There is no universal winner. Buy an Opel Diplomat B V8 if your priority is a full-size Opel flagship with a 5,354 cc Chevrolet V8 and 427 Nm of torque. Buy a Bitter SC if you want a later, hand-built luxury GT based on Senator A technology, with a choice of coupé, sedan and convertible bodies. In either case, the best purchase is the soundest, best-documented car you can find—not necessarily the one with the lower asking price.
The Diplomat B V8 is the direct technical ancestor of Bitter’s CD. The later SC is a separate project that followed Opel’s move to the Senator A platform after Diplomat production ended. That distinction matters when you assess performance, parts, rust risks and collectability.

These are related cars, not platform twins
“Opel Diplomat” covers several generations and body styles, so the comparison must be specific. The performance figures discussed here apply to the Diplomat B V8, built from 1969 to 1977. It was Opel’s flagship in the Kapitän–Admiral–Diplomat (KAD) family.
Bitter’s CD grew directly from that car. Bitter shortened the Diplomat chassis for the CD, retained a Chevrolet 327-cubic-inch V8, and worked with Baur on body panels, shell assembly, trim and running-gear integration. That makes the Diplomat B V8 the CD’s technical starting point.

The Bitter SC came later. After Opel stopped making the Diplomat in summer 1977, Bitter selected the Senator A as the SC’s technical basis. The SC is therefore a later Opel-six luxury GT rather than a continuation of the Diplomat V8 lineage. It was offered as a coupé, sedan and convertible, so two SCs can differ substantially in specification and use.
For a buyer, the choice is best understood as two different classic-GT experiences: a large Opel V8 sedan (or, in a separate and rarer discussion, a Diplomat coupé) versus a low-volume Bitter built around later Senator-era mechanicals.
Powertrain and performance differences
The numbers below are variant-specific. Do not apply the Diplomat B V8 figures to every Diplomat, or the SC 3.9 figures to every SC.

On paper, the Diplomat has the decisive torque advantage: 427 Nm versus 327 Nm for the cited SC 3.9. That points to relaxed, low-revving V8 thrust and suits a buyer who values engine character and flagship presence. The SC’s six-cylinder variants offer a different experience, and a manual-equipped car can feel more involving than an automatic, but the actual result depends on engine, gearbox, gearing and condition.

Do not turn these figures into a head-to-head acceleration claim. The sources do not provide consistent, independently measured tests for both models, and SC specifications vary by engine.
Which car fits your priorities?
Choose the Diplomat B V8 for V8 character and Opel flagship lineage
- You specifically want the largest engine and strongest documented torque in this comparison.
- You value the direct technical relationship to the Bitter CD.
- A full-size, traditionally proportioned Opel is more appealing than a later, lower-volume GT.
- You have access to a specialist who understands V8 mechanicals, body corrosion and period electrical systems.
The V8’s displacement and torque are the clearest paper reasons to choose it. They do not guarantee lower running costs or easier restoration: a neglected V8 Diplomat can consume more time and money than a properly maintained SC.
Choose the Bitter SC for later Senator-era engineering and body-style choice
- You prefer a later six-cylinder GT rather than a large-displacement V8.
- You want to choose among coupé, sedan and convertible forms.
- A five-speed manual is important, and you are willing to search for the less-common manual specification.
- You accept that SC condition, rust history and trim completeness vary enormously between cars.
Calling the SC “more modern” is only a period comparison with the Diplomat. It is not evidence that an SC is cheaper, easier to maintain or mechanically superior today.

Condition should decide the purchase
At this age, the badge is less important than the shell, repairs and records. A low-priced project can become the expensive car once corrosion, missing trim and deferred mechanical work are added. A KAD buying guide makes the qualitative point that paying more for good overall condition can be sensible because restoration generally costs more. It does not provide a universal restoration budget, and no reliable single figure applies to every car.

SC rust areas to investigate
Hagerty flags rust problems in roughly the first 100 SCs, described as using recycled Italian steel. It also notes continuing window-frame corrosion associated with window adhesive. These are inspection warnings, not proof that every SC has the same defect.
- Look for bubbling, swelling or mismatched texture around window frames and surrounds.
- Inspect floor sections, jacking points, sill seams and suspension mounting areas from below.
- Examine door bottoms, wheel arches, boot floor and the transitions between repaired and original metal.
- Use a paint-depth gauge and a bright inspection light to identify filler, uneven welds and poorly blended paint.
- Ask for photographs or invoices showing how rust was removed, not merely a statement that the car was “restored.”
Window glass and adhesive work can hide corrosion, so a marque-aware inspector should assess the actual car before you commit.
Diplomat body and parts risks
Availability depends on generation and body style. A separate guide to the Diplomat A V8 Coupé reports that some sedan body items can be found through enthusiast contacts, while coupé-specific panels may be difficult or unavailable and could require costly fabrication. It also says engine and transmission repair supply is comparatively easier. That information concerns the A Coupé, not verified Diplomat B availability; use it only as a warning that rare coachwork can dominate a restoration.

