BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology makes its production debut in the all-electric iX3 50 xDrive, the first series-production Neue Klasse model. It is a vehicle-wide redesign, not just a new motor: BMW combines an 800-volt electrical architecture, a high-voltage battery built around cylindrical cells, and two new motors. The figures available at launch are BMW’s claims and preliminary estimates, not independent road-test results.
What is BMW Gen6 eDrive?
BMW Gen6 eDrive is the company’s sixth-generation electric-drive system, developed for its Neue Klasse vehicles. BMW describes it as a combination of electric motors, a new high-voltage battery using cylindrical cells, and 800V technology. The change in battery format is part of the system redesign: BMW says the new cylindrical cells have around 20% higher energy density than the prismatic cells it previously used. That is a BMW comparison, and the overview does not state a year for that specific figure.

How the iX3 50 xDrive powertrain is arranged
The iX3 50 xDrive uses two motors for electric all-wheel drive. At the rear is an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM); at the front is an asynchronous motor (ASM). BMW lists 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm (475 lb-ft) for the global iX3 50 xDrive. These are manufacturer-published launch specifications, not independently measured output. What BMW says improved over Gen5
For Neue Klasse Gen6 drive technology compared with BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive, BMW claims 40% lower energy losses, 10% lower weight, and 20% lower manufacturing costs. These are BMW’s comparative figures; the launch materials do not provide independent validation or a common on-road test showing the resulting improvement in a finished vehicle.

The distinction matters because the architecture combines motors, battery cells, packaging, and control electronics. A claim about component-level energy losses or manufacturing costs does not, by itself, establish a particular real-world range or ownership-cost improvement.

BMW published different range figures for different markets and test bases. The global launch kit gives provisional WLTP figures for the iX3 50 xDrive: a combined range band of 679–805 km (422–500 miles), with combined energy consumption of 17.9–15.1 kWh/100 km. BMW’s September 2025 US announcement estimated up to 400 miles of range based on preliminary BMW AG testing using EPA test procedure standards. BMW says the iX3 can reach a peak charging power of 400 kW and add up to 372 km (231 miles) of range in ten minutes in the global launch materials. Its US summary gives about 175 miles in ten minutes. These are manufacturer claims, not a promise that every charging session will achieve that rate or add the same range.

Peak power is not a typical charge curve: the launch material cited here does not establish how long the vehicle sustains peak power or what a representative session delivers. Launch timing announced by BMW
In its 5 September 2025 announcements, BMW said production was planned to begin at BMW Group Plant Debrecen in the first quarter of 2026. BMW’s global launch materials said the European market launch would begin in spring 2026 and the US launch in summer 2026; the US release expected deliveries in mid-2026. What the launch figures do—and do not—establish
BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse called Neue Klasse the company’s “biggest future project” and said its technologies would benefit the broader product range. That is BMW’s characterization of the program, not independent evidence that every announced performance or efficiency target will be achieved in production vehicles.
The launch materials establish what BMW announced about Gen6 and the iX3 50 xDrive. They do not establish independently tested range, typical charging performance, final homologated figures, or current delivery status. Those questions require later vehicle-specific data or testing.
