Choose the 2027 BMW 228 Gran Coupe if you value premium equipment and the quicker quoted acceleration. Choose the 2026 Toyota Camry if hybrid fuel economy and a clearly advertised estimate of up to 51 combined mpg matter more. This is not a same-year, trim-for-trim test: the current U.S. BMW material covers the 2027 228 Gran Coupe and 228 xDrive, while Toyota’s official material covers the 2026 Camry. The right choice depends on the local price, exact trim, drivetrain and equipment you can actually buy.
BMW lists a $40,000 starting MSRP for the front-wheel-drive 228 Gran Coupe and $42,000 for the all-wheel-drive 228 xDrive. Toyota’s surfaced official overview does not provide a directly comparable Camry starting price. BMW quotes preliminary 0–60-mph results of 6.1 seconds for the 228 and 5.8 seconds for the 228 xDrive; Toyota’s overview instead emphasizes hybrid efficiency and up to 232 net combined horsepower. Treat every figure as manufacturer information, not as an independent road test.

What is actually being compared?
The name “BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe vs Toyota Camry” sounds like a conventional same-class comparison, but the current official U.S. pages represent different model years and different product priorities. BMW’s page is for the 2027 228 Gran Coupe and 228 xDrive, with an M235 xDrive also mentioned. The price, horsepower and acceleration figures in this article apply to the 228 variants, not the M235. Toyota’s pages cover the 2026 Camry, whose current overview presents the car as a hybrid. BMW’s model page is available at BMW USA; Toyota’s overview is at Toyota USA.

| Power figure | 241 hp | Up to 232 net combined hp |
| Quoted acceleration | 0–60 mph in 6.1 seconds (228) or 5.8 seconds (228 xDrive). BMW labels these preliminary test results and says actual results vary. | No comparable official 0–60-mph result surfaced in the cited material. |
| Drive options | Front-wheel drive for the 228; all-wheel drive for the 228 xDrive. | Front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. |
| Fuel-economy headline | The captured BMW Gran Coupe page does not establish a current fuel-economy figure. | Up to an estimated 51 combined mpg; equipment and results vary by trim. |

The BMW figures and qualifications come from its official model page. Toyota’s power, efficiency and drivetrain figures come from its official overview, while its safety feature list and scope warnings come from the 2026 Camry specifications page.
Price: why the BMW number is easier to find than the Camry number
BMW gives a clear entry point: $40,000 MSRP for the 228 Gran Coupe and $42,000 for the 228 xDrive. Those are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not guaranteed selling prices. BMW specifically cautions that MSRP does not equal the dealer’s actual sale price, and the published figure does not include taxes, registration, destination or other fees listed by the retailer. Options and packages can also move a vehicle well above its starting figure.
The captured Toyota overview does not expose a comparable Camry starting MSRP. That is not evidence that the Camry costs more or less; it means a fair price verdict requires a current quote for the specific trim, drivetrain, destination charge, dealer fees, incentives and financing terms. Toyota says information can change and that trim and equipment availability varies. Its specifications page applies to mainland-U.S. vehicles, so shoppers in other markets should not transfer the figures automatically.
Use an out-the-door comparison
- Select the exact Camry trim and whether you want front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand all-wheel drive.
- Build the BMW 228 or 228 xDrive with the equipment you would otherwise add to the Camry, including audio, driver assistance and winter or convenience features.
- Ask each retailer for an itemized out-the-door worksheet showing vehicle price, destination, documentation fees, taxes, registration, incentives and financing assumptions.
- Compare the two worksheets at the same time. A lower advertised MSRP can disappear after options, fees or an unavailable incentive.
Power and acceleration: BMW’s advantage is quoted speed, not an across-the-board victory
BMW lists 241 hp for both 228 variants. Toyota lists up to 232 net combined hp for the Camry. The numerical gap is modest, and the figures describe different powertrain architectures: BMW’s number is a peak engine-output specification, while Toyota’s is a net combined hybrid figure. It is therefore misleading to treat the 9-hp difference as a laboratory ranking.

BMW does provide acceleration estimates: 6.1 seconds from 0 to 60 mph for the 228 and 5.8 seconds for the 228 xDrive. BMW calls these “BMW AG preliminary test results” and warns that actual performance varies with vehicle specification, road and environmental conditions, testing procedures and driving style. They are useful for understanding BMW’s intended character, but they are not independent instrumented results.
The Toyota material used here does not provide a directly comparable Camry 0–60-mph result. If acceleration is decisive, arrange like-for-like drives or consult a reputable instrumented test using the exact trims and drivetrains you are considering. Do not substitute an unrelated Camry or another BMW 2 Series body style for the figures above.
What the numbers mean on the road
- The BMW’s published 5.8-to-6.1-second range gives it the clearer performance case on the available evidence.
- The Camry’s hybrid system may appeal to drivers who prioritize smooth, efficient commuting, but the cited material does not establish a comparative acceleration result.
- Payload, tires, weather, battery state and optional equipment can change real-world response in either vehicle, so a test drive remains important.
Drivetrain and all-wheel-drive choices
The base 228 Gran Coupe is front-wheel drive. The 228 xDrive raises the published starting MSRP to $42,000 and supplies all-wheel drive. That makes BMW’s drivetrain decision straightforward but ties AWD to a distinct model and price point.

