Billionaire Frank Stronach was charged with sexual assault in Ontario in 2024, but the case has since changed: one reported indecent-assault conviction remained after a July 2026 mistrial on his sexual-assault conviction, while a separate Newmarket jury trial was scheduled for May 2027 as of August 13, 2026.
The latest reporting reviewed does not support saying that Stronach currently has two convictions, that the sexual-assault conviction was overturned on appeal or that all 18 reported offences remain active. Sentencing on the remaining conviction was reported for September 2026, but the exact date and any decision on a retrial should be confirmed against the Ontario court record.

What happened to billionaire Frank Stronach after he was charged with sexual assault?
Frank Stronach’s case expanded from five charges announced in June 2024 into multiple court files, followed by a Toronto trial, two June 2026 guilty findings, a July mistrial affecting one of those findings and a separate Newmarket trial scheduled for 2027.
June 7, 2024: Initial arrest and five charges
According to Peel Regional Police’s announcement as reported on June 7, 2024, Stronach was arrested in Ontario and charged with rape, indecent assault on a female, forcible confinement and two counts of sexual assault. The five charges allegedly involved more than one victim and incidents spanning multiple decades. Stronach, who was reported as 91 at the time, was released on conditions, and the allegations had not been tested in court. Read the CityNews report on the June 7, 2024 charges.
June 26, 2024: Additional allegations and charges
Peel police announced additional charges after investigators identified more alleged victims. A later Canadian Press account described the overall file as 18 offences involving 13 complainants. The figure of 18 refers to the broader case as reported; it should not be treated as a current count of active charges, because the proceedings were divided into separate court files and the Toronto trial involved a narrower set. CityNews reported the additional charges; CHCH carried the later Canadian Press account of the broader case.

The proceedings were separated into a Toronto matter and a Newmarket matter. In the Toronto file, a preliminary inquiry resulted in Stronach being committed to stand trial on charges related to two complainants, according to the Canadian Press reporting reviewed. The second file proceeded on its own timetable rather than becoming part of the Toronto verdict.
February to June 2026: Toronto judge-alone trial
The Toronto trial took place before Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy without a jury. The trial file initially involved 12 charges and seven complainants, according to Canadian Press reporting. By closing arguments, prosecutors had withdrawn one charge and agreed that Stronach should be found not guilty on four others. Justice Molloy also said the evidence did not meet the criminal standard for conviction on two charges associated with another complainant. CityNews summarized the Toronto trial and ruling.

June 19, 2026: Two guilty findings
On June 19, 2026, Justice Molloy found Stronach guilty of sexual assault involving a former employee and the historical offence of indecent assault involving a woman who said she encountered him at Rooney’s in the 1970s. Justice Molloy found him not guilty on the other charges addressed in the Toronto decision. Associated Press and Canadian Press reporting described Stronach as 93 at the time of the verdict. Associated Press reported the June 19 verdict.
Justice Molloy said the age of the allegations did not lower the criminal burden of proof. In the reported ruling, she wrote: The fact that memories are faulty and particulars are missing, while understandable, does not change the standard of proof.
The quotation was reported by CityNews and The Canadian Press.

July 17, 2026: Mistrial on the sexual-assault conviction
On July 17, 2026, a judge granted a mistrial on the Toronto sexual-assault conviction after Stronach’s lawyer presented emails from the complainant’s civil lawyer. The defence argued that the emails conflicted with testimony given at the criminal trial. The reporting reviewed stated that the court did not hear from the complainant before the mistrial was declared. CityNews reported the post-verdict mistrial.
The latest reporting reviewed said the ruling left one indecent-assault conviction. The reporting did not establish whether prosecutors will seek a retrial on the sexual-assault count. The reporting also did not establish that the underlying allegation was false or that Stronach had won an appeal.

