The BMW E36 is the third-generation 3 Series, produced from July 1990 through August 2000. It came in five main body styles—Sedan, Coupe, Convertible, Compact hatchback and Touring—but each arrived at a different time, and the full generation span does not apply to every version.
What years were BMW E36s made?
BMW Group Classic records overall E36 production from July 1990 to August 2000. BMW’s 2025 history also describes the generation as running from 1990 to 2000. These are generation-wide dates, not a model-year range that applies identically to every body style or country.
The Sedan began the generation. BMW Group Classic lists its production separately as July 1990 through November 1998, illustrating why a specific E36’s body style matters when checking dates. BMW Group Classic’s E36 Sedan record and BMW’s E36 generation overview provide the historical context.
Which E36 body styles were there?
The E36 was offered in five principal body forms. BMW’s historical timeline places their introduction across several years:

| Body style | Arrival in BMW’s E36 history | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | 1990 | The generation’s original body style; BMW says it was the highest-selling E36 form. |
| Coupe | 1992 | A distinct coupe variant followed the 1990 saloon. |
| Convertible | 1993 | BMW dates the convertible’s arrival to 1993. |
| Compact | 1994 | A shortened hatchback; the E36 was the first 3 Series generation to include this type. |
| Touring | 1995 | The estate body returned to the 3 Series range; BMW Group Classic specifies a spring 1995 launch. |
The arrival dates describe BMW’s generation history, not a guarantee that every body style or engine was sold in every market. BMW’s 2025 3 Series retrospective covers the generation and its body-style milestones; BMW Group Classic describes the Touring as the fifth E36 body version in its E36 archive material.
