal loss percentage for every i4.

The available evidence does not establish one winter-loss percentage for every i4 trim. Green NCAP’s eDrive35 consumed 34.1 kWh/100 km in its -7°C cold ambient test, compared with about 18 kWh/100 km on a roughly 17°C on-road drive. Those were different test conditions, and the result is not a direct prediction of how much range a specific owner will lose in winter. Battery temperature, cabin-heating use, route, speed, and the car’s configuration all affect the outcome.

BMW says cold weather can reduce range because low temperatures can limit usable battery capacity and cabin heating uses energy. Its recommendations are to precondition the car before a journey, preferably while it is still charging; select an economical driving mode; and use seat or window heating, which BMW says uses less battery than heating the cabin after departure. These are ways to reduce avoidable energy use, not guaranteed mileage increases. BMW’s guidance on electric-car range and cold weather covers these recommendations.
How to estimate range for your own routes
For a useful personal estimate, compare several representative trips rather than relying on one dashboard prediction. Record the distance and displayed consumption, along with outside temperature, average speed, wheel and tire configuration, and cabin-heating use. Include the kind of driving you actually do: a repeated commute, sustained highway travel, or short winter trips can produce different results.

The dashboard’s remaining-range estimate is not a controlled range test; it reflects recent driving and conditions, while your next route may differ. The published figures here do not establish a population-wide average for BMW i4 owners, so a claim that a typical owner gets one specific mileage figure is not supported.

How to compare i4 range claims fairly
- Match the market and model year. A U.S. EPA estimate and a European WLTP figure are not interchangeable.
- Compare the same trim and, where listed, the same wheel-and-tire package.
- Check whether a figure is a manufacturer estimate, an official label value, or the result of a specifically identified independent test.
- Match the use case that matters: sustained highway speed and winter heating can make a different comparison more useful than a headline maximum.
- Do not treat a single test vehicle’s result as representative of every i4 version or every owner.
For example, the U.S. eDrive40’s 333-mile estimate with 18-inch wheels and 307-mile estimate with 19-inch wheels are BMW’s preliminary blended estimates for those packages. They are not a controlled test proving that wheel diameter alone explains the full difference.