Choose the drivetrain around your conditions
- Mostly dry roads and lowest entry price: compare the front-wheel-drive 228 with a front-wheel-drive Camry trim.
- Frequent snow, steep driveways or wet rural roads: price the BMW 228 xDrive against the Camry’s electronic on-demand AWD version, then check tire availability.
- Mixed use: test both drivetrains in the conditions you actually encounter and include their equipment differences in the out-the-door comparison.
Fuel economy: the Camry has the only headline estimate supplied here
Toyota advertises up to an estimated 51 combined mpg for the 2026 Camry. “Up to” is important: the maximum applies only to qualifying equipment and trim configurations, and Toyota notes that equipment can vary. Confirm the EPA label on the exact car because wheel, tire, drivetrain and trim choices can change the rating.
The captured current BMW Gran Coupe page does not establish a fuel-economy figure. Do not import a number from the BMW 2 Series Coupe, another model year or a different body style. Until the exact 228 window sticker and official rating are available, the defensible comparison is that Toyota publishes a high hybrid-efficiency target while this BMW source set does not provide a matching number.
Estimate running use without inventing a result
- Record the exact combined-mpg rating on the Camry’s EPA label and the BMW’s label for the vehicle you can buy.
- Estimate your annual miles and divide by each car’s combined-mpg figure to calculate gallons used.
- Multiply by your local fuel price, then test the result at several prices because fuel costs change.
- Keep the calculation separate from purchase price, maintenance and insurance; those ownership costs are not established by the cited material.
Safety and driver assistance: feature lists are not crash ratings
BMW lists Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning and Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation as standard on 228 models. Toyota lists a broad Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite: pre-collision support, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road-sign assist, automatic high beams and Proactive Driving Assist.

Cabin, audio and everyday equipment
BMW describes the Gran Coupe as a four-door coupe similar in size to a sedan and says it seats five. The current page highlights standard Adaptive M Suspension, a Harman Kardon Premium Sound System, BMW Digital Key Plus and wireless device charging on the 228 models. Those inclusions help explain why a buyer focused on equipment may prefer the BMW even before adding options.
Toyota’s overview lists an available nine-speaker JBL Premium Audio System. The captured official text does not expose matched passenger-volume, rear-seat, trunk or cargo measurements, nor does it provide a complete trim-by-trim equipment table. Do not claim that one car has more usable space without checking published measurements or sitting in both vehicles with the people and cargo you carry.
Make the equipment comparison concrete
- Confirm whether the audio system is standard or optional on the exact stock number.
- Pair a phone and test wireless charging with its case installed.
- Check the rear-seat cushion, door opening and roofline with the tallest regular passenger.
- Load the stroller, work case, sports gear or other items that matter to you; a specification sheet cannot show every shape constraint.
- Ask how digital-key functionality works with your phone and whether every driver can use it.
Which is better, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe or Toyota Camry?
Choose the BMW 228 Gran Coupe when premium equipment and quoted acceleration lead your list
The BMW is the evidence-based choice for a buyer who wants the more performance-oriented brief represented by the available figures: 241 hp, a preliminary 6.1-second 0–60-mph estimate for the front-drive 228, 5.8 seconds for the xDrive version, standard Adaptive M Suspension and the listed Harman Kardon audio, Digital Key Plus and wireless charging. Accept the $40,000 or $42,000 starting MSRP as a starting point only, and verify how options change the final price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the Camry when hybrid efficiency is the priority
The Camry is the stronger fit for a buyer who wants a hybrid powertrain and Toyota’s advertised maximum of 51 combined mpg. It also offers a choice of front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand AWD and a published Safety Sense 3.0 feature set. Because the official material here does not supply a comparable starting price or acceleration result, get a local quote and drive the exact trim before deciding.

Do not choose on brand reputation alone
The cited pages do not establish long-term reliability, maintenance expense, insurance rates, depreciation, resale value or total cost of ownership. Those can materially change the better financial decision, but they require separate, current evidence. Likewise, no comparative crash-test result is established here.
A practical buying process for this comparison
- Define the non-negotiables. Write down whether hybrid efficiency, AWD, acceleration, premium audio, digital-key access or a specific safety aid is essential rather than merely desirable.
- Match the drivetrain. Compare front-drive with front-drive or AWD with AWD before discussing price.
- Match equipment. Add the BMW options needed to equal the Camry equipment you want, and confirm whether the Camry’s JBL system and other features are standard or available only on selected trims.
- Verify official labels. Use the window sticker for MSRP, destination, EPA fuel economy and installed equipment. Toyota says specifications can change; BMW says MSRP is not the dealer’s final price.
- Drive both. Evaluate seating, visibility, ride, acceleration, braking feel, steering, cabin noise and the driver-assistance behavior on the roads you use.
- Request written quotes. Compare out-the-door totals, incentives and financing terms on the same date.
- Recheck availability. Confirm that the quoted model year, trim, drivetrain and color are physically available and that the price has not changed.
Important limits of this comparison
This article uses current official U.S. information accessed October 13, 2026. BMW’s page concerns the 2027 228 models; Toyota’s pages concern the 2026 Camry and mainland-U.S. vehicles. Information, inventory, incentives and equipment can change. The comparison does not include an independent road test, a full dimensions or cargo analysis, a matched trim test, crash-test ratings, reliability research or ownership-cost calculations.
For the final decision, use the official BMW page, Toyota’s Camry overview and the Camry specifications page to verify the exact vehicle. Then compare dealer worksheets rather than relying on a headline number.
