Mazda describes it as a front-midship sports car, but the available official histories support a high-level account of the engine and its placement—not a component-by-component teardown.
What engine did the first-generation RX-7 have?
Mazda’s first-generation Savanna RX-7, known by enthusiasts as the SA22C generation, used the 12A, a two-rotor rotary engine. Mazda’s corporate history identifies the engine and dates the car’s introduction to March 1978. Mazda USA describes its overview version as a naturally aspirated, 1,146 cc twin-rotor 12A.
The 1,146 cc figure is Mazda USA’s stated specification for the engine in that overview. It should not be read as a directly interchangeable displacement comparison with a piston engine: rotary displacement conventions differ, and the cited overview does not explain the measurement method. How much horsepower did the 12A make?
Mazda’s corporate historical entry gives 130 hp, while Mazda USA lists 101 hp for the naturally aspirated 1,146 cc 12A in its overview. Those figures are source-specific and should not be collapsed into a single universal output rating. The cited pages do not establish the model year, sales market, or rating convention needed to reconcile them.

For a specific car, identify its production year and market, then verify the engine configuration and the convention used for its rating. Mazda’s web histories are undated, so the figures should be attributed to their respective publishers rather than assigned a publication year. Mazda corporate history; Mazda USA overview.
Where was the engine mounted?
Mazda says it installed the 12A in a front-midship layout. The company’s history says this placement enabled the RX-7 to exhibit “outstanding handling stability.” That is Mazda’s retrospective description of the design intent and result; the cited history does not provide weight distribution, center-of-gravity measurements, or comparative test data.

Why did Mazda introduce the RX-7 in 1978?
Mazda’s Japanese history frames the launch against the energy and regulatory pressures of the period. The first oil crisis had passed, another oil shock followed the 1978 Iranian Revolution, and Japan’s 1978 emissions regulation required stringent exhaust purification. Mazda presents the RX-7 as arriving when high-powered cars faced headwinds. This is the company’s historical context, not evidence that any one pressure alone dictated the car’s engineering choices.
Mazda’s corporate history describes the development theme as the “pursuit of driving pleasure.” Together, the company’s accounts place the compact rotary-powered sports car in a period when performance had to be considered alongside fuel and emissions concerns. What an “autopsy” can—and cannot—establish
The official histories establish the 12A’s identity as a two-rotor engine, the broad naturally aspirated configuration described by Mazda USA, Mazda’s stated output figures in their respective contexts, and the front-midship layout. They do not provide an internal engineering drawing, workshop procedure, or teardown evidence.
Consequently, these sources do not establish component dimensions, housing materials, oil-metering details, particular wear patterns, common failure causes, or rebuild instructions. A real mechanical autopsy requires a correctly identified engine and reliable technical documentation or direct inspection; the model-history information alone cannot diagnose an individual RX-7.

What does SA22C mean?
SA22C is the enthusiast designation associated with the first-generation RX-7. Mazda’s Japanese history identifies the first-generation Savanna RX-7 with the SA22C generation. Treat it as a generation/model designation, not as the engine name: the engine discussed here is the 12A.
