Rain and Road are the sensible choices when grip or weather is changing, while Race is the sport-focused standard map. Race Pro is not fitted to every motorcycle: it is added by Riding Modes Pro on the M Sport configuration and lets you adjust engine characteristics, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and the ABS system separately.
Every F 450 RR also has BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), DTC and engine-drag-torque control (MSR). Its chassis uses a 43 mm upside-down fork with 140 mm of front and rear travel. Preload and rebound damping are adjustable on the standard suspension; Sport suspension, listed for Sport and M Sport equipment variants, adds fork compression adjustment.

What the F 450 RR riding modes actually change
BMW describes Rain, Road and Race as ways to adapt the motorcycle to different conditions, but it does not publish a complete mode-by-mode calibration table. That means there is no official chart showing a precise throttle percentage, DTC intervention threshold or ABS level for each mode. The useful distinction is therefore the mode’s intended response and intervention strategy, not a claimed set of unpublished numbers.

| Mode | Throttle and engine character | DTC and chassis assistance | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain | Most conservative response of the three standard maps; designed to make limited grip easier to manage. | Assistance is oriented toward stability on slippery or uncertain surfaces. BMW does not publish a numeric intervention value. | Wet roads, cold tires, painted markings, leaves, gravel contamination or unfamiliar low-grip conditions. |
| Road | Balanced response for normal street riding and changing conditions. | Full road-oriented electronic assistance remains available, with no published numeric DTC or ABS calibration. | Daily riding, commuting and mixed weather when maximum sport response is unnecessary. |
| Race | Sport-oriented standard response intended for committed riding on a dry, predictable surface. | Allows more aggressive riding than the conservative maps, but BMW does not publish a complete intervention matrix. | Dry roads, controlled practice and track riding when Race Pro is not fitted. |
| Race Pro | Adjustable engine characteristics rather than one fixed “more power” switch. | Individual configuration of engine characteristics, DTC and ABS is available through Riding Modes Pro. | Fine-tuning for a rider, tire and circuit; available on the M Sport configuration with Riding Modes Pro. |
Rain mode
Rain is the logical first selection when the road is wet, temperatures are low or the surface has uncertain grip. Its purpose is controllability: smoother responses and a larger electronic safety margin give the rider more time to react to wheel slip. It cannot create grip, shorten a contaminated-road stopping distance or make inappropriate speed safe. Keep inputs smooth and reduce speed when standing water, oil, mud or debris is present.

Road mode
Road is the all-round setting. It suits ordinary traffic, dry or damp pavement and rides in which you want predictable response without the sharper character of Race. It is also a sensible default after a fuel stop or when conditions change during a ride. Select Road when you do not have a specific reason to use Rain or Race.
Race mode
Race is the sport-focused standard map. Use it only when tires are up to temperature, the surface is clean and you have room to manage stronger responses. “Race” does not mean the motorcycle has disabled its safety systems: ABS Pro, DBC, DTC and MSR continue to operate. Their exact behavior is governed by BMW’s calibration and, where fitted, your Race Pro settings.
Race Pro and Riding Modes Pro
Race Pro is an equipment-dependent feature, not a fourth mode on every F 450 RR. BMW states that Riding Modes Pro on the M Sport configuration allows customization of engine characteristics, DTC and ABS. Treat those as separate adjustments. A sharper engine setting does not automatically require the most permissive DTC setting, and changing ABS behavior does not change suspension damping.

ABS Pro, DBC, DTC and MSR: how the systems work together
BMW Motorrad ABS Pro
ABS Pro is standard equipment. BMW describes it as supporting braking even when the motorcycle is leaned over, using the motorcycle’s motion and lean information to help manage brake pressure. It is an aid, not permission to brake later than visibility, tires or traffic allow. Braking while leaned still consumes available tire grip, and a mid-corner emergency stop can require the motorcycle to stand up and run wide.
Dynamic Brake Control
DBC is a standard assistance system that operates with the braking system and ABS Pro. It is intended to support effective braking when the rider applies the brakes in an emergency. BMW’s retrieved material does not publish a rider-adjustable DBC map, so do not look for a separate DBC level in the mode menu.
Dynamic Traction Control
DTC monitors wheel-speed and other chassis information to limit excessive rear-wheel slip. In Rain, Road and Race it works as part of the mode’s overall calibration. Race Pro allows individual DTC configuration, but the published BMW material does not provide a universal level chart or promise that one level is correct for every tire, temperature or track.
Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR)
MSR manages excessive rear-wheel slip caused by abrupt engine-braking torque, such as a rapid downshift on a low-grip surface. It complements DTC rather than replacing it: DTC addresses drive slip under acceleration, while MSR addresses instability caused by engine drag. Both systems can matter when you change modes or alter riding technique.

