You can’t order a new BMW M3 CRT because BMW built it as a limited 2011 run of just 67 cars. CRT stands for Carbon Racing Technology: it was a road-approved E90-generation M3 Sedan with a modified 4.4-liter V8 and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts—not a complete carbon-fibre body. Today, finding one means looking for a surviving collector car.
Why can’t you buy a BMW M3 CRT new?
The M3 CRT was a finite special edition, not a model BMW continues to build or offer for factory order. BMW M’s retrospective calls it a special edition limited to 67 units and says its small production number made it hard to find even at launch. Production has long since ended, so a new-car purchase is not an option; a used example may occasionally come onto the collector market.
BMW M reported that one car sold at RM Sotheby’s Munich auction in summer 2025 for just under €260,000. That is one reported auction result, not a current asking price, market average, or indication that another car is available. Condition and the scarcity of surviving examples matter.
What does CRT mean, and what was it?
CRT means Carbon Racing Technology. BMW introduced the model in 2011 as a racing-inspired, road-approved version of the E90-generation M3 Sedan. It was built around a four-door sedan body and retained individual rear seats, distinguishing it from the two-seat, track-focused M3 GTS described in BMW’s period material.

The “carbon-bodied” shorthand can be misleading: the CRT was not a car with an all-carbon-fibre body shell. Its CFRP construction was used for specific components, including the bonnet, front bucket seats, front splitter, front air-channeling element, and rear spoiler lip.
What made the CRT unusually light?
CFRP bonnet and seats
BMW says the CRT’s bonnet used a then-new CFRP process and was about 50 percent lighter than the standard M3 Sedan’s aluminum bonnet. The front bucket seats used a cellular carbon-honeycomb construction. BMW says the components achieved the strength of conventional steel parts at around one quarter the weight.

BMW’s weight figures
BMW M lists a kerb weight of 1,580 kg. Despite the CRT’s extensive standard equipment, BMW says this was around 45 kg less than a standard M3 Sedan; without that equipment, the reduction would have been as much as 70 kg. These are BMW-published figures and comparisons, not independently measured results.
Engine, performance, and chassis
The CRT’s modified 4.4-liter V8 produced 331 kW (450 hp), with BMW listing an engine speed of up to 8,300 rpm. BMW gives a 0–100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 290 km/h.

Its equipment included a seven-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, a titanium rear silencer, adjustable coilover suspension, and a rear subframe bolted rigidly to the body. BMW says the subframe arrangement improved structural stiffness, steering response, and feedback. The braking system used six-piston high-performance compound brakes.

Can you still buy an M3 CRT?
It is possible to buy a used CRT if an owner offers one for sale, but BMW’s limited 67-car production means availability is inherently scarce. The reported 2025 auction result offers context for one transaction only; it does not establish what a particular car should cost. Anyone considering a purchase would need to assess the individual car’s condition, provenance, and documentation, and arrange valuation and insurance appropriate to a rare collector vehicle.
