BMW marked Mercedes-Benz’s 140th anniversary with a quick joke about driving pleasure; Porsche took a more reflective approach, emphasizing shared history and Stuttgart roots. Mercedes-Benz thanked both rivals in public replies, according to an India Today report published on 30 January 2026.
What BMW and Porsche said
The reported tributes appeared on 29 January 2026, the anniversary of Carl Benz’s 1886 patent application for a three-wheeled motor car. India Today transcribed the posts and Mercedes-Benz’s replies; the wording below is attributed to that report.
BMW’s driving-pleasure quip
BMW’s reported message was: “Luckily Carl Benz invented the automobile. So we could invent driving pleasure.” It turned the anniversary into a concise joke about BMW’s own identity: Mercedes-Benz supplied the historical starting point, while BMW claimed its place in the story through the pleasure of driving.
Porsche’s shared-history tribute
Porsche’s reported message was warmer and longer, presenting the companies as connected by place, motorsport and the highs and setbacks of automotive history. Its post began: “Dear Mercedes-Benz, we share more than passion. We share the visionary foundation of our pioneer. We share our hometown. We share the love for motorsports. We share the feeling of winning the greatest races. We share the setbacks. We share the same friends.”

The report also transcribed Porsche’s closing line: “To 140 years of the automobile and many more shared moments.” It mentions the E 500 as a shared reference, but does not establish further detail about the model’s history.
How Mercedes-Benz replied
Mercedes-Benz reportedly thanked Porsche for its kind words and wished for continued innovation, “always striving for the best – in our own unique ways.” Its reply to BMW was more teasing: “Cheers, BMW – 140 years of making history and giving you something to chase. Thanks for the congrats!”

The exchange was a public anniversary greeting between automakers, not an announcement of a joint venture or product collaboration. The contrast is in the tone: BMW’s brief, competitive wink versus Porsche’s emphasis on common roots and shared experiences.
Why 29 January 1886 matters
Carl Benz applied for patent DRP 37435 on 29 January 1886 for a three-wheeled motor car. Mercedes-Benz describes the patent as widely regarded as the automobile’s birth certificate and marked 140 years from that date on 29 January 2026. Mercedes-Benz Group’s history page sets out the company’s account of the patent and its significance.

The anniversary extends beyond social media
Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 anniversary program includes “140 Years. 140 Places,” a planned journey in three S-Class sedans to 140 destinations across six continents. The company says the route will cover more than 50,000 kilometres and is planned to finish in Stuttgart in October 2026. Those are announced campaign plans, not confirmation that the journey has already been completed. Details appear on the Mercedes-Benz Group campaign page and in the Mercedes-Benz USA announcement of 29 January 2026.
The BMW and Porsche wording and replies in this article are based on India Today’s 30 January 2026 transcription, rather than direct verification of the original social posts: “BMW and Porsche tip their hats as Mercedes-Benz turns 140.”
