The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s four-door compact sedan, not a two-door 2 Series. In the United States, the current range runs from the front-wheel-drive 228 to the all-wheel-drive 228 xDrive and 312-horsepower M235 xDrive. Those versions differ enough in traction, acceleration and price that the right choice depends on your climate and priorities. Equipment and even model names change by market, so use the figures below as a US-market guide and verify the exact car you can buy.
What the 2 Series Gran Coupe is
The “Gran Coupe” name identifies the four-door body style. It has a fixed roof, four side doors and a separate trunk, while the two-door 2 Series Coupe is a different vehicle. BMW markets the Gran Coupe as a compact sedan with a low roofline and coupe-influenced styling. That shape may appeal if you want a smaller BMW with four-door access, but a specification sheet cannot answer whether adults fit comfortably in the rear, whether a child seat installs easily or how much of the trunk opening is usable. Those are questions for an in-person inspection.

BMW’s US page currently presents 2027 model-year 228 Gran Coupe, 228 xDrive Gran Coupe and M235 xDrive Gran Coupe models. BMW UK lists a different range, including a 220 M Sport Gran Coupé, with its own equipment and ownership offers. A UK 220, a US 228 and an M235 should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they share the Gran Coupe name. Engine outputs, transmissions, standard features, taxes, prices and available options can all vary by country and model year.
US trims and the numbers that separate them
BMW’s US technical table gives the following headline specifications. The acceleration figures are preliminary manufacturer comparison numbers, not independent instrumented-test results.

The 228 and 228 xDrive use the same listed horsepower and torque. The xDrive version’s quicker published time reflects the traction benefit of all-wheel drive rather than a more powerful engine. The M235 xDrive is the performance step: it retains the listed 295 lb-ft but raises output to 312 hp and cuts the claimed 0–60 time substantially.
228 or 228 xDrive: what are you paying for?
Choose the 228 for simplicity and value
The 228 is the only US version in this lineup with front-wheel drive. That layout can be entirely adequate in dry conditions and avoids paying for an all-wheel-drive system you may not need. It is also the slowest of the three on BMW’s preliminary figures, although 6.1 seconds to 60 mph is still a useful benchmark for everyday traffic. Confirm the actual transaction price and included equipment for the model year you are considering; BMW’s published power figures do not establish pricing.
Choose the 228 xDrive for traction, not extra power
The 228 xDrive keeps the 228’s 241-hp, 295-lb-ft specification while adding all-wheel drive. It may make sense for buyers who regularly drive on snow, steep wet roads or loose surfaces, provided the additional purchase and running costs fit the budget. All-wheel drive does not guarantee shorter stopping distances on ice, and winter tires remain important. Because BMW’s 5.8-second figure is a preliminary comparison result, do not assume every xDrive car will reproduce it in ordinary weather, with different tires or with a different equipment configuration.

The M235 xDrive is the clear choice when rapid acceleration is a central reason to buy the car. BMW lists 312 hp and a preliminary 4.7-second 0–60 mph time. That number places it in a different performance bracket from the two 228 models, but it does not tell you whether the ride is comfortable, the steering is satisfying or the exhaust and road noise suit your commute. Those subjective qualities require a drive in the exact trim, wheel and suspension configuration.

How much trust should you place in the 0–60 figures?
BMW labels the times preliminary and warns that results vary with specification, conditions, procedures and driving style. Treat them as a way to compare the three versions within BMW’s own test framework, not as independent proof. Launch technique, pavement temperature, tire condition, fuel load and testing equipment can change an observed result. An independent road test using a production car is the appropriate source for verified acceleration, braking and handling measurements.
The figures also do not predict fuel economy. No standardized, same-market fuel-economy comparison is established here, so buyers should consult the official efficiency label for the precise vehicle and then consider how speed, temperature, traffic and winter tires will affect real use.
What driver assistance is standard in the US 228?
BMW says the US 228 Gran Coupe includes these systems as standard:
- Active Blind Spot Detection
- Lane Departure Warning
- Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
Check the window sticker and current equipment list for the specific model year, package and market. A feature listed as standard on a US 228 page should not automatically be assumed standard on a UK 220, an earlier model year or an M235. Driver-assistance names can also describe different levels of intervention, so ask the retailer to demonstrate the warning, steering and braking behavior rather than relying on the feature name alone.

