Choose the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line 2.0L TSI if upright SUV packaging, 4MOTION and a large, expandable boot matter more. In the India comparison available for these exact variants, the BMW is listed at ₹45.80 lakh ex-showroom and the Tiguan at ₹47.11 lakh. Those are dated, third-party figures—not current on-road quotes—and the published fuel-economy claims are 16.35 km/l for the BMW and 12.58 km/l for the Tiguan.
The two vehicles are not direct mechanical equivalents. They use different body formats, drivetrains and practical priorities. What the comparison actually covers
The most useful like-for-like figures available are for India: the BMW 218 M Sport versus the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line 2.0L TSI. The comparison page was updated September 9, 2026, while Volkswagen India’s technical page was accessed October 13, 2026. If you are shopping in another country, or looking at another model year, do not transfer these prices, engines, safety equipment or trim names without checking that market’s official listing.

The BMW is a four-door Gran Coupe, a sedan-like shape with a low roofline. The Tiguan is a compact SUV with a taller body and SUV-oriented packaging. That distinction is more important to daily use than a small difference in list price. A buyer carrying bulky luggage, loading a child seat or needing all-weather traction may value the Tiguan’s format; a buyer who prefers a lower driving position and a more compact-looking car may prefer the BMW.

The table deliberately leaves unsupported BMW cells as “not stated.” Other 2 Series Gran Coupe versions and other markets can have different outputs, transmissions and equipment.
Start with the decision that matters: Gran Coupe or SUV?
When the BMW format makes sense
The BMW’s four-door Gran Coupe is the choice for someone who specifically wants a lower-slung, sedan-like car rather than an SUV. Its published India configuration is front-wheel drive. The available material does not establish its Indian boot volume, ground clearance, dimensions or acceleration, so those should be checked on the exact vehicle you will buy rather than borrowed from a foreign 2 Series specification.
A lower body can be the deciding factor if you dislike SUV proportions, prefer the visual character of a four-door coupe-style car, or mostly carry people and ordinary luggage. Those are format decisions, not conclusions that the BMW will automatically handle better; specifications alone cannot establish ride, steering or handling quality.
When the Tiguan format makes sense
The Tiguan provides compact-SUV packaging and a published boot capacity of 652 litres, expandable to 1,650 litres. That gives the cargo area a clearly documented advantage in flexibility, although there is no same-market BMW figure in the supplied material for a direct volume comparison. The Tiguan’s 4MOTION system may also be relevant to buyers who regularly encounter slippery roads or want all-wheel drive, but it does not remove the need for appropriate tyres and sensible driving.
The taller SUV body may make loading and access more convenient for some families, but the sources do not establish a universal advantage in seating height, rear-seat space or visibility. Sit in both vehicles, install any child seats you use and test the cargo opening with your own luggage before treating those as settled benefits.

Powertrain: what is confirmed and what is not
Tiguan R-Line 2.0L TSI
Volkswagen India’s official technical page lists a 1,984 cc TSI engine producing 204 PS and 320 Nm, paired with a seven-speed DSG and 4MOTION. Those are the strongest confirmed mechanical details in this comparison because they come from the manufacturer’s India specification. The 652-litre boot figure, expandable to 1,650 litres, is on the same technical listing.
These numbers describe the Indian Tiguan R-Line DSG. They should not be combined with an Austrian, German or U.S. Tiguan trim whose engine, equipment or test method may differ. A drivetrain label such as 4MOTION also does not tell you the vehicle’s exact tyre specification, service requirements or fuel consumption in your use.

BMW 218 M Sport
The available India comparison identifies the BMW 218 M Sport as front-wheel drive but does not establish a complete India engine-output or transmission specification. That means a precise horsepower, torque, acceleration or gearbox comparison would be speculation. Verify those items on BMW India’s current technical sheet and the dealer’s written quotation for the exact trim.
Do not substitute U.S. 2025 BMW 228 xDrive Gran Coupe numbers for the India 218. BMW Group PressClub USA’s 2024 release for the 2025 U.S. model lists a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 hp and 295 lb-ft, but that is a different model designation, market and drivetrain. It demonstrates why apparently similar names cannot be treated as a common specification.
Price and fuel economy: useful starting points, not ownership forecasts
Price difference in the published India comparison
ZigWheels lists the BMW 218 M Sport at ₹45.80 lakh ex-showroom and the Tiguan R-Line 2.0L TSI at ₹47.11 lakh ex-showroom. On those figures, the Tiguan is ₹1.31 lakh higher before registration, insurance, taxes, financing, accessories and dealer charges. Because the figures are dated third-party listings, they are not a current transaction quote. A dealer may quote a different model year, stock status, discount or fee structure.

