The BMW ALPINA B8 Gran Coupé is rated at 621 hp (457 kW) in ALPINA’s international material. BMW’s U.S. launch specification for the 2022 model lists 612 hp. Both figures describe the same 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8, but they are published for different markets and should not be treated as a simple error.
The video associated with this question is ALPINA’s official presentation of the B8 Gran Coupé, published March 30, 2021. Its description uses the 621-hp figure, while BMW Group’s U.S. press information uses 612 hp for the American-market car.

Which car does the 621-horsepower video show?
The vehicle is the BMW ALPINA B8 Gran Coupé, an ALPINA-developed version of BMW’s 8 Series Gran Coupé. “B8” is the model designation; it is not a reference to an eight-cylinder displacement or an eight-speed transmission. The official video is titled “The all new BMW ALPINA B8 Gran Coupé,” and ALPINA’s brochure uses the same model name.

Why one source says 621 hp and another says 612 hp
The apparent conflict comes from the source and market being quoted. ALPINA’s international brochure states that its 4.4-litre V8 with bi-turbo charging produces 457 kW (621 hp). The ALPINA video description repeats 457 kW and labels the output 621 PS/hp. BMW Group’s U.S. press release, dated March 24, 2021, gives the 2022 U.S.-market car 612 hp and 590 lb-ft.
| Source | Market or context | Published power | Published torque | Other listed figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ALPINA B8 brochure | International material | 457 kW (621 hp) | 800 Nm (590 lb-ft), available from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm | 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 |
| ALPINA official video description | Video published March 30, 2021 | 457 kW (621 PS/hp) | 800 Nm | 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds; 324 km/h (201 mph) top speed |
| BMW Group PressClub USA release | 2022 U.S.-market model | 612 hp at 5,500–6,500 rpm | 590 lb-ft at 2,000–5,000 rpm | 0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds; 11.5-second quarter-mile; 201 mph maximum speed |
For a general, international answer to the video headline, 621 hp is the number ALPINA publishes. For a U.S.-specific answer, use BMW’s 612-hp figure and identify it as the American-market specification. The responsible wording is therefore “621 hp internationally, or 612 hp in BMW’s U.S. specification,” rather than claiming that one source must be wrong.
What the B8’s engine figures actually describe
Displacement and forced induction
Both sets of factory material identify a 4.4-liter (4.4-litre) V8 using bi-turbo charging. “Bi-turbo” indicates two turbochargers are used to force more air into the engine than atmospheric pressure alone would provide. The figures are output ratings, not a claim that the engine produces the same power at every engine speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPower in kilowatts and horsepower
ALPINA presents the international rating as 457 kW and 621 hp. Kilowatts are the SI unit of power, while horsepower is the unit most readers see in automotive specifications. The brochure’s paired values let you identify the same rating regardless of which unit a website or registration document uses.
The video description writes “621 PS/hp.” PS is metric horsepower, historically associated with the German Pferdestärke unit, while U.S. specifications commonly use mechanical horsepower. Manufacturers sometimes label the metric value simply as “hp” in consumer material. That labeling convention is one reason a brochure, video and regional press release can display slightly different numbers without implying a different engine family.

Torque and the useful engine-speed range
ALPINA lists 800 Nm, equivalent to 590 lb-ft, with maximum torque available from 2,000 through 5,000 rpm. BMW’s U.S. document gives the same 590 lb-ft torque value and the same 2,000–5,000-rpm band. Torque describes twisting force; the stated range tells you where the engine is certified to deliver its peak value, not the complete shape of its torque curve outside that range.
How quick is the BMW ALPINA B8?
ALPINA’s video description quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph). BMW’s U.S. release quotes 0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds, an 11.5-second quarter-mile and a 201-mph maximum speed.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The two acceleration times should not be ranked as if they were the same test. Reaching 100 km/h means reaching about 62 mph, while 60 mph is a shorter distance and lower terminal speed. The starting surface, tires, temperature, test procedure and equipment can also affect a launch result. ALPINA’s 0–100 km/h value and BMW’s 0–60-mph value are best reported with their original units and source labels intact.
The top-speed figures are directly aligned in the published material: ALPINA gives 324 km/h and BMW U.S. gives 201 mph. Those are the same rounded maximum-speed claim expressed in metric and imperial units. Neither source in the supplied material is an independent road test, so these numbers should be understood as manufacturer-published specifications rather than verified instrumented-test results.
Reading the official video and brochure together
The March 30, 2021 ALPINA video is useful for identifying what the headline refers to because its title names the B8 Gran Coupé and its description lists the international output and performance data. The brochure provides the formal engine wording: “The 4.4 litre V8 engine with bi-turbo charging produces an impressive 457 kW (621 hp).” That sentence is an ALPINA statement, not an independent dyno measurement.