What the Euro NCAP safety assessment actually shows
Euro NCAP’s 2025 assessment of the 2 Series Gran Coupé requires careful reading. Euro NCAP describes the car as a partner to the 1 Series tested earlier in 2025. Some additional tests were performed on the 2 Series, but the assessment is primarily based on the 1 Series test program. It is therefore not a wholly separate, from-scratch crash evaluation of every Gran Coupe configuration.
The published findings are mixed rather than an unqualified “safe” or “unsafe” label:
- The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test.
- Driver chest protection was weak in that test, with marginal knee and femur protection reported.
- In the full-width rigid-barrier test, chest protection was weak for both the driver and the rear passenger.
- Protection in the side-barrier and side-pole tests was good.
- Euro NCAP also reports child-occupant, pedestrian and cyclist protection results and automatic emergency-braking performance.
Use the complete Euro NCAP report for the exact scores, test conditions and safety-assist definitions. The test-family qualification matters when comparing this car with another model that has a wholly independent assessment. Safety equipment can also differ by market, so a European result does not automatically describe a US-specification vehicle in every detail.

Dimensions and cargo: what the specification does and does not tell you
BMW lists the US 228 at 179.2 inches long with a 105.1-inch wheelbase and 15.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Those are useful planning figures, especially when comparing external length with a garage or parking space. They do not establish the height or width of the trunk opening, the shape of the load floor, rear headroom, legroom, visibility or whether a bulky stroller fits without folding seats.

Check these items at the dealership
- Measure the trunk opening, not just the stated volume, with your largest suitcase or stroller.
- Install your child seat in the preferred rear seating position and check front-seat clearance.
- Sit in both rear outboard seats for headroom, knee room and ease of entry.
- Test the driving position with the steering wheel, seat and mirrors adjusted for the primary driver.
- Inspect sightlines over the shoulder and through the rear window before deciding whether available cameras and sensors compensate for the body shape.
Ride, steering, noise and infotainment still need a test drive
The available material does not establish ride comfort, steering feel, road noise, rear-seat comfort, infotainment usability or long-term reliability. BMW’s specifications can tell you engine output and dimensions; they cannot tell you whether the suspension is too firm on your roads or whether the interface is easy to use while moving.
Arrange a drive that includes broken pavement, a highway section and low-speed parking. Try the exact wheel and tire package you intend to buy, because larger wheels and shorter sidewalls can change impact harshness and noise. Test the adaptive-cruise, lane-warning and blind-spot systems in a safe setting, and verify that the screen, physical controls, voice commands and phone connection work the way your household expects.
A Consumer Reports search summary describes the 2025 refresh as adding power, a new transmission and updated interior controls. That summary should be treated as a narrow description of changes, not as a substitute for a full road test or detailed reliability data.
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe versus 4 Series Gran Coupe
BMW describes the 4 Series Gran Coupe as rear-wheel-drive-based and available with more powerful engines and more upscale features. That makes it a larger, more premium step in BMW’s range, but the comparison only becomes useful when prices, equipment and dimensions are matched within the same market and model year.

If you need a small footprint and the lowest entry point, start with the 2 Series. If rear-drive balance, stronger engines or a richer feature set matter more, investigate the 4 Series and compare like-for-like equipment. Do not infer that the larger car is automatically more comfortable or more practical without sitting in both and loading your own gear.
A buyer’s checklist for the exact car you are considering
- Identify the market and model year. Confirm whether the car is a US 228, 228 xDrive, M235 xDrive or a market-specific version such as the UK 220 M Sport.
- Confirm the drivetrain. The US 228 is front-wheel drive; both US xDrive models use all-wheel drive.
- Match the equipment. Check the window sticker for driver assistance, wheels, tires, seats, navigation and any package that changes the car’s price or ride.
- Use BMW’s performance figures correctly. Treat 6.1, 5.8 and 4.7 seconds as preliminary manufacturer comparisons, not guarantees.
- Drive the exact configuration. Test the roads you use, including rough pavement and highway speeds, and evaluate noise, ride, steering and controls yourself.
- Check people and cargo physically. Bring your child seat, luggage or other everyday items rather than relying on the 15.2-cubic-foot figure alone.
- Compare total ownership terms. Review local warranty, service pricing, insurance, tires and financing; BMW UK’s finance, accessories and Proactive Care offerings are market-specific and may not apply elsewhere.
- Read the relevant safety report. Consider the Euro NCAP test-family caveat and verify the equipment fitted to the vehicle sold in your country.
Is the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe worth buying?
It can be, if you want a compact BMW sedan and choose the drivetrain deliberately. The 228 is the straightforward front-wheel-drive entry point. The 228 xDrive adds all-weather traction without adding listed horsepower. The M235 xDrive is the performance purchase, with 312 hp and BMW’s 4.7-second preliminary 0–60 claim.
The decision is not complete until you verify local pricing and equipment, inspect rear-seat and trunk usability, and drive the exact car. Published specifications settle the trim and power differences; they do not settle comfort, interface quality, visibility, fuel economy or reliability. Buy the 2 Series Gran Coupe when its size, equipment and drivetrain fit your actual use—not merely because the badge or acceleration number looks attractive.
