BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé or Škoda Kodiaq: Which Fits Your Space and Driving Needs?

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and Škoda Kodiaq serve different needs. See which one fits your seating, cargo, performance and budget priorities before comparing exact UK variants.

Choose the Škoda Kodiaq if you need seven seats, adaptable passenger space or a very large load bay. Choose the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé if you want a compact four-door car and prefer the option of BMW’s 300 hp M235 xDrive. They are not direct class rivals: one is a premium-leaning compact car, the other a substantially larger SUV. The right answer depends first on seats and cargo, then on the exact engine, drivetrain, equipment and current transaction price.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé vs Škoda Kodiaq at a glance

The figures below are manufacturer specifications for selected UK-market versions, not independent test results. Kodiaq luggage figures change with seat count and powertrain, while BMW figures differ between the 220 M Sport and M235 xDrive.

They solve different transport problems

BMW: a compact car for a car-shaped brief

The 2 Series Gran Coupé is a four-door car with a maximum of five seats. Its compact-car format suits buyers who want a lower, smaller vehicle rather than an SUV body. The BMW material identifies two very different UK examples: the front-wheel-drive 220 M Sport and the all-wheel-drive M235 xDrive. That distinction matters more than the shared badge; output, driven wheels, luggage volume and price all change with the variant.

Kodiaq: space and flexibility first

The Kodiaq is a larger SUV offered in five- and seven-seat forms. A third row is the decisive feature for households that occasionally or regularly carry six or seven people. Folding the rear rows also creates a much larger load area than the BMW can offer. Not every Kodiaq powertrain is available with seven seats, so seat count must be confirmed alongside the engine rather than assumed from the model name.

Which has more seats and usable passenger space?

The Kodiaq is the only choice of these two when a genuine third row is required. Its seven-seat versions can carry two additional passengers, although using all three rows leaves less luggage room. The cited seven-seat L&K specification has 340 litres with all rows in use. That is a manufacturer figure for a particular 2.0-litre petrol or diesel configuration, not a universal Kodiaq number.

The BMW accommodates up to five people and cannot be configured with a third row. If your normal use is one or two adults and occasional rear passengers, its compact body may be all the space you need. If you carry children, friends or work colleagues in two separate rear rows, only the Kodiaq meets that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the actual third-row pattern

  • Confirm that the chosen engine and trim are sold as a seven-seater in the UK.
  • Decide whether the third row will be occupied, folded or removed from your normal luggage calculation.
  • Check access to the rearmost seats and the resulting luggage space in the exact vehicle, because the published capacities vary by configuration.

Which has more boot space?

There is no single Kodiaq boot figure that applies to every version. In the cited seven-seat L&K, the boot is 340 litres with all three rows deployed and 2,035 litres when the rear rows are folded. The five-seat 1.5 TSI iV is listed at 745 litres with the seats up and 1,945 litres folded. Škoda’s UK boot-space page also lists 910 litres seats-up and 2,105 litres folded for a seven-seat 2.0 TSI configuration. Those differences illustrate why the engine, battery layout and seat arrangement must be attached to every capacity claim.

BMW UK lists 360 litres for the 220 M Sport and 430 litres for the M235 xDrive. The M235’s figure is larger than the 220’s, but both remain car-sized load bays rather than the Kodiaq’s folded-seat cargo volume. If you regularly transport bicycles, bulky pushchairs, flat-pack furniture or trade equipment, compare the opening shape and floor length in person as well as the quoted litres.

Use the capacity you will actually have

  • Seven people aboard: use the Kodiaq’s 340-litre seven-seat figure as the relevant starting point for the cited L&K, not the much larger folded figure.
  • Five seats and luggage: a five-seat Kodiaq configuration can provide 745 or 910 litres in the cited examples, depending on powertrain and specification.
  • Maximum load: the cited Kodiaq examples reach 1,945, 2,035 or 2,105 litres with the rear seating folded; BMW’s cited figures are 360 or 430 litres.

Powertrains, driven wheels and performance

BMW 220 M Sport

BMW UK’s current technical data for the 220 M Sport describes a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. System output is 170 hp and torque is 280 Nm. The car drives the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. BMW lists 0–62 mph in 7.9 seconds and 360 litres of luggage capacity for this version.

BMW M235 xDrive

The M235 xDrive is a fundamentally different proposition within the same body range. BMW UK lists 300 hp, 400 Nm, all-wheel drive, 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds and 430 litres of luggage capacity. Those figures make it the performance-oriented option, but they should not be read as proof that it rides, handles or costs less to run than a Kodiaq; no comparative road test or real-world cost dataset is established here.