A pre-purchase inspection sequence
Use the same process for both models, then add model-specific checks. Do not rely on photographs or a short seller test drive for a complex, low-volume classic.
- Verify identity. Match the VIN, chassis plates, engine number where available, body style and production details to the registration and historical records. Confirm that a supposed Diplomat is the B V8 variant before using V8 specifications in your valuation.
- Review the paper trail. Request ownership history, service invoices, restoration photographs, inspection certificates and records of engine, gearbox, suspension and brake work. Date and mileage inconsistencies should be resolved before negotiations.
- Inspect the exterior in daylight. Check panel gaps, shut lines, paint texture, colour consistency and signs of accident repair. A recent repaint is not automatically good or bad; the quality and corrosion preparation underneath matter.
- Examine the underside. Put the car on a lift. Check floors, sills, jacking points, subframes, suspension mounts, brake and fuel lines, and any underseal that could conceal fresh corrosion.
- Give SC window areas special attention. Inspect the glass surrounds, frame edges and adhesive channels for rust or distortion. Ask exactly when the glass was removed and what metalwork was performed.
- Assess the drivetrain cold. The engine should start from cold for your inspection. Note oil pressure, smoke, noises, coolant condition, leaks, charging voltage and idle quality. On a V8, confirm that cooling and fuel systems have been maintained rather than assuming displacement equals reliability.
- Test the transmission and driveline. Check clutch take-up on a manual, shift quality and kickdown on an automatic, differential noise, driveshaft vibration and operation of reverse. A road test should include cold, warm and hot conditions.
- Check steering, suspension and brakes. Look for play, uneven ride height, pulling under braking, fluid leaks and aged rubber components. A car that tracks straight on a smooth road can still need a full suspension refresh.
- Inventory every unique part. Record missing lamps, trim, wheels, instruments, seats, glass, badges and interior fittings. Price or locate replacements before treating the asking price as a bargain.
- Commission an independent report. Use a specialist familiar with Opel KAD cars and Bitter conversions. Make the sale conditional on reviewing the written report and any estimate for structural or mechanical work.
Use a condition score instead of a badge premium
A simple worksheet keeps emotion out of the comparison. Score each candidate from 0 (unknown or serious defect) to 3 (documented and sound), then investigate any zero before making an offer.

What the recent market records do—and do not—tell you
Classic.com records a 1984 Bitter SC sold for $20,000 on June 23, 2025 and a 1985 SC sold for $17,208 on May 27, 2025. These are two completed transactions, not an average, price guide or guaranteed current value. Condition, mileage, originality, location, currency and sale venue can make two apparently similar SCs worth very different amounts.

The same record set includes a $55,000 1976 Bitter CD Diplomat 5400 V8 sale on April 2, 2023. That is a CD result, not a Diplomat B sedan price and not a current offer for either model in this comparison. Older project-car results on the same platform further demonstrate why a single low sale cannot establish a bargain.

No genuinely like-for-like, current transaction pair establishes that the SC is more expensive than the Diplomat, or vice versa. Do not claim a percentage premium, a fixed restoration budget or a universal current price range without refreshing sales for the relevant country and matching condition.
How to compare two cars at the negotiating stage
- Collect at least three recent completed sales or credible dealer records for the same body style and engine family in the same broad market.
- Separate completed sales from asking prices. An unsold advertisement is evidence of an owner’s expectation, not market value.
- Adjust for rust repairs, missing trim, gearbox type, originality, documentation and recent mechanical work.
- Obtain written estimates for immediate safety work and known restoration needs. Keep cosmetic improvements separate from structural repairs.
- Subtract those costs from the price you are prepared to pay, while retaining a contingency for faults that an inspection cannot fully expose.
- Walk away if the seller will not permit a lift inspection, cold start or document review. Scarcity does not remove the need for due diligence.
Ownership realities after purchase
Specialist support matters more than the brochure
Both cars are old, uncommon and assembled around components that may not be stocked by ordinary repair shops. Before buying, identify a workshop willing to work on the specific engine, transmission and electrical system. Ask whether it can fabricate or restore trim and body pieces, not just service mechanical parts.
Budget for completeness, not only running condition
A car that starts and moves can still need seals, hoses, wiring repairs, brake hydraulics, suspension bushes, cooling-system work, tyres and interior restoration. Missing model-specific glass or brightwork can delay a project longer than an engine repair. Build your ownership plan around the actual inspection report and parts inventory.

Discuss agreed-value or other classic-car insurance options with providers that serve your location and the car’s intended use. Eligibility, mileage limits, storage requirements and valuation rules vary by country and policy; obtain the terms in writing rather than assuming a normal daily-driver policy is suitable.
Verdict: buy the right example, then the right model
The Opel Diplomat B V8 is the better buy for a buyer who wants maximum displacement, 427 Nm of torque and the direct Opel flagship lineage behind the Bitter CD. The Bitter SC is the better buy for someone who prefers a later Senator-based GT, a six-cylinder character and a choice of coupé, sedan or convertible body styles.
Neither choice is a guaranteed bargain. Inspect corrosion repairs—especially SC window-frame areas—verify originality and documentation, account for missing trim, and compare the individual car with condition-matched sales in your market. A sound, complete example at a higher price can be financially wiser than a cheap project whose restoration needs are still unknown.
