Which new cars are selling over MSRP?
Consumer Reports based its list on TrueCar data and focused on vehicles that consistently sold above MSRP nationally, rather than isolated high-demand trims. The listed percentages are national reported premiums; they are not exact dollar markups and do not mean every trim or local dealer is charging the same amount.

Should you pay over MSRP?
Consumer Reports says its list does not factor in the publication’s vehicle recommendations and states: “Keep in mind that this list doesn’t factor in Consumer Reports’ recommendations, nor do we endorse paying such premiums for a new car.” A high price relative to MSRP is a pricing signal, not evidence that a vehicle is a good choice or worth the premium.

Compare the exact vehicle and local offers
Ask for an itemized out-the-door quote for the precise trim and configuration you want. Compare local offers for the same vehicle, separating the vehicle price from taxes, registration, and optional dealer add-ons. A national average cannot tell you whether one particular dealer’s quote is competitive in your area.
Check alternatives and timing
CR describes a mixed market: some vehicles have manufacturer incentives while certain hybrids, trucks, special-edition sports cars, and some front-wheel-drive SUVs may sell above sticker. If your needs allow, compare a suitable, more available alternative and check whether it has incentives. The report also warns that 2027 models are coming out soon; model-year arrivals can change availability and pricing, so treat its figures as a snapshot rather than a standing forecast.
