Short answer: BMW does not guarantee a single mileage for every electric motor. A specialist guide commonly places the 2014–2021 BMW i3 drive unit at about 200,000 km (124,000 miles), but bearings, mounts, inverter electronics, cooling, software, use and model year can shorten or extend that figure. Repair economics depend on which part failed: a used i3 drive unit is estimated at $315–$2,500, a remanufactured unit at $3,000–$5,000, and a new unit at $7,000–$14,000 or more, before roughly $1,200–$6,200 or more in installation labor.
How long does a BMW electric motor last?
BMW does not publish one fleet-wide service-life promise for every battery-electric model. Electric motors generally have fewer wear parts than combustion engines, but the complete drive unit also includes bearings, reduction gearing, resolver sensors, mounts, seals, cooling hardware and power electronics. Any of those parts can disable propulsion before the motor windings themselves fail.

That is a field estimate, not a BMW engineering guarantee, maintenance interval or warranty limit. It should not be transferred automatically to an i4, iX, i5, i7 or another model.

What changes the real service life
- Bearing and gear wear: rumbling, whining or speed-related vibration can indicate mechanical wear even when the motor still produces normal power.
- Motor mounts: early i3 mount failures can create clunks or movement that is sometimes mistaken for an internal motor fault.
- Resolver or position-sensor damage: inaccurate rotor-position information can cause reduced power, warning messages or a no-drive condition.
- Inverter and EME electronics: the electronic motor-control unit can fail independently of the mechanical motor.
- Cooling and contamination: coolant loss, overheating or gearbox-fluid contamination can damage bearings, gears or electronics.
- Operating conditions: repeated high-load driving, towing where permitted, extreme temperatures, impact damage and neglected warning signs all affect durability.
Mileage alone cannot establish how much life remains. A quiet drive unit with documented maintenance and no diagnostic faults may outlast a lower-mileage unit that has suffered overheating, water intrusion or repeated electrical faults.

Which BMW component actually failed?
“Electric-motor failure” is often used for several different faults. A written diagnostic report should identify the failed assembly and the evidence supporting that conclusion before anyone orders a replacement.

Do not authorize a motor replacement solely from a dashboard warning. BMW diagnostic software, insulation testing and physical inspection are normally needed to separate a high-voltage, inverter, sensor, cooling or mechanical problem.

A low-priced used unit is not automatically the cheapest installed solution. Freight, a refundable core charge, seals, coolant, programming, alignment and diagnosis can materially increase the final invoice. Ask for a written “out-the-door” estimate that separates each item.
EME and inverter repair costs
The i3’s EME (electromotive electronics) module integrates power electronics that control the motor. It can fail while the mechanical drive unit remains usable. Published estimates put the choices at:

EME prices should never be compared with drive-unit prices as if they were interchangeable parts. The diagnostic report must identify the failed component, and the replacement normally requires BMW software programming and calibration.

What should a repair quote include?
Two shops can quote very different totals because one includes only the component while the other includes the complete high-voltage procedure. Require these line items in writing:
- Initial fault-code scan, test plan and confirmation of the failed component.
- High-voltage shutdown, isolation verification and safety inspection.
- Removal and installation of the drive unit or EME.
- Coolant draining, refilling and bleeding where the repair opens the thermal circuit.
- New seals, one-time-use fasteners and other required installation hardware.
- BMW software programming, coding, calibration and post-repair fault clearing.
- Wheel alignment or subframe checks if suspension or mounting points are disturbed.
- Shipping, core charge, taxes and disposal fees.
- Separate parts and labor warranty terms, including whether used or remanufactured components are covered for consequential damage.
Compatibility checks for a used or remanufactured unit
Drive units and EME modules that look similar may not be plug-and-play. Before payment, have the installer confirm:
- Exact model year and production period.
- i3 BEV or Range Extender configuration.
- Part number, connector layout and revision level.
- Gearbox and final-drive compatibility.
- Software version, coding requirements and whether the donor vehicle’s data can be cleared or adapted.
- Cooling connections and mounting points.
- Whether the component has been tested for insulation resistance and functional operation.
- Return, core and warranty conditions if the part cannot be programmed or proves defective.
Does the BMW battery warranty cover the electric motor?
Usually, you must read the warranty language for your market and component. BMW USA states that every BMW electric car has an 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty for defects in the high-voltage traction battery. For 2026 battery-electric models, BMW also describes protection if battery state of health falls below 70% during that period. Those statements concern the high-voltage battery; they do not automatically promise coverage for a failed motor, inverter or EME.