Use the ex-showroom numbers only to establish the approximate starting relationship. Ask each seller for an itemised on-road quotation in your registration state. Compare the same assumptions for insurance, optional packages, extended warranty, service plans, registration and financing; otherwise the apparent ₹1.31 lakh gap can change substantially.

The same comparison lists claimed ARAI economy of 16.35 km/l for the BMW and 12.58 km/l for the Tiguan. The BMW’s published claim is 3.77 km/l higher, or about 30% above the Tiguan figure when calculated from the listed numbers. That calculation is only a comparison of the claims; it is not a prediction of your monthly fuel bill.
ARAI-cycle results are controlled test figures. Traffic, speed, air-conditioning use, payload, tyre pressures, road gradient and driving style can produce a different result. The figures also belong to the specific Indian variants in that comparison and should not be mixed with WLTP or EPA figures from Europe or the United States. Estimate your own cost by using a conservative real-world assumption, your annual kilometres and the current local fuel price, then confirm the result with a test drive and owner-oriented service information.
Space and everyday practicality
Cargo planning
The Tiguan has a manufacturer-published 652-litre boot that can expand to 1,650 litres. Volkswagen does not make that number a universal promise for every market or seat configuration, so check how the seats fold in the vehicle you are viewing. The supplied India material does not state a BMW boot capacity, so an honest comparison cannot declare the Tiguan’s numerical advantage over the BMW; it can only document the Tiguan’s capacity.
Bring the items that determine your purchase: a stroller, work cases, sports equipment, a large suitcase or a pet carrier. Measure the opening and the height beneath any parcel shelf, not just the headline litres. If you often carry long objects, ask whether the rear seatbacks fold in the arrangement you need and whether the folded floor is level.

Passenger and access needs
Neither the supplied comparison nor the official India specification establishes a complete dimensional or seating-space table for both vehicles. Do not assume that an SUV automatically has more usable rear legroom, or that a Gran Coupe automatically has less. Sit in the rear seats behind your normal driving position, check headroom, inspect door-opening angles and test entry with the people who will use the car.
For family buyers, repeat the exercise with child seats installed. Check whether the front passenger seat can remain in a comfortable position, whether the boot still accepts the stroller and whether rear passengers can buckle themselves. These observations answer practical questions that a brochure’s body-style label cannot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and equipment require a same-market check
The available sources do not establish a like-for-like safety verdict for the India BMW 218 M Sport and India Tiguan R-Line. A U.S. Tiguan page reviewed for this topic reports U.S.-specific 2026 information; that cannot stand in for India’s equipment, airbags, driver-assistance calibration or crash-test result. Likewise, a rating from one country’s testing body is not automatically transferable to another trim or model year.
Ask for the exact India model-year equipment list and identify which features are standard, optional or unavailable. Confirm, in writing:
- airbag count and locations for the supplied vehicle;
- electronic stability and traction systems;
- automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, if offered;
- adaptive cruise control, lane support and blind-spot monitoring, if offered;
- parking sensors, camera coverage and any surround-view system;
- the applicable crash-test body, test year and exact tested variant.
Do not use the presence of a feature on a foreign-market web page as proof that it is fitted to an Indian car. The dealer’s build sheet or official India brochure is the appropriate evidence.