September 2026: Reported sentencing date
CityNews and Associated Press reporting stated that sentencing on the remaining indecent-assault conviction was scheduled for September 2026. The precise hearing date and any adjournment should be checked against the Ontario court record immediately before publication, because the date was reported before the July mistrial ruling and the case remains active. The July 17 CityNews report included the reported sentencing timetable.
May 2027: Separate Newmarket jury trial
The separate Newmarket trial was postponed from 2026 to May 2027. The proceeding is expected to be a jury trial lasting approximately four weeks, with motions scheduled beforehand. The allegations in that file remain unresolved; a future trial date is not a finding of guilt. CHCH reported the May 2027 postponement and expected trial length.
What did the July 2026 mistrial change?
The mistrial changed the reported status of the Toronto sexual-assault finding, but it did not amount to an acquittal, an exoneration or an appeal reversal. Before July 17, 2026, the Toronto court had reported guilty findings on sexual assault and historical indecent assault. After the mistrial ruling, the latest reporting reviewed described only one remaining conviction: the historical indecent-assault conviction.
The defence relied on emails from the complainant’s civil lawyer and argued that the messages were inconsistent with the complainant’s criminal-trial testimony. The available reports describe the judge’s decision as a mistrial and do not say whether the Crown will retry the affected count. The reports also do not establish that the mistrial resolved the factual dispute in favour of either side. Global News reported the defence position and the rare mistrial ruling.
Stronach’s lawyer Leora Shemesh described the post-verdict ruling as incredibly rare
. That characterization describes the procedural event; it is not a finding about the truth or falsity of the allegation. CityNews reported Shemesh’s statement.

Was Frank Stronach convicted?
Yes, the Toronto proceeding produced two guilty findings on June 19, 2026, but the latest reporting reviewed says only one conviction remained after the July 17 mistrial. The remaining reported conviction is for historical indecent assault, not sexual assault. Sentencing on that conviction was reported as scheduled for September 2026, subject to confirmation of the exact court date.
| Date | Reported Toronto result | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| June 19, 2026 | Guilty findings for sexual assault and historical indecent assault | Two guilty findings were announced at the Toronto verdict |
| July 17, 2026 | Mistrial declared on the sexual-assault conviction | Do not describe the sexual-assault finding as a current conviction based on the latest reporting reviewed |
| After July 17, 2026 | One reported indecent-assault conviction remained | Do not say Stronach currently has two convictions |
How many charges does Frank Stronach still face?
The reporting reviewed does not support a reliable single total of currently active charges. The broader case was later described as 18 offences involving 13 complainants, but that number includes the proceedings as a whole and should not be presented as 18 charges still pending.
The Toronto trial file initially involved 12 charges and seven complainants, then produced acquittals, a withdrawn charge, guilty findings and a later mistrial affecting one conviction. The separate Newmarket file has unresolved allegations and a scheduled trial, but the dossier does not provide a current charge total for that proceeding. The accurate answer is therefore procedural rather than numerical: one reported Toronto conviction remained, and a separate Newmarket case was still awaiting trial.
What is the difference between the Toronto and Newmarket cases?
The Toronto case had already gone through a judge-alone trial and had one reported indecent-assault conviction remaining after the mistrial. The Newmarket case is a separate proceeding involving unresolved allegations that are scheduled to be heard by a jury in May 2027.

Stronach has denied the allegations. In 2024, his lawyer Brian Greenspan said Stronach categorically denies the allegations of impropriety which have been brought against him.
Daily Racing Form reported the 2024 statement.

That denial should be included when describing the unresolved allegations in the separate Newmarket proceeding. The remaining Toronto conviction is an adjudicated court result and should not be described merely as an allegation. Conversely, the Newmarket allegations should not be described as established conduct before trial.
How should the current case be described accurately?
The safest description depends on which part of the case is being discussed. Charges are allegations until adjudicated; a conviction is a court finding; an acquittal is different from a mistrial; and the reports reviewed do not establish an appellate reversal of the sexual-assault conviction.
| Accurate wording | Why it is accurate |
|---|---|
| One reported indecent-assault conviction remained after the July 17, 2026 mistrial | This reflects the latest reporting reviewed without claiming two current convictions |
| A separate Newmarket jury trial was scheduled for May 2027 | The Newmarket allegations remain unresolved |
| A mistrial was declared on the Toronto sexual-assault conviction | The reported procedure was a mistrial, not an appeal reversal |
| The broader case was reported as 18 offences involving 13 complainants | The figure is attributed to Canadian Press court reporting in 2026 and is not presented as the current active total |
Descriptions should not identify complainants where publication bans or privacy protections apply. A mistrial should not be used to imply that a complainant fabricated an allegation, and the original 2024 charges should not be presented as though every charge remains active.