Kodiaq engine spread

The cited Škoda UK L&K announcement covers several powertrains: a 204 PS petrol model, a 193 PS diesel and a 204 PS plug-in hybrid. The 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI L&K versions in that announcement use DSG transmission and 4×4. The 1.5 TSI iV is a five-seat DSG configuration. Because output, driven wheels, seats and boot volume are linked to the selected version, a fair comparison requires naming the exact Kodiaq engine and the exact BMW variant.

No matched Kodiaq acceleration figure is used here. It would be misleading to rank the cars’ performance by comparing BMW’s published 0–62 mph times with an unselected Kodiaq engine.

How drivetrain choice changes the decision

Front-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and plug-in hybrid operation answer different practical questions. The 220 M Sport is front-wheel drive, while the M235 xDrive and the cited 2.0-litre Kodiaq L&K models use all-wheel drive or 4×4. If traction on your usual roads is important, ask the dealer to confirm the exact system fitted to the vehicle you are pricing rather than assuming every version shares it.

The Kodiaq 1.5 TSI iV is a five-seat plug-in hybrid with a DSG gearbox. It may suit a buyer who can charge routinely and wants to use electric driving where practical, but the available specifications do not establish electric range, charging time or fuel consumption. Those figures should be checked for the exact model year and market before making a charging or emissions decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Similarly, the presence of 4×4 does not by itself establish towing capacity, off-road ability or lower running costs. If towing is essential, request the official maximum braked and unbraked trailer ratings, nose-weight limit and any licence or equipment requirements for the precise engine and trim. The figures available here do not provide a head-to-head towing result.

Footprint, parking and everyday usability

The BMW’s compact-car format can be a better match for tight parking spaces, narrow streets or buyers who simply prefer a smaller vehicle. The Kodiaq’s larger SUV body is justified when its extra seats and cargo flexibility are used. Neither conclusion requires assuming a particular ride or handling character; it is a question of the space you have at home and the jobs the car must do.

Before ordering, measure the garage or allocated bay, including door clearance and room to open the tailgate. At a viewing, sit in every row, test child-seat access if relevant and fold the seats in the combinations you will actually use. A headline litre figure cannot show whether a suitcase, pushchair or equipment case fits through the opening.

Price: why the published numbers do not produce a winner

BMW’s UK launch announcement listed the new-generation 2 Series Gran Coupé from £34,915 on the road and the M235 xDrive at £44,435. The announcement was made in 2024 for first customer deliveries from March 2025. It also noted that some technical and consumption figures were provisional and that parts of the release related to the German offer, so a current UK configurator remains the authority for equipment and pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Škoda’s UK announcement of the L&K range on 3 November 2025 listed £48,990 on the road for the 1.5 TSI iV, £51,540 for the 2.0 TSI 4×4 and £53,280 for the 2.0 TDI 4×4. These are higher-specification Kodiaq examples, not a direct match for BMW’s entry price. They also do not establish what either vehicle costs today, after model-year changes, dealer discounts, finance rates, taxes or options.

Build a like-for-like quote

  1. Choose the seat count first: five-seat Kodiaq or seven-seat Kodiaq.
  2. Select the powertrain and driven wheels you actually need, including whether a plug-in hybrid charging routine is practical.
  3. Match equipment such as driver assistance, navigation, upholstery, wheels and service packages.
  4. Request on-the-road prices for both vehicles on the same date and compare cash price, deposit, monthly payment, mileage allowance and final payment separately.
  5. Add insurance, fuel or electricity, servicing, tyres and tax before deciding that one list price is cheaper to own.

Running costs and ownership questions

No matched insurance quotes, servicing schedules, tyre costs, fuel bills or total-cost-of-ownership calculation is available for these two cars. Do not infer a cheaper ownership outcome from engine size, a mild-hybrid label, diesel availability or the presence of a plug-in system. Ask for written insurance quotations using the exact registration or specification, and obtain servicing and warranty terms from the relevant retailer.

For the plug-in Kodiaq, include the cost and convenience of home or public charging, the electricity tariff you would use and the journeys that can realistically be completed with charging. For the BMW M235 xDrive or a four-wheel-drive Kodiaq, check tyre replacement requirements and insurance on the exact vehicle rather than relying on the model name. Finance comparisons should show the same term, mileage allowance, deposit and optional final payment.

Which is better for a family?

Pick the Kodiaq when family flexibility is the priority

  • You need six or seven seats, even if only on some journeys.
  • You alternate between passengers and bulky loads and want to fold one or both rear rows.
  • You need the largest possible cargo volume among these two vehicles.
  • You are prepared to verify which engine and trim provide the desired seat count and 4×4 system.

The Kodiaq’s advantage is configurability, not a universal boot number. A seven-seat layout sacrifices luggage capacity when occupied, while the five-seat versions have different published capacities again.

