The BMW E38 7 Series can be an excellent long-distance car, but age, configuration and maintenance history matter more than the badge. The most important checks are the cooling system, fluid leaks, front steering and suspension, instrument displays, electrical equipment, and proof that recalls and scheduled work were completed. Treat each symptom as a diagnostic clue rather than proof that one specific part has failed.
This guide applies to E38 cars broadly, including the 728i, 740i/740iL and 750iL, but equipment and failure points vary by model year, engine, production date and market. Confirm parts, procedures and recall status by VIN.

Cooling-system problems deserve the first inspection
Cooling-system failure can turn a usable E38 into an engine-damage project, so inspect it before cosmetic details. Buyer guides identify the radiator, expansion tank, hoses, fan and other cooling parts as recurring check points. Look for dried coolant residue, staining, damp seams, soft or swollen hoses, cracked plastic, a fan that does not engage when required, and a temperature gauge that behaves abnormally. A pressure test and a cold-start inspection by a BMW-competent technician are more informative than judging the reservoir by appearance alone.
Why year and engine change the cooling-system checklist
The system is not identical across the production run. BMW service information for the 1999 model year describes a revised radiator and expansion tank, a transmission-fluid heat exchanger, a DML-controlled thermostat and an auxiliary fan. The historical system description for a 2000 740iL with the M62 TU engine also shows why parts and procedures must be matched to the car rather than ordered from a generic E38 list: BMW’s service-manual description identifies the equipment for that specific application.
Before buying a radiator, thermostat, expansion tank or hose, confirm the VIN, engine (M52, M60, M62, M62 TU or M73), transmission and market specification. A part that fits one E38 can be wrong for another.

When a low-coolant warning appears after filling
A warning after topping up does not automatically identify a failed expansion tank or a head-gasket problem. BMW technical information describes specified M52 and M62 cases in which incomplete bleeding or residual air after filling can affect the coolant-level indication. Read the procedures for the engine fitted to the car: the M52 low-coolant bulletin and the M62 expansion-tank bulletin are engine-specific references.
Residual air is not a reason to ignore a recurring warning. If the level falls again, the system still needs a leak inspection, correct bleeding and verification that the sensor and cap are functioning.
Cooling-fan recall: how to check it
BMW Service Information Bulletin 64 07 01, dated June 1, 2002, concerns Recall Campaign 01V-206, “Engine Auxiliary/Cooling Fan.” It identifies certain E38 7 Series vehicles produced from November 1, 2000 through July 27, 2001. The production range alone does not prove that an individual car was included or that the repair remains outstanding. Check the VIN with BMW or the relevant national recall authority, and ask for a repair record. The bulletin is available at BMW Service Information Bulletin 64 07 01.

Why an E38 leak near the transmission may come from the engine valley
Fluid at the bottom of the transmission bellhousing is an exit point, not necessarily the source. BMW Product Engineering’s April 1998 bulletin 11 04 98 covers M60 and M62 engines and explains that oil or coolant from the engine valley can run rearward and emerge through rear block weep holes. That path can look like a rear main-seal or rear coolant-channel-cover leak.
“If an engine oil or coolant leak is detected at the bottom of the transmission bell housing area, the center sound absorbing engine cover should be removed first to inspect the engine valley for signs of fluid leaks.”

Follow that diagnostic order before authorizing transmission removal. Inspect the valley, clean the area, identify the fluid and confirm the source while the engine is running or after a controlled road test. The complete bulletin is at BMW’s oil/coolant leak diagnostic bulletin.
Practical leak-tracing sequence
- Record whether the fluid is engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid or water from air-conditioning drainage.
- Inspect the highest wet area first, including the engine valley and hoses, rather than starting at the lowest drip.
- Remove the center sound-absorbing engine cover where access permits and look for fresh fluid in the valley.
- Clean old residue, run the engine to operating temperature and recheck for a new trail.
- Only after the source is confirmed should you choose a gasket, cover, hose or seal repair.
Shimmy, vibration and braking: inspect the whole front end
E38 guides associate steering or suspension wear with shimmy, including vibration that becomes noticeable under braking. The symptom is a cue for diagnosis, not proof that one particular arm, bushing or wheel is defective. A heavy front end places significant load on components, and more than one worn part can produce a similar sensation.

During a pre-purchase inspection, ask the technician to lift the car safely, check for play, inspect bushings and joints, examine tires and wheels, and road-test it at the speed where the symptom occurs. Test every pixel, switch and installed feature
Missing pixels in the instrument cluster or onboard monitor are common inspection flags in E38 buying guidance. Turn on the ignition and confirm that warning lamps, odometer information, outside-temperature data, radio or navigation text and climate-control displays are legible across their full width. Operate buttons and knobs rather than assuming a dark segment is only a viewing-angle problem.
Also test every feature fitted to that car: windows, mirrors, central locking, seat adjustments and heating, sunroof, wipers, lighting, audio, climate control, parking sensors and dashboard switches. Record exactly what fails. A missing display segment and a non-functioning control may have different causes, and the available evidence does not justify promising one repair method or a standard repair cost.
Use configuration and records to set priorities
An E38’s production year, engine, body length, transmission, options and market specification change the parts and service information that apply. BMW’s owner-manual index lists separate E38 editions for 1998/1999, 2000 and 2001 and notes that the collection is for US-specification vehicles. Match the manual to the car’s year and market at the E38 owner-manual index; US manuals can differ in safety and emissions content from other markets.
Records to request from a seller
- VIN and production date, plus the exact engine and transmission.
- Cooling-system work, including radiator, expansion tank, hoses, thermostat, fan and bleeding.
- Oil, coolant and transmission-leak diagnoses that identify the source rather than only the drip location.
- Steering, suspension, brake and alignment invoices, with dates and mileage.
- Instrument-cluster or onboard-monitor repairs and records for other electrical equipment.
- Recall documentation, especially confirmation of the auxiliary/cooling-fan campaign where applicable.
- Inspection reports that distinguish observed symptoms from confirmed failed parts.
Missing records do not prove neglect, but they increase the value of an independent inspection and reduce confidence in claims that a repair was completed.
Pre-purchase inspection checklist
- Verify identity: match the VIN, production date, engine, market and equipment against the records and manual edition.
- Start cold: look for warning lights, unstable temperature behavior, unusual fan operation and visible leaks.
- Inspect cooling parts: examine the radiator, expansion tank, hoses, thermostat area, fan and cap for residue or damage.
- Check coolant level correctly: use the engine-specific filling and bleeding procedure; investigate any repeated warning.
- Trace fluid leaks: inspect the engine valley before blaming a bellhousing seal or removing the transmission.
- Road-test the front end: note shimmy by speed, braking and road surface, then have a technician check for play.
- Exercise displays and equipment: test every pixel, switch and installed electrical function.
- Confirm recalls: check the VIN with BMW or the national recall authority and obtain documentation.
- Price only confirmed work: get a written diagnosis and parts fitment check before treating a symptom as a repair estimate.
How owners should prioritize repairs
Address overheating risk, active coolant loss and unsafe steering or braking symptoms before comfort or cosmetic faults. A display with missing pixels is worth documenting, but it should not take precedence over a cooling leak or loose front-end component. For any part, verify fitment by VIN, model year, engine, production date and market; there is no universal E38 repair kit supported for every configuration.

Buy or keep an E38 on the strength of its documented condition: verify the cooling system and recall status, trace leaks from their source, diagnose shimmy with a full front-end inspection, and test every display and electrical feature before committing to the car.