BMW Group’s U.S. release adds the regional context. It announced the 2022 BMW ALPINA B8 Gran Coupé in the United States on March 24, 2021 and used the country’s 612-hp specification. When you see a U.S. listing, registration document or article using 612 hp, the market qualifier is more informative than trying to convert it into the international brochure’s headline number.
What the original U.S. price does—and does not—tell you
BMW Group’s U.S. launch announcement listed a starting MSRP of $139,900 plus a $995 destination charge for the 2022 model. That was a launch-era price published in 2021, not a current price promise. It should not be used to estimate today’s used-car value, dealer inventory, insurance cost or the price of a later model year.
The available material establishes the launch announcement and its stated specification, but it does not establish current dealer availability or a present-day transaction price. If you are evaluating a specific car, verify its model year, market, equipment and documentation rather than applying the historical launch figure.
B8 tire sizes listed for owners
BMW Canada lists more than one tire configuration for the B8. The detailed 21-inch specification is a 245/35ZR21 96Y tire at the front and a 285/30ZR21 100Y tire at the rear. The same material also identifies a 20-inch all-season option, but the supplied specification does not provide dimensions for that package.
| Configuration | Front | Rear | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21-inch performance setup | 245/35ZR21 96Y | 285/30ZR21 100Y | BMW Canada lists these sizes and ratings |
| 20-inch all-season option | Not stated | Not stated | BMW Canada identifies the option, but the dimensions are not given here |
The numbers in a tire size carry practical meaning. “245” and “285” are nominal section widths in millimetres; “35” and “30” are aspect-ratio percentages; “ZR” identifies a high-speed radial category; and “96Y” or “100Y” supplies the load-index and speed-rating markings. The front and rear sizes are staggered, so replacing one axle should not be treated as a universal fitment exercise.

Before buying a tire, confirm the model year, wheel package, axle position, load index, speed rating and the exact vehicle identification information. A listing that matches the width and diameter can still be unsuitable if its load or speed rating differs. The published sizes establish what BMW Canada lists; they do not prove that every B8, wheel option or market uses that exact combination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which horsepower number should you use?
- Identify the market. If the question concerns the ALPINA video or international brochure, report 457 kW (621 hp). If it concerns a U.S.-market 2022 car, report BMW’s 612 hp.
- Name the source in the same sentence. “ALPINA lists 621 hp internationally” and “BMW U.S. lists 612 hp for the U.S. model” prevent a regional specification from being presented as universal.
- Keep the test units attached to performance claims. Use 0–100 km/h for ALPINA’s 3.4-second figure and 0–60 mph for BMW U.S.’s 3.3-second figure; do not merge them into one acceleration result.
- Separate factory claims from testing. The listed power, torque, acceleration and top speed are manufacturer-published specifications. They are not independent dyno or track-test results.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 621-hp figure a typo?
No. It is the 457 kW (621 hp) output stated in ALPINA’s international brochure and video description. BMW’s 612-hp figure is the separate U.S.-market specification.
Does 621 hp mean 621 mechanical horsepower everywhere?
Not necessarily. ALPINA labels the video figure “621 PS/hp,” and horsepower conventions vary by region. Quote the unit and the market exactly as the source does instead of silently converting the number.
Are the B8’s 3.4-second and 3.3-second launches directly comparable?
No. One is 0–100 km/h and the other is 0–60 mph. They use different terminal speeds and are published by different regional sources.
