BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA at a glance
The BMW is a four-door sedan even though its name includes “Gran Coupe.” Mercedes-Benz classifies the GLA as an SUV. That distinction affects seating access, cargo loading, driving position, and the availability of all-wheel drive more than the badge comparison suggests.

Are they really competitors?
They overlap in price and premium-brand positioning, but they answer different needs. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a low-slung sedan profile and a conventional trunk. The GLA raises the seating position and uses a taller hatchback-style body, making it easier to load bulky objects and step into the rear seats.
What “Gran Coupe” means here
BMW describes the 228 Gran Coupe as a four-door sedan. The name signals a sloping, coupe-influenced roof rather than an SUV classification. It is not the BMW choice for maximum vertical cargo access; its appeal is the sedan format combined with compact dimensions and available xDrive.
What “GLA” means here
Mercedes-Benz markets the GLA as an SUV. The taller body and rear hatch are the practical differences buyers notice first. The GLA 250 4MATIC cited here also includes all-wheel drive as standard, rather than making it a separate drivetrain decision.

Prices, model years, and what the MSRP does not include
The U.S. BMW page lists the 2027 228 Gran Coupe at a $40,000 starting MSRP and the 228 xDrive at $42,000. The U.S. Mercedes-Benz page lists the 2026 GLA 250 4MATIC at $43,500. These are manufacturer-listed prices, not guaranteed transaction prices. The GLA is therefore $3,500 above the base BMW listing and $1,500 above the BMW xDrive listing before equipment, destination, taxes, and dealer charges.
BMW notes that actual dealer prices are set by dealers. The shown-vehicle MSRP excludes taxes, title, license, registration, and any adjusted market value. Options, destination charges, accessories, financing, and local fees can also change the amount on a buyer’s worksheet. Ask for an itemized out-the-door quote rather than comparing window-sticker starting prices alone.
How to make the price comparison fair
- Confirm that you are comparing the same market and model year: the cited BMW is a 2027 model, while the cited GLA is a 2026.
- Decide whether all-wheel drive is required. If it is, compare the GLA 250 4MATIC with the BMW 228 xDrive, not with the front-wheel-drive-based BMW starting model.
- Match equipment such as driver-assistance packages, audio, wheels, and upholstery before treating a quote as a value comparison.
- Request the dealer’s selling price, destination charge, taxes, registration, and add-ons separately.
- Ask whether the quoted vehicle is in stock, incoming, or a customer order. A lower advertised price may apply only to a particular VIN or incentive.
Drivetrain and performance
BMW 228 and 228 xDrive
BMW lists 241 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four in the 228 models. The lineup is front-wheel-drive-based, with a separate xDrive version for buyers who want all-wheel drive. BMW gives a preliminary 0–60-mph result of 6.1 seconds for the base car and 5.8 seconds for xDrive.
Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC
The cited GLA uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with mild-hybrid drive, an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz lists 221 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 6.6-second 0–60-mph figure.

What those numbers do—and do not—prove
On the manufacturers’ stated figures, the BMW is quicker, including the xDrive version. The results are not independent tests conducted under matched conditions, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed road-test outcome. Tire choice, weather, fuel, passenger load, launch procedure, and equipment can change acceleration.
For snow, steep driveways, or frequent wet-road use, the GLA’s standard 4MATIC removes one configuration decision. BMW buyers can obtain similar drivetrain coverage with the xDrive model, but it is a separate version with its own price and equipment details. All-wheel drive can improve traction when the available grip is low, but it does not replace suitable tires or cautious driving.
Space, seating, and daily utility
GLA measurements and cargo
Mercedes-Benz lists five seats, 50.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity, 41.0 inches of front legroom, and 38.0 inches of rear legroom for the U.S. GLA specification. The vehicle measures 173.6 inches long, 63.5 inches high, and has a 107.4-inch wheelbase.
Those dimensions support the GLA’s utility-oriented character: a taller roof, a higher seating position, and a rear hatch that is generally easier to use for strollers, boxes, or tall grocery loads. Cargo volume depends on how a manufacturer measures space and whether seats are upright or folded. Ask the dealer which configuration produces the published 50.5-cubic-foot figure.
What is established for the BMW
The reviewed U.S. BMW material does not provide a directly comparable cargo-volume or rear-legroom figure. It would therefore be misleading to assign the BMW an exact numerical disadvantage or claim a measured cargo winner. Shoppers should place both vehicles side by side, open the trunks, and test the actual items they carry.
Access and comfort questions to check in person
- Can rear passengers enter without ducking under the BMW’s sloping roof?
- Does the GLA’s taller seating position feel comfortable for the driver and passengers?
- Will a child seat, pet carrier, wheelchair component, or sports equipment fit through each vehicle’s opening?
- Are the front seats positioned so an adult can sit behind the intended driving position?
- Can you lift a heavy object over the trunk lip in the BMW, or does the GLA hatch make that task easier?
- Do the rear doors open wide enough for a child seat, and can you reach the buckles without moving the front seats?
Features and safety equipment
BMW lists Adaptive M Suspension, BMW Digital Key Plus, wireless device charging, Harman Kardon audio, touchscreen technology, and standard driver-assistance systems on 228 models. Exact availability can vary by trim and option package, so verify that the vehicle you are buying includes the displayed equipment.
BMW identifies Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation as standard on the 228 models. These are equipment descriptions, not evidence that the BMW is safer overall.

