They marked 30 years since the R 80 G/S arrived in autumn 1980—not the anniversary of the later R 1200 GS or F-series models. BMW announced the editions on 10 May 2010 and said they would be available from mid-May that year.
What BMW’s 30th GS anniversary marked
The anniversary celebrated the GS lineage that began when BMW Motorrad introduced the R 80 G/S in autumn 1980. BMW described that original motorcycle as combining on-road and off-road qualities. Its 2010 press kit called the occasion “thirty years of the BMW GS.” BMW’s 2010 “30 Years GS” press kit sets out the four special models and their equipment.
The R 100 GS is an important part of the family history, but it was not one of the four 2010 anniversary editions. BMW’s history places the R 100 GS generation in 1987–1996; the R 1100 GS era began in 1994, and the R 1200 GS generation ran from 2004 to 2012. BMW Motorrad’s GS history provides that broader model timeline.
What all four 2010 editions shared
Each edition wore Alpine White non-metallic paint and three-colour decals in BMW Motorrad Motorsport livery, along with anniversary identification. The location of the model designation varied: it was on the tank of both R 1200 models, the airbox cover of the F 800 GS, and the rear of the F 650 GS. BMW also gave each a red seat with a three-dimensional GS stamp, though the Adventure seat was red and black.

These were model-specific special editions, not a single equipment package applied identically across the range. Wheel type, hand protection, engine protection and windshield details varied.

BMW positioned the F 650 GS as the smaller model, with lower seat height and everyday usability relative to the F 800 GS. The company also said black low-height seat options were available for the R 1200 GS and F 800 GS. Options and equipment could vary by market and configuration, so a particular motorcycle’s fitted parts should be checked against its original market specification.

Where the R 100 GS fits in the story
The R 100 GS belongs to the GS lineage, not the 2010 anniversary-edition lineup. BMW Group Classic lists the R 100 GS (E91) production period as 1990–1994 and says the 1991 model year received a comprehensive update. Its entry gives that E91 model’s engine capacity as 980 cc, output as 44 kW (60 hp) at 6,500 rpm, and top speed as 181 km/h. Those are historical specifications for the R 100 GS (E91), not for any of the four 2010 editions. BMW Group Classic’s R 100 GS (E91) entry describes the model and its 1991 update.
BMW’s 2010 press kit also identifies the 1994 R 1100 GS as the first GS with a four-valve boxer, introducing Telelever front suspension alongside Paralever rear suspension. The kit separately describes the R 100 GS as the first enduro to feature ABS; that is BMW’s historical claim about that model.

How the early GS became a significant BMW model
BMW Motorrad’s 2010 anniversary magazine reports that 6,631 R 80 G/S motorcycles had left the Berlin production line by the end of 1981 and that 21,864 had been sold by 1987. The same magazine gives a historical total of 34,203 R 80 G/S units sold. These are figures published in the commemorative magazine, not current production or sales data.
The magazine also recounts a 1990 refresh of the R 80 GS and R 100 GS, unveiled at IFMA in Cologne for the series’ tenth birthday. It describes a frame-fixed cockpit trim, an adjustable wind deflector and a Bilstein-developed suspension strut. For the refreshed models it gives 225 mm of front spring deflection, 180 mm of rear travel and a 26-litre tank; those figures refer to the models and context discussed in the magazine, not every GS variant. BMW Motorrad’s 2010 anniversary magazine recounts this early history.