Pick the BMW when compact-car priorities dominate

  • You want a four-door car rather than a large SUV.
  • Five seats are sufficient and your luggage needs fit a 360- or 430-litre boot.
  • You value having a distinctly faster, all-wheel-drive M235 xDrive option within the range.
  • Parking space, vehicle footprint or a preference for a lower car matters more than maximum cargo flexibility.

The available evidence does not establish that the BMW has superior ride comfort, handling, fuel economy or reliability. Those are separate questions that require current tests or ownership data.

Five-seat Kodiaq or seven-seat Kodiaq?

Requirement Most relevant configuration Published capacity or detail
Regularly carry seven people Seven-seat Kodiaq L&K, cited 2.0 TSI or 2.0 TDI 340 litres with all three rows deployed; 2,035 litres with rear rows folded
Five seats with a plug-in hybrid Five-seat 1.5 TSI iV 745 litres seats-up; 1,945 litres folded
Five seats and the largest cited Kodiaq load bay Seven-seat 2.0 TSI configuration used with rear row folded 910 litres seats-up; 2,105 litres folded, according to the UK boot-space listing
Compact five-seat alternative BMW 220 M Sport or M235 xDrive 360 litres for 220 M Sport; 430 litres for M235 xDrive

The table combines published examples from different specifications. It is a guide to how strongly configuration affects capacity, not a claim that every Kodiaq with the same seat count has the same volume.

Safety: what can and cannot be concluded

Euro NCAP material identifies an assessment page and a 2025 datasheet for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The available information does not establish a directly comparable result for the exact current Kodiaq configuration under the same protocol. Therefore, neither vehicle can be called safer on the basis of this comparison.

For a proper safety decision, check the exact model year, body and trim applicability, rating date, test protocol and scores for adult occupants, children, vulnerable road users and safety-assistance systems. Equipment can also vary by market and option pack, so a rating alone does not tell you whether the car on a dealer forecourt has every tested feature.

Practical buying checklist

  1. Count real passengers. If seven seats are a hard requirement, remove the BMW from the shortlist immediately.
  2. Measure the loads. Take the largest pushchair, case, instrument or equipment item to the dealer and test it behind the seats you will actually use.
  3. Match the drivetrain. Decide whether front-wheel drive, 4×4 or a plug-in hybrid fits your roads, charging access and towing needs; the cited material does not provide a towing comparison.
  4. Compare exact specifications. Write down engine, gearbox, driven wheels, seat count, trim, wheels and options before comparing prices.
  5. Check current UK availability. The quoted BMW and Škoda prices are dated announcements, not guaranteed 2026 retail prices.
  6. Separate evidence from preference. Manufacturer capacity and output figures are useful for sizing; ride quality, handling, reliability and real-world economy need independent, current evidence.

Bottom line for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé vs Škoda Kodiaq

The Kodiaq is the stronger fit for a family that needs a genuine seven-seat option or wants a dramatically larger folded-seat load space. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is the more coherent choice for a buyer who specifically wants a compact four-door car and does not need a third row; the M235 xDrive adds a 300 hp, all-wheel-drive performance variant that the Kodiaq comparison does not replicate.

Do not choose from the badge or an isolated litre figure. Select the exact seat layout, engine, drivetrain and trim, then obtain current like-for-like UK prices and inspect the vehicle with your passengers and luggage. That process resolves the real difference between these two otherwise unlike vehicles.

Which BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is quickest?

The BMW UK M235 xDrive is listed at 300 hp, 400 Nm and 0–62 mph in 4.9 seconds. The 220 M Sport is listed at 170 hp and 7.9 seconds to 62 mph.

Is the Kodiaq cheaper than the BMW?

The cited prices are not a fair current comparison. BMW’s 2024 UK launch announcement started at £34,915, while Škoda’s 3 November 2025 L&K examples ran from £48,990 to £53,280. Compare current equivalent trims, finance and running costs.

Does every Kodiaq have four-wheel drive?

No. The cited 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI L&K versions use DSG and 4×4, while the five-seat 1.5 TSI iV is a DSG configuration. Drivetrain depends on the selected version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Kodiaq plug-in hybrid available with seven seats?

The cited 1.5 TSI iV specification is five-seat. Check the current UK configurator for any later changes rather than assuming the plug-in hybrid has a third row.

Which car is safer?

A directly comparable result for the exact current versions under the same Euro NCAP protocol has not been established here. Check the applicable model year, rating date, test categories and equipment on the specific vehicle.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Kodiaq for seven seats and maximum cargo flexibility; choose the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé for a compact five-seat car, with the 300 hp M235 xDrive available. Verify the exact variant, current UK price, equipment and running costs before buying.