The material available for this comparison does not establish a matched, independent crash-test result or a complete equipment-by-equipment safety comparison. Do not choose a safety winner from the feature names alone. Check the latest safety ratings for the exact model year and confirm which driver-assistance functions are standard, optional, or unavailable on the specific stock number.
When comparing technology, operate both systems during a test drive rather than assuming similarly named features behave identically. Check phone pairing, charging location, screen visibility, camera views, warning settings, and whether a subscription is required for any connected service.
Fuel economy and emissions: do not mix test cycles
The U.S. GLA listing gives 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. A matched U.S. fuel-economy figure for the 2027 BMW 228 was not established in the reviewed material, so this comparison cannot rank the two on EPA-style efficiency.
BMW Germany publishes different data for European variants. Its technical page lists the 220 Gran Coupe mild hybrid at 5.8–5.6 liters per 100 kilometers combined WLTP consumption and 131–126 g/km WLTP CO₂ emissions. Those figures are for a European 220 variant, not the U.S. 228, and WLTP results cannot be compared directly with U.S. EPA mpg.
BMW also notes that WLTP outcomes vary with load, driving style, route, weather, accessories, tires, and battery condition. Use the fuel-economy label for the vehicle sold in your market and estimate costs from your own annual mileage and local fuel prices. Do not treat the European emissions range as a prediction of U.S. registration costs or fuel bills.

The U.S. comparison is not a same-year lineup
The BMW specifications above come from a U.S. page for the 2027 228 Gran Coupe. The Mercedes-Benz figures come from a U.S. page for the 2026 GLA 250 4MATIC. Model-year differences can affect standard equipment, availability, pricing, warranty terms, and financing. Confirm the build year and delivery date on any quote.

