The redesigned gas-powered 2025 Chevrolet Equinox makes a substantial visual and technology leap, but it remains a comfortable, predictable compact SUV rather than a quick or trail-ready one. Its upright new look, larger screens, three distinct trims and broad standard driver-assistance suite make the redesign meaningful; the 175-hp engine is adequate, not exhilarating.
What changed for 2025?
This is the fourth-generation gasoline Equinox, not the separate Equinox EV. Chevrolet announced the redesigned model on January 23, 2024, with LT and RS trims plus the first-ever ACTIV. The new bodylines and more upright proportions draw on Chevrolet’s truck design language, giving the compact SUV a more assertive look than its predecessor.
The cabin’s most obvious update is a pair of large screens: an 11-inch configurable driver information display and an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Chevrolet says the infotainment display is more than 30% larger than the largest screen in the prior model. Google built-in functions depend on system, location and account conditions; some connected services require an account link or selected service plan.
Which trim fits which buyer?

Chevrolet’s design statements describe the intent rather than independent road-test findings. Scott Bell, Chevrolet vice president, said the bodylines and proportions were “inspired by our brand’s truck DNA.”

How does the Equinox drive?
Every 2025 gas Equinox uses a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder rated by Chevrolet at 175 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. Front-wheel-drive models pair it with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and produce 184 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic and produce 203 lb-ft.
First-drive reviewers describe the Equinox as comfortable, stable and predictable. The Drive found the powertrain adequate and the brakes appropriately calibrated, while noting that the reviewer wanted more power; it also preferred the CVT’s behavior to the AWD model’s eight-speed during its drive. Car and Driver likewise describes a competent, comfortable chassis, but cautions against expecting sporty responses. These are short-term driving impressions, not long-term reliability or ownership findings.

How much room and towing capacity does it offer?
The Drive’s 2024 review specification table lists 29.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 63.5 cubic feet with the second row folded. Chevrolet says available AWD enables towing up to 1,500 pounds. That manufacturer figure is subject to the owner’s-manual guidance, and passengers, cargo and options affect the vehicle’s capacity.
Is the ACTIV actually off-road capable?
ACTIV is best understood as the style-forward, light-duty-surface-road trim, not a dedicated trail SUV. Its all-terrain tires and rugged fascias distinguish its appearance, but they do not establish serious off-road hardware. MotorTrend’s brief dirt-road drive was not enough to determine the full extent of the tuning; it noted that the mode permits more wheel slip on shallow loose surfaces. Car and Driver reports no suspension lift or underbody protection and describes AWD’s Off-Road mode as relaxing traction and stability intervention.

That evidence supports considering ACTIV for gravel roads and occasional light-duty use, not assuming it is prepared for demanding trails.
What safety equipment and crash results are documented?
Chevrolet lists Chevy Safety Assist as standard, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam. Chevrolet’s launch announcement also lists standard Side Bicyclist Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Rear Park Assist and Enhanced Lane Keep Assist. Driver-assistance systems have operating limits and do not replace an attentive driver.

Published launch-era prices differ by publication date and convention, so they should not be treated as today’s offers. MotorTrend’s 2024 first-drive report listed $29,995 for LT FWD and $34,395 for RS and ACTIV FWD, with AWD adding $2,000. Car and Driver’s October 17, 2024 update listed $31,080 for LT and $35,480 for RS and ACTIV; its tested RS AWD was $36,395 base and $40,420 as tested. Check current MSRP, destination, packages and dealer terms before comparing vehicles.
Is the redesigned Equinox a meaningful upgrade?
Yes, if what you want is a compact daily driver with fresher styling, a much more prominent screen setup, more clearly differentiated trims and an extensive set of standard driver-assistance features. The changes are substantial in presentation and cabin technology. The driving character remains comfort-first, and the engine’s modest output means buyers seeking brisk acceleration or genuine trail capability should look beyond the Equinox—or test the exact trim and drivetrain they are considering.