Ownership costs that the headline price cannot answer
The supplied figures do not establish current Indian insurance premiums, scheduled-service prices, warranty terms, taxes, financing rates, tyre costs or resale values for either exact variant. Those costs vary by city, insurer, driver profile, loan, mileage and model year. Request them before deciding that one car is cheaper to own.
Build a comparable five-year estimate
- Get an itemised on-road price for each vehicle in the same registration location.
- Record the insurance quote with the same coverage, deductible and insured-declared-value assumptions.
- Ask the manufacturer or authorised dealer for scheduled-service intervals and prices, distinguishing prepaid plans from pay-as-you-go work.
- Obtain written warranty duration, mileage limits, exclusions and roadside-assistance terms.
- Estimate fuel from your own annual distance rather than the ARAI claims alone.
- Price replacement tyres, brake work and the insurance renewal after the first year.
- Use a finance quote with the same down payment, term and interest assumptions.
- Ask two local dealers about current stock, waiting time, exchange value and any non-optional charges.
This process will produce a location-specific total-cost estimate. The published ₹45.80 lakh and ₹47.11 lakh figures cannot answer those ownership questions by themselves.
How to test-drive the two cars fairly
- Fix the exact identity first. Write down the model year, trim, engine, gearbox, driven wheels and tyre size on each test-drive form. This prevents a different display vehicle from being mistaken for the quoted car.
- Repeat the same route. Drive comparable urban streets, a rough section, a highway stretch and a parking manoeuvre. Keep passengers and luggage similar.
- Evaluate access and visibility. Have every regular passenger enter and exit. Check the driving position, rear-seat access, mirror coverage and the effort needed to load the boot.
- Check low-speed behaviour. Observe clutch-free creep, parking smoothness, steering weight and the response of the automatic transmission. Do not convert a brief impression into a claim about long-term reliability.
- Check power where legal and safe. Merge normally and note whether the response suits your needs. The available sources do not establish a controlled acceleration test, so record your own impression rather than quoting an unsupported time.
- Inspect the controls. Operate the climate system, headlights, driver-assistance settings, infotainment, cameras and seat adjustments. Confirm that the Indian vehicle has the features you were shown.
- Load your real cargo. Put your stroller, luggage or equipment in both boots. Measure fit instead of relying on a litre figure alone.
- Read the paperwork before paying a deposit. Match the VIN, manufacturing date, model year, included equipment, warranty and cancellation terms to the quotation.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the BMW 218 M Sport when these priorities dominate
- You specifically want a four-door Gran Coupe rather than an SUV.
- The lower-slung body style is more appealing for your daily use and parking environment.
- You are comfortable with the India comparison’s front-wheel-drive configuration.
- The dated ex-showroom starting figure is useful to your budget, subject to a new quote.
- The BMW’s claimed 16.35 km/l ARAI figure, treated only as a test-cycle claim, aligns better with your expected use.
Choose the Tiguan R-Line when these priorities dominate
- You need compact-SUV packaging and the documented 652-litre boot, expandable to 1,650 litres.
- 4MOTION all-wheel drive is relevant to your roads, weather or personal preference.
- The confirmed 204 PS, 320 Nm, seven-speed DSG and 1,984 cc TSI specification fits your requirements.
- You are willing to pay the published ₹1.31 lakh ex-showroom premium before local charges, if a current quote preserves that relationship.
- You value cargo flexibility more than the BMW’s lower published ARAI-consumption claim.
Do not decide from these shortcuts
- Do not use U.S. BMW 228 xDrive output to represent an India BMW 218 M Sport.
- Do not treat an overseas Tiguan safety or equipment page as an Indian specification.
- Do not assume claimed ARAI economy equals fuel economy in traffic.
- Do not compare an ex-showroom price with someone else’s on-road price.
- Do not infer ride, handling, cabin space or comfort solely from horsepower, body style or boot volume.
A buyer’s verification checklist
Before signing, save the official or dealer documents for the exact vehicle and check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- country, model year and trim name;
- engine displacement, output and transmission;
- front-wheel drive or 4MOTION/all-wheel drive;
- standard and optional safety equipment;
- boot configuration and seat-folding arrangement;
- ex-showroom, registration, insurance, taxes and every dealer fee;
- warranty, roadside assistance and service-plan coverage;
- manufacture date, delivery mileage and VIN;
- test-drive impressions with your passengers and cargo;
- cancellation, booking and delivery conditions.
If a salesperson cannot confirm a specification in writing, treat it as unverified rather than filling the gap with a figure from another country. That discipline matters here because the same family names appear with different engines, outputs, drivetrains and safety equipment across regions.
Bottom line
For the India variants documented here, the BMW 218 M Sport is the lower-priced, lower-slung, front-wheel-drive alternative with the higher published ARAI-economy claim. The Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line costs more on the dated ex-showroom comparison but supplies a confirmed 204 PS/320 Nm 4MOTION powertrain, seven-speed DSG and a 652-to-1,650-litre boot range. The right purchase is therefore determined less by the ₹1.31 lakh starting-price gap than by whether your life fits a Gran Coupe or an SUV. Verify the current India quotation, equipment, safety specification and ownership costs before placing an order.
