No—not in the reported quotation. Hyundai CEO José Muñoz said the company wants to be competitive as a mass-market brand and use its capacity to gain economies of scale. The report does not quote him saying Hyundai cannot match Chinese EV prices. His remarks describe Hyundai’s intended position, not proof that it already has a cost advantage.
What did Hyundai’s CEO actually say?
In an interview in New York on October 1, 2026, on the sidelines of the new Tucson’s world premiere, Muñoz discussed Hyundai’s positioning as Chinese EV competition intensifies. Korea JoongAng Daily published the report on October 2. It quoted him saying: “In the mid to long term, we want to be competitive. We don’t want to be premium. And we are a mass market [brand],” and that Hyundai wanted “to be able to have economies of scale” by using its available capacity. (Korea JoongAng Daily)
Those words are not an admission that Hyundai cannot compete on price. They state an ambition to compete as a mass-market manufacturer. Economies of scale can support lower costs when capacity is used efficiently, but the interview quotation does not establish Hyundai’s current costs, prices, or ability to match a particular Chinese model.
Why the distinction matters
“Can’t compete on price” is a stronger claim than the evidence supports. A fair price comparison needs vehicles sold in the same market and segment at the same time, with local taxes and incentives included. It should also account for equipment, battery and range, charging, software, after-sales support, and local production and supply chains. The cited reporting does not provide a matched Hyundai-versus-Chinese-EV price comparison or a numerical price gap.

Sales performance is relevant context, but it cannot fill that gap. The Korea Times reported Beijing Hyundai sales of around 180,000 vehicles in China in 2024, compared with more than one million Hyundai sales in China in 2016. It also reported China Passenger Car Association figures of 221 Elexio sales in November and 228 in December, in the period discussed in its article. The publication described the model as having made little impact and cited unclear commercial positioning as a challenge. Those figures concern sales—not comparative prices—and the Beijing Hyundai figures should not be conflated with Hyundai Motor Company’s global results. (The Korea Times)
Hyundai’s response: more China-focused products and greater scale
China product plans
In April 2026, Hyundai said it planned to launch 20 new models in China over five years and introduced IONIQ V as its first dedicated IONIQ production model for that market. The announcement framed its approach as “In China, For China, To Global.” These are company plans and positioning, not evidence that the new lineup has already won customers or closed a price gap. Global sales and electrification targets
In August 2026, Hyundai reaffirmed a target of 5.55 million global vehicle sales by 2030. It said electrified vehicles accounted for 23% of its 2025 sales mix and set a target of 60% by 2030, alongside more than 100 vehicle launches or refreshes by that year. Each figure is a company-reported baseline or future target, not a realized result. Hyundai’s breadth and scale could support its competitive strategy, but targets alone do not show how competitively any particular EV is priced. (Hyundai Motor Company)
Earlier cost-focused plans—and what they prove
Hyundai’s 2024 strategy announcement described an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) approach that could reduce battery capacity relative to a full EV, and discussed a planned economical C-segment platform for China. That shows cost-conscious electrification and China-specific product development were part of its earlier plans. It does not establish that the platform or a particular EREV is currently available, or quantify savings against Chinese rivals. (Hyundai Motor Company)

What to conclude about the price competition
The defensible reading is that Hyundai sees mass-market competitiveness and economies of scale as central to its response to Chinese rivals. Its China roadmap and global targets indicate the scale and product breadth it intends to pursue; the reported China sales figures show the market has been difficult for its local operation. But the available statements and figures do not establish that Hyundai admitted it cannot compete on price, nor do they tell buyers whether a Hyundai EV costs more than a comparable Chinese model in a specific market.