F 450 RR suspension hardware and equipment differences
BMW’s technical data lists a 43 mm upside-down telescopic fork and 140 mm of front and rear suspension travel. The standard arrangement provides adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Sport suspension adds adjustable compression damping at the fork, giving you another way to control how quickly the fork moves into its stroke under braking and over bumps.
| Equipment level | Front fork | Rear suspension | Adjustment significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard suspension | 43 mm upside-down fork; preload and rebound adjustable. | 140 mm travel; preload and rebound adjustable in the standard arrangement. | Set rider support with preload, then control extension speed with rebound. |
| Sport suspension | 43 mm fork with preload, rebound and compression adjustment. | 140 mm travel with the standard rear adjustment arrangement. | Compression adjustment lets you tune fork movement during braking, turn-in and sharp impacts. |
BMW lists Sport suspension on the Sport and M Sport equipment variants. Equipment availability can vary by market, so verify the specification sheet for the exact motorcycle rather than assuming every F 450 RR has the same adjusters.
How to set up the suspension without a misleading click number
BMW does not publish one universal numeric setup for every rider, tire, luggage load and surface. A factory click count would be wrong for many owners, especially when rider mass, riding position, tire construction and temperature differ. Use a repeatable baseline process instead.
- Confirm the hardware. Identify whether the motorcycle has standard or Sport suspension and locate each adjuster. Do not attempt to turn a compression adjuster that your fork does not have.
- Set the motorcycle’s normal load. Wear the gear you ride in and add the luggage or passenger load you expect to carry. Suspension balance changes when that load changes.
- Set sag with spring preload. Measure the suspension fully extended and again with the rider in position. Adjust preload so the motorcycle sits in a controlled part of its available travel, without using preload to compensate for an incorrect spring rate. If you cannot achieve a sensible position within the adjuster’s range, seek a suspension technician rather than forcing a maximum or minimum setting.
- Start rebound near the documented baseline. Use the owner documentation for the adjuster’s direction and any market-specific starting position. Turn in small, recorded increments. Too much rebound can leave the suspension packed down over a series of bumps; too little can make the motorcycle feel loose or pogo-like after an impact.
- Add fork compression adjustment only when fitted. On Sport suspension, use compression to control how quickly the fork takes a hit or dives under braking. Make one small change, ride the same section of road and compare. If the fork becomes harsh over small ripples, reverse the change.
- Test under repeatable conditions. Use the same tire pressures, route and fuel load for each comparison. Evaluate braking support, turn-in, mid-corner bumps and drive out separately rather than changing several adjusters at once.
- Record the result. Write down preload position, rebound setting, compression setting if present, tire model and pressure, rider/load and weather. Keep separate notes for solo road, luggage and track use.
Symptoms that point to the wrong adjustment
- Front dives excessively under braking: check sag and spring preload first; on Sport suspension, then evaluate fork compression.
- Front feels harsh over small bumps: compression may be too restrictive, or rebound may be preventing the fork from returning between impacts.
- Rear continues to bounce after a bump: rebound damping may be too light.
- Bike feels stiff and loses grip over a series of bumps: rebound may be too heavy, leaving the suspension compressed.
- Steering changes after luggage is added: reset sag and check that the additional load has not exceeded the luggage system’s limits.
These symptoms are diagnostic clues, not a substitute for inspection. A damaged tire, incorrect pressure, worn component or loose fastener can feel like a damping problem.

Choosing a mode and setup for common rides
Wet commute or cold morning
Select Rain, use conservative throttle and leave larger following distances. Check tire condition and pressure before departure. Suspension changes are rarely the first remedy for a slippery commute; correct tires, visibility and speed matter more.
Dry public-road ride
Road is the sensible baseline. Move to Race only when the road is clean, sight lines are good and you are comfortable with a sharper response. Keep ABS Pro and the other standard assistance systems available; there is no need to chase a track setting on public roads.
Track day
Begin with Race and a known tire-pressure plan, then use Race Pro only if the M Sport motorcycle has Riding Modes Pro. Adjust one electronic parameter at a time and leave enough margin to learn the circuit. Confirm every menu warning and limit in the owner’s documentation before reducing intervention.
Rough pavement or touring load
Road mode and a correctly set sag are usually a better starting point than Race. Recheck preload when luggage is fitted, then tune rebound for the loaded motorcycle. If the fork has Sport compression adjustment, prioritize comfort and wheel control over a firm feel.

Buying and equipment checks before you set anything
Confirm the equipment package before planning your setup. Race Pro depends on Riding Modes Pro and the M Sport configuration. Sport suspension is listed for Sport and M Sport variants. A motorcycle advertised simply as an “F 450 RR” may therefore have different adjusters and electronic menus depending on country and option list.
BMW lists model-specific accessories such as a radiator grille guard, axle protectors, sport and low seats, sport windscreens, a tank bag and soft cases. Protection and luggage can change weight distribution, so include any fitted accessories when you set sag and evaluate handling.
Safe operating checklist
- Verify which mode and Race Pro parameters are selected before moving off.
- Use Rain or Road when grip, visibility or traffic is uncertain.
- Remember that ABS Pro assists leaned braking but cannot overcome tire or surface limits.
- Check tire pressure, tire condition and suspension leaks before tuning damping.
- Change one setting at a time and record every adjustment.
- Use the market-specific owner’s manual for menu procedures, warnings and selectable ABS or DTC levels; BMW’s public product material does not publish a universal level chart.
The practical answer is simple: use Rain, Road and Race as condition-based starting maps, reserve Race Pro’s independent adjustments for the M Sport-equipped motorcycle, and tune suspension around sag, rebound, surface and load rather than a copied click count. That approach matches what BMW actually specifies and leaves the final setting to the rider, tires and road in front of the motorcycle.
