The survey measured problems reported by owners of 2022 vehicles after three years, so it does not establish that a new 2025 luxury car is the most reliable choice.
What the 2025 dependability results say
J.D. Power’s VDS ranks vehicles by problems owners reported per 100 vehicles, abbreviated PP100. Lower scores mean fewer reported problems in the study; the score is not a percentage of vehicles that broke down.

The 2025 study drew on responses from 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork took place from August through November 2024. The survey covered 184 problem areas across nine categories, including infotainment, features and displays, climate, driving assistance, interior, powertrain and seats. Its findings are retrospective comparisons of the surveyed vehicles, not a forecast or guarantee for later model years. J.D. Power’s study release provides the methodology and results.

These are brand-level comparisons, not a ranked list of individual luxury cars. J.D. Power also reported Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as the industry’s top problem for a second consecutive year, a reminder that dependability surveys count technology complaints as well as mechanical issues. The study’s director of auto benchmarking, Jason Norton, linked the rise in reported problems to disruption during the period when the surveyed vehicles were built, including supply-chain and staffing challenges. The Lexus GX is a model-level standout—with an important caveat
J.D. Power’s 2025 award list names the Lexus GX among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model award recipients. That makes it a specific luxury SUV to investigate, rather than an inference based only on Lexus’s brand score. The award concerns the 2022 model year, however, and does not prove that the 2025 GX—or every GX year and configuration—will perform the same way.
J.D. Power’s dependability ratings page describes ratings based on feedback from verified owners of three-year-old vehicles. Its segment results include the 2022 Lexus GX in Midsize Premium SUV and the 2022 BMW 3 Series in Compact Premium Car. Segment recognition can help narrow research, but it is not a single ranking of every luxury sedan and SUV against one another.

Why another 2025 ranking may name different brands
Consumer Reports’ 2025 Auto Brand Report Card placed BMW second and Lexus third overall, behind Subaru. That does not contradict J.D. Power’s Lexus result: the publications measure different things. Consumer Reports combines road-test results, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction and safety into an overall brand score. It says its 2025 report card drew on owner-survey data covering about 300,000 vehicles from model years 2000 to 2024 and early 2025. Its order is therefore useful broader context, not a pure reliability ranking or a direct comparison with J.D. Power PP100. Consumer Reports explains its brand report card.

How to use these findings when shopping
- Start with the exact model year. Treat the GX award as evidence about the 2022 vehicle in the study, not a guarantee for a 2025 model. Look for evidence specific to the year you are considering.
- Compare like with like. Match body style, vehicle segment and powertrain when comparing results. A brand-level score and an award for one model answer different questions.
- Check the individual vehicle. For a used car, review its history, maintenance records and present condition; a study average cannot tell you how a particular car was treated or maintained.
- Read the measure, not just the rank. A lower PP100 means fewer reported problems in J.D. Power’s survey. A combined brand score such as Consumer Reports’ includes factors beyond reliability and should not be treated as the same metric.
J.D. Power’s 2025 study also reported vehicle-type averages: hybrids at 199 PP100, gas vehicles at 200, battery-electric vehicles at 223, diesel vehicles at 233 and plug-in hybrids at 242. These figures cover all study vehicles, not luxury cars alone, so they should not be used as luxury-only powertrain rankings.
