BMW did not abandon subscriptions altogether. Instead, the company backed away from treating a static comfort feature like an ongoing digital service. BMW continues to offer paid ConnectedDrive and BMW Digital Premium services in eligible vehicles and markets, including some entertainment, navigation, personalization, and connected-car functions.

In 2022, BMW ConnectedDrive Store listings in selected countries allowed owners of compatible vehicles to activate heated front seats and heated steering wheels after delivery. The relevant physical components could already be fitted during vehicle production, while software or an online purchase controlled whether the owner could use them.

Contemporary UK reports listed prices of approximately £15 per month for heated front seats and £10 per month for a heated steering wheel. Reports from South Korea described seat heating at roughly $18 per month. Those were market-specific reports, not a universal BMW price, and eligibility depended on the vehicle, equipment, production date, software, and country.
The arrangement was often summarized online as BMW “charging a subscription for heated seats.” That description captures the controversy, but it can also create the wrong impression. BMW did not remove heated-seat hardware from every vehicle and then bill every owner to restore it. The system applied only to certain technically prepared vehicles in participating markets.
BMW ended the heated-seat subscription in September 2023
On September 7, 2023, BMW board member Pieter Nota said the company would no longer offer seat heating through the monthly-subscription model. Reporting on the announcement attributed the reversal to low customer acceptance and to the perception that drivers were paying twice: once for the vehicle and its physical components, and again for permission to use the feature.

The decision was a retreat from one pricing model, not a promise that every BMW would receive heated seats as standard equipment.
The important U.S. qualification
For U.S. readers, the geography matters. The widely reported heated-seat subscription was associated with markets such as the UK and South Korea. BMW of North America said heated-seat options were commonly ordered with U.S.-market vehicles and did not expect U.S. factory-option purchasing patterns to change materially.

BMW also described U.S. Functions on Demand as primarily a digital aftersales mechanism. It said that program would not change options ordered at the time of purchase. Therefore, it is inaccurate to say that BMW charged every American owner a monthly fee for heated seats.
The accurate version in one sentence
BMW tested recurring payments for heated-seat activation in selected markets, encountered poor acceptance, and discontinued that approach in 2023; it did not impose a universal U.S. heated-seat subscription.
Why the idea generated so much backlash
The objection was less about the absolute monthly amount than about what the payment appeared to represent. A subscription can feel understandable when it pays for continuing infrastructure: cellular connectivity, cloud processing, live traffic data, streaming content, map updates, customer support, or a service that is continuously improved.
Heated seats looked different. From the owner’s perspective, the seat elements, wiring, switches, and other necessary hardware were already in the car. Turning them on appeared to require no continuing content or network service. The monthly payment therefore looked like a software lock placed over a physical capability that the customer had already helped purchase.
That led to the most damaging perception: paying twice. Even if BMW had legitimate production, software, warranty, or support costs, those costs were not obvious to many customers. The feature felt like part of the physical product rather than a service being delivered over time.

Why BMW still believes some subscriptions can work
The heated-seat reversal should not be interpreted as BMW abandoning all paid vehicle features. BMW continues to use ConnectedDrive as a platform for digital services and on-demand functions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →BMW’s current UK materials describe BMW Digital Premium as an optional monthly or annual subscription for compatible vehicles. Depending on the market and vehicle, the package can include entertainment, selected apps, expanded navigation features, personalization, and related digital functionality. BMW’s U.S. materials also describe subscription-dependent connected features such as certain smart-interior rules, additional My Modes, connected charging, connected music, entertainment, and third-party apps.
Availability is not universal. BMW says ConnectedDrive functions can vary according to country, model, vehicle specification, equipment, software, production date, and account. A service shown for one BMW or market may not be available for another.
| Feature type | How customers may perceive the payment | Why the model may be easier—or harder—to justify |
|---|---|---|
| Heated seats or a heated steering wheel | A recurring fee to unlock hardware already in the vehicle | Harder to justify because the capability appears static and physical |
| Live traffic, cloud services, or connected charging | Payment for continuing data, servers, and communications | Easier to understand because the service has ongoing operating costs |
| Entertainment and third-party apps | Payment for content or access that can change over time | More familiar subscription logic, although value and availability still vary |
| Driver assistance or other software functions | Payment for a capability delivered or updated through software | Potentially acceptable to some owners, but dependent on pricing, reliability, and whether the feature was expected to be included |
This suggests a narrower lesson rather than a universal rule: consumers may be more receptive to paying for continuing software, content, data, or connected services than to paying repeatedly for a physical comfort feature. That is an interpretation of the customer response and BMW’s subsequent product direction—not proof that all automotive subscriptions are unpopular or that every digital subscription is good value.
BMW’s heated-seat subscription timeline