BMW Certified vehicle rules can add model-year and delivery-date conditions. An authorized center can diagnose, update software and repair or replace necessary covered high-voltage battery components at no cost when the claim meets the applicable terms.
Other markets use different limits. BMW China’s published table lists, for specified production periods, 8 years/160,000 km for the high-voltage battery and 8 years/120,000 km for the drive motor and electronic-control unit. BMW UK separately describes up to eight years/100,000 miles for high-voltage battery defects or excessive capacity loss. These figures are market-specific and should not be transplanted to a vehicle sold elsewhere.

How to check coverage before paying
- Record the VIN, in-service date, model year, market of first sale and whether the car is BEV or Range Extender.
- Ask an authorized BMW center to check open campaigns, warranty history and component-specific coverage by VIN.
- Request the diagnosis in writing, including fault codes, test results and the exact failed part.
- Ask whether the proposed repair is covered as a battery, drive-motor, EME, software or campaign claim.
- Confirm deductibles, exclusions, towing rules and whether a replacement part carries a new warranty period or only the remaining vehicle coverage.
Can an independent EV specialist work on a BMW high-voltage system?
Yes, an independent shop can be a sensible option when it has technicians trained for high-voltage EV work, BMW-capable diagnostic equipment and documented isolation procedures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a qualified technician with specialized EV-specific high-voltage training should service an electric vehicle. This is a safety requirement, not merely a preference for preserving warranty value.
Questions to ask an independent shop
- Which high-voltage certifications and BMW diagnostic systems do the technicians hold?
- How is the battery pack isolated, and how is zero voltage verified before work begins?
- Can the shop perform insulation-resistance testing and BMW programming after installation?
- Will it provide a written diagnosis and a parts-and-labor warranty?
- Has it repaired the specific i3 drive unit or EME revision before?
- Does the estimate include coolant service, calibration, alignment, shipping and any core charge?
A general repair garage without EV-rated equipment should not open a high-voltage enclosure or substitute ordinary electrical procedures for the manufacturer’s isolation process. Do not attempt a motor or EME replacement at home.
Repair, replace the module, or replace the car?
Use the confirmed failed component, installed cost and remaining vehicle value—not the lowest advertised parts price—to make the decision.

A practical decision sequence
- Stop driving for serious warnings. If the car reports propulsion failure, insulation fault, overheating, smoke, coolant leakage near high-voltage components or a high-voltage safety fault, park safely and arrange transport.
- Get an independent second diagnosis. Compare an authorized BMW report with a qualified EV specialist’s findings when the proposed repair is expensive.
- Verify coverage by VIN. Do not assume a battery warranty covers the motor or EME.
- Calculate installed totals. Add diagnosis, isolation, labor, programming, coolant, shipping, taxes, core charges and alignment.
- Compare warranty length and vehicle value. A cheaper used unit with a short warranty may be poor value if removal and installation must be repeated.
- Approve only a documented plan. The work order should name the exact component, compatibility checks, programming procedure and parts/labor warranty.
Symptoms that need immediate attention
- Red drivetrain or high-voltage warning that remains after a restart.
- Sudden loss of propulsion, repeated reduced-power mode or inability to select drive.
- New grinding, metallic whine, rhythmic vibration or clunking under acceleration or regeneration.
- High-voltage isolation, battery over-temperature or coolant warnings.
- Burning odor, smoke, visible coolant near electrical components or evidence of impact damage.
Do not clear warnings repeatedly and continue driving to “see whether they return.” Intermittent faults can become more expensive and can complicate a later warranty diagnosis.
Bottom line for BMW owners
Plan around the failed component, not a generic “motor replacement” label. An i3 drive unit is often cited at roughly 200,000 km, but no BMW-wide lifespan guarantee exists. Published i3 estimates range from hundreds of dollars for a used EME or drive unit to more than $14,000 for a new assembly, before labor. Verify market-specific warranty terms by VIN, use an EV-trained technician, and obtain a complete installed-cost and warranty comparison before choosing repair, used, remanufactured, new or vehicle replacement.
