The companies announced expanded cooperation in 2012, formalized a mid-size sports-car project in January 2013, and Toyota later identified the fifth-generation GR Supra as the first product of their comprehensive collaboration. The official record establishes that chronology and outcome; it does not provide a complete account of private negotiations or a detailed division of engineering work.
What did BMW and Toyota agree to in 2012?
In December 2011, the companies began cooperating on next-generation environmental technologies. Toyota’s June 29, 2012 announcement said they would expand that relationship through a long-term strategic collaboration. The announcement covered four areas, only one of which involved a sports vehicle.
- Fuel-cell system development
- Architecture and components for a future sports vehicle
- Powertrain electrification
- Lightweight-technology research
The same announcement distinguished this expanded work from a separate December 2011 diesel-engine supply agreement between BMW and Toyota Motor Europe. That supply arrangement was not the sports-car project. Toyota’s June 29, 2012 announcement
How did the Supra become a BMW collaboration?
On January 24, 2013, Toyota said the companies had reached formal agreements covering four projects: a mid-size sports car, fuel-cell development, lightweight technology, and research into post-lithium-ion batteries. Toyota described the sports-car ambition as a “21st-century mid-size sports car.” That phrase captures the stated target, not a claim that every production component or decision would be jointly designed. The statement was made by Toyota Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada; its English wording is a translation of his Japanese speech. Toyota’s January 24, 2013 account

That agreement is the documented link between the broader partnership and the later Supra. Toyota’s May 2019 launch announcement called the fifth-generation Supra the first product of its comprehensive collaboration with BMW. It also said the car was produced at Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria. Toyota’s May 17, 2019 launch announcement
What is established—and what remains unknown?
Toyota’s official announcements establish the partnership’s sequence, its announced work areas, the mid-size sports-car target, and the Supra’s status as the first production product of the comprehensive collaboration. They do not supply a full engineering ledger or explain the private negotiation process.

- The cited announcements do not specify a complete allocation of engineering responsibilities between BMW and Toyota.
- They do not establish, component by component, what was shared or independently developed for production.
- They do not support reducing the GR Supra to a “rebadged Z4” or assigning particular engines, transmissions, chassis components, or software to one partner.
Those limits matter: a documented collaboration does not, by itself, reveal how every design and development decision was divided. A more detailed account would require evidence beyond the official announcements cited here.

The collaboration did not erase the Supra’s Toyota lineage. Toyota dates the model’s origins to 1978 and says production of the previous generation ended in 2002. The fifth generation premiered at the Detroit auto show on January 14, 2019; Toyota described its return as following a 17-year hiatus. Those dates and the hiatus figure are Toyota’s own historical account. Toyota’s January 14, 2019 debut announcement Toyota’s Supra heritage account

The 2014 FT-1 concept supplied design context: Toyota says its Calty design studio created the concept and describes it as a stimulus for the production Supra’s design direction, with inspiration from earlier Toyota sports cars. That account does not establish that all production engineering began in 2014. At the 2019 debut, chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said the aim was “to create a pure sports car that would attain the ultimate in the fun of driving.”