- July 2022: BMW clarified that the U.S. was not part of the heated-seat subscription rollout and separately described U.S. Functions on Demand as a digital aftersales program.
- September 7, 2023: BMW executive Pieter Nota said the company would stop offering seat heating through the monthly-subscription approach, citing poor customer acceptance and the perception that customers were paying twice.
- September 8–13, 2023: Follow-up reporting described a return to conventional optional-equipment treatment for heated seats and heated steering wheels.
- 2024–2026: BMW continued to market ConnectedDrive and BMW Digital Premium services, showing that the company had targeted the heated-seat model rather than rejected paid digital services generally.
What this means if you own or are shopping for a BMW
If you are buying a new BMW
Check the vehicle’s build sheet and the options displayed for your exact country and model. Do not assume that a heated-seat feature, a BMW Digital Premium function, or any ConnectedDrive service is included simply because it appears in a brochure, online configurator, or another market’s vehicle listing.

Ask the retailer to distinguish between:
- a feature installed and enabled as factory equipment;
- hardware installed but activated through a one-time purchase;
- a trial or temporary service;
- a recurring ConnectedDrive or Digital Premium subscription; and
- a feature that is unavailable because the vehicle lacks the required technical preparation.
If you own a used BMW
Check the vehicle’s ConnectedDrive account and the service list for that specific vehicle. Availability can depend on the car’s production date, equipment, software, market, and account, so another owner’s experience is not definitive evidence of what your BMW supports.
Most importantly, do not assume that a subscription shown in an old article is still available, or that a feature can be activated merely because another BMW has the same model name. BMW’s service catalog and terms can change over time.

What BMW did—and did not—reverse
- Reversed: the recurring-subscription treatment of heated seats as a hardware-based feature in the markets where it had been offered.
- Expected replacement: conventional factory equipment or optional-equipment treatment for heated seats and heated steering wheels.
- Not reversed: BMW’s broader ConnectedDrive strategy or every subscription-based digital service.
- Not established: a universal current price, feature list, or availability rule for all BMW vehicles and countries.
Bottom line
BMW’s heated-seat subscription failed because it made a familiar physical comfort feature look like a rental. The company’s own explanation and the reporting around the reversal point to poor acceptance and customer resentment over paying again for hardware already present in the car.

The episode did not end BMW’s interest in subscriptions. It drew a practical boundary: recurring payments are easier to defend when they fund ongoing software, content, data, or connected services. They are much harder to sell when the customer sees the product as already built, already paid for, and merely switched off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did BMW charge every U.S. owner a monthly fee for heated seats?
No. The widely reported heated-seat subscription was offered in selected markets such as the UK and South Korea, not as a broad U.S. rollout. BMW of North America said U.S. heated-seat options were generally handled as vehicle equipment or options ordered with the car.
Can BMW still charge a subscription for heated seats?
BMW stopped offering heated seats through that recurring subscription model in September 2023. The company indicated that heated seats and heated steering wheels would return to conventional factory-option or optional-equipment treatment. Exact availability still depends on the vehicle and market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDid BMW cancel all of its car subscriptions?
No. BMW continues to offer ConnectedDrive and BMW Digital Premium services in eligible markets and vehicles. These can include features involving entertainment, apps, navigation, personalization, connected charging, and other digital services.
Can a heated seat cushion unlock BMW’s built-in heated seats?
Not directly. An aftermarket heated cushion is an independent accessory that draws power separately and does not unlock or repair BMW’s factory-installed system. Check the specific product’s fit, power requirements, instructions, and safety documentation before use.
The Bottom Line
BMW discontinued its monthly heated-seat subscription in September 2023 after poor customer acceptance. The experiment was limited to selected markets, not a universal U.S. policy. BMW continues to offer subscriptions for some ongoing digital and connected services, but the backlash showed how differently customers view software services and locked physical hardware.