Those prices, order dates, powertrains, and range claims are explicitly German and do not establish U.S. availability, EPA range, or U.S. pricing for the 2026 GLA discussed here. Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Källenius described the announced vehicle as having “a newly designed interior that brings even more space and comfort,” but that statement concerns the redesigned vehicle announced for Europe.
European BMW data illustrates why market labels matter
BMW Germany’s technical page lists a 220 Gran Coupe mild hybrid with 170 PS system output, 5.8–5.6 l/100 km combined WLTP consumption, and 131–126 g/km WLTP CO₂ emissions. Its dimension table gives the 216 Gran Coupe a length of 4,546 millimeters, width of 1,800 millimeters excluding mirrors, height of 1,445 millimeters, wheelbase of 2,670 millimeters, and 430 liters of luggage capacity; the 220 entry lists 360 liters.
These are European variants and measurements, not substitute specifications for the U.S. 2027 228. Engine outputs, luggage figures, emissions tests, and equipment packages can change by market. Use them only to understand why an overseas review or listing may not match a U.S. dealer vehicle.
Ownership costs and purchase risks to consider
No verified insurance, maintenance, reliability, resale, or total-cost-of-ownership comparison is established for these specific model years. Those costs vary with driver, location, mileage, coverage, financing, tires, options, and dealer labor rates. Obtain insurance quotes using the exact VIN or trim, and ask both dealers for scheduled-service pricing if long-term budget is important.
Do not assume the $3,500 gap between the base BMW and GLA remains after options. A BMW 228 xDrive narrows the listed difference to $1,500 before equipment, while a heavily optioned sedan can exceed a minimally equipped SUV. Compare the final configured price, not only the headline MSRP.
Which one should you buy?
| Your priority | More natural fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest listed entry price in this comparison | BMW 228 Gran Coupe | The BMW’s base U.S. MSRP is below the listed GLA starting point. |
| All-wheel drive without selecting another BMW version | Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC | 4MATIC is included on the cited GLA configuration. |
| Sedan driving position and lower body profile | BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe | BMW classifies it as a four-door sedan. |
| Hatchback loading and published cargo capacity | Mercedes-Benz GLA | The GLA is an SUV with a rear hatch and a manufacturer-published cargo figure. |
| Strongest manufacturer-stated acceleration | BMW 228, especially xDrive | BMW’s published 0–60 figures are quicker than Mercedes-Benz’s stated GLA figure, though conditions are not independently matched. |
| Exact cargo comparison before ordering | Neither can be chosen from the published data alone | A directly comparable U.S. BMW cargo measurement was not stated; test both vehicles with your own gear. |
| Independent safety winner | Not established | The available material does not provide matched independent crash-test evidence. |
A practical test-drive and purchase checklist
- Verify the identity. Record model year, trim, drivetrain, engine, stock number, and production date for each vehicle.
- Check the seating position. Drive the BMW with the steering wheel and seat adjusted for you, then sit behind that position. Repeat in the GLA.
- Measure your cargo. Bring a stroller, instrument case, luggage, pet carrier, or other item that routinely travels with you. Test the opening, floor length, and seat-folding process.
- Test the rear seats. Check headroom, knee clearance, child-seat access, USB ports, vents, and the ease of opening the doors in a tight parking space.
- Confirm equipment by VIN or window sticker. Verify suspension, audio, charging, blind-spot monitoring, lane warning, collision mitigation, heated seats, and any package shown in an advertisement.
- Compare like-for-like quotes. Ask each dealer for selling price, destination, taxes, registration, accessories, finance terms, and mandatory fees on separate lines.
- Confirm drivetrain expectations. If AWD is non-negotiable, ensure the BMW quote is for 228 xDrive and the Mercedes-Benz quote is for the 4MATIC model.
- Check current availability. A 2027 BMW listing and a 2026 Mercedes-Benz listing may not be physically interchangeable at your local dealer, especially during a model-year changeover.
- Review the return and deposit terms. Before placing a custom order, ask whether the deposit is refundable and when the final price is locked.
Bottom-line decision
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is the better match for a buyer who specifically wants a sedan, values the lower listed entry price, or prefers the option to choose front-wheel drive or xDrive. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the better match for a buyer who prioritizes an SUV shape, standard all-wheel drive on the cited trim, easier hatchback loading, and a published 50.5-cubic-foot cargo capacity.

No. BMW describes the 228 Gran Coupe as a four-door sedan. Its coupe-inspired roofline does not change the body-style classification.
Which is cheaper, the BMW 228 or Mercedes-Benz GLA 250?
The listed U.S. starting MSRP is $40,000 for the 2027 BMW 228, $42,000 for the 228 xDrive, and $43,500 for the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC. The GLA is $3,500 above the base BMW and $1,500 above the BMW xDrive before options and fees.
Does the BMW 228 have all-wheel drive?
The 228 lineup is front-wheel-drive-based, and BMW lists a separate 228 xDrive version. If AWD is required, compare that $42,000 xDrive listing with the standard-4MATIC GLA.
How much cargo space does the Mercedes-Benz GLA have?
Mercedes-Benz lists 50.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity for the U.S. GLA 250 4MATIC. The reviewed U.S. BMW page does not provide a directly comparable cargo figure.

Are the 2026 GLA and 2027 BMW the same model year?
No. The cited Mercedes-Benz is a 2026 GLA 250 4MATIC, while the cited BMW is a 2027 228 Gran Coupe. Model-year differences can affect equipment, pricing, availability, and financing.
Can European BMW or Mercedes figures be used for U.S. buying decisions?
Not directly. European specifications use different variants, prices, dimensions, and WLTP testing. Confirm U.S. EPA figures, equipment, and pricing for the VIN sold in your market.
The Bottom Line
Pick the 2027 BMW 228 Gran Coupe for sedan shape, lower listed MSRP, and an available xDrive alternative. Pick the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC for SUV access, standard AWD, and its published 50.5-cu.-ft. cargo capacity. Verify the exact VIN, equipment, model year, and out-the-door quote before buying.
