Trump Defended Elon Musk, Called the Tesla Boycott “Illegal,” and Pledged to Buy a Tesla

Trump’s White House Tesla appearance was a public defense of Elon Musk, but the evidence does not show that a single liberal boycott tanked Tesla. Here’s how politics, production, competition, and later delivery data fit together.

Short answer: Donald Trump did defend Elon Musk and say he would buy a new Tesla, but his claim that a “liberal” boycott was illegal and responsible for Tesla’s decline went further than the available evidence supports.

Trump’s March 11, 2025 intervention came after Tesla’s share price had fallen sharply and as the company faced protests, political backlash against Musk, an aging vehicle lineup, intense competition, and production disruption caused by the global Model Y changeover. Peacefully refusing to buy Tesla or urging others to do the same is generally protected political expression. Tesla’s later delivery rebound also makes it impossible to describe the episode as a single-cause, permanently “tanked” boycott story.

What Trump said about Tesla and Elon Musk

Early on March 11, 2025, Trump posted on Truth Social that what he called “Radical Left Lunatics” were trying to “illegally and collusively boycott Tesla” in an effort to hurt Musk and the company.

Trump then said he would buy “a brand new Tesla” as a public show of confidence in Musk. The statement was political as well as commercial: it was an attempt to defend Musk, counter negative attention around Tesla, and signal that Trump believed the company was being unfairly targeted.

The timing mattered. Rolling Stone reported that Tesla shares had fallen 15% on March 10 and were down more than 50% from their late-December peak at the time. That was a dramatic market move, but a stock decline is not the same thing as proof that customers had stopped buying cars because of a boycott. Share prices incorporate expectations about future earnings, investor sentiment, company fundamentals, interest rates, competition, and broader economic conditions.

What happened at the White House

Later on March 11, Trump and Musk appeared with several Tesla vehicles on the White House grounds. The official White House transcript says Trump intended to purchase a Tesla because he considered it a strong product and believed Musk had been treated unfairly.

The transcript also gives more detail than the phrase “a new Tesla” suggests:

  • The vehicle Trump entered was identified as a Tesla Model S Plaid.
  • Trump said the vehicle would remain at the White House and be used by staff.
  • He said he had not driven for a long time and was not permitted to drive.
  • When asked whether his purchase would help Tesla sales and its stock, Trump said he hoped it would.

That exchange makes the appearance an overt public-relations and confidence gesture, not an ordinary private vehicle purchase. It also does not establish that Trump completed the purchase, that he ordered the exact Model S Plaid he entered, or that the event produced a measurable increase in sales or share value.

Was boycotting Tesla actually illegal?

Not as a blanket proposition. Trump’s description treated the boycott itself as unlawful, but the general First Amendment framework does not support saying that every peaceful Tesla boycott is illegal.

In the United States, a person can generally decide not to purchase a product for political reasons. People can also generally criticize a company or public figure and encourage others to avoid that company. Political boycotts may receive constitutional protection when they involve speech, assembly, association, or petition, particularly when the conduct is nonviolent.

That protection is not unlimited. Conduct associated with a protest or boycott can become separately unlawful if it involves:

  • Vandalism, arson, assault, or other property crimes;
  • Threats or violence against employees, owners, customers, or other people;
  • Fraud, extortion, harassment, or unlawful interference with a business;
  • Commercial coordination that violates a separate law.

The legally careful distinction is therefore: peacefully declining to buy Tesla, urging others not to buy it, or criticizing Musk is generally protected expression; criminal acts or independently unlawful coordination are not made legal simply by calling themselves a boycott. The available evidence does not justify saying that the U.S. government made boycotting Tesla illegal or that every protest-related incident was part of a lawful consumer campaign.

Did the boycott tank Tesla?

The evidence supports a more limited conclusion: backlash against Musk’s politics plausibly hurt Tesla’s brand and may have contributed to weaker demand, but it was not shown to be the sole cause of the company’s stock decline or delivery decline.

Evidence What it shows What it does not prove
Tesla shares fell 15% on March 10, 2025 Investors were reassessing Tesla sharply at that point That a consumer boycott alone caused the move
336,681 deliveries in the first quarter of 2025 Tesla experienced a significant delivery period amid political and operational pressure How many sales were lost specifically because of politics
Production changeovers at all four factories The Model Y transition caused several weeks of lost production That every delivery shortfall reflected weak customer demand
Later deliveries rose 25% year over year in a three-month period reported in July 2026 The downturn was not a permanent, one-directional collapse That the earlier brand damage never occurred or that politics had no effect

Tesla’s first-quarter delivery numbers

Tesla’s April 2, 2025 filing reported 336,681 total vehicle deliveries for the first quarter. That included 323,800 Model 3 and Model Y deliveries and 12,881 deliveries of other models.

The same filing said that production-line changeovers for the new Model Y took place at all four of Tesla’s factories and caused several weeks of lost production. It also said the new Model Y was still ramping. Those details matter because deliveries are affected by both demand and the company’s ability to produce and ship the vehicles customers want.

Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K had already identified several risks that could affect demand and profitability. They included cyclical automotive demand, inflation, interest rates, political and regulatory uncertainty, competition, tariffs, supply constraints, and production ramps. The filing specifically anticipated disruption during the first quarter of 2025 as Tesla launched the new Model Y worldwide.

Evidence of political backlash

There was nevertheless evidence consistent with a political effect. Reuters reported that Tesla’s first-quarter deliveries fell 13% year over year and described the decline as the result of several factors, including backlash against Musk’s politics, stronger competition, and an aging product lineup. Reuters also reported steep declines in several European markets.

That supports saying Musk’s political activity was plausibly one contributor. It does not establish that one centrally organized “liberal boycott” caused the entire decline. Consumers can respond to a CEO’s politics in many ways: some may actively boycott, some may delay a purchase, some may choose another brand, and others may remain interested in the product but reject the company’s public image. Those behaviors are difficult to separate using delivery totals alone.

A 2026 peer-reviewed study of the Tesla Takedown movement reached a similar broad interpretation. It concluded that the sales deterioration after Musk’s political alignment appeared to reflect brand aversion among Democratic consumers outweighing new affinity for Tesla among Republican consumers. That is evidence of a partisan consumer effect, but it remains an analytical interpretation rather than proof that every sales decline was caused by boycott activity.

Why Tesla’s downturn had multiple causes

  1. Musk’s political association changed the brand. Musk became closely associated with the Trump administration and conservative politics. That created a reputational problem for a company whose customer base and environmental branding had historically attracted many liberal and environmentally minded buyers.
  2. Tesla faced an aging lineup. Tesla’s core products were no longer operating in the same competitive environment as when the Model 3 and Model Y had fewer direct alternatives. New electric vehicles from established automakers and other EV manufacturers gave buyers more choices.
  3. The Model Y transition disrupted supply. Reworking production lines at four factories meant that Tesla temporarily sacrificed output while introducing the updated Model Y. A production interruption can depress deliveries even when underlying demand is not changing by the same amount.
  4. Economic and industry conditions mattered. Interest rates, inflation, tariffs, supply issues, cyclical vehicle demand, and uncertainty about regulation can affect both the affordability of a vehicle and investor expectations for the company.
  5. The stock market moved faster than the sales data. Investors often price in expected future weakness before quarterly deliveries are reported. A share-price decline can reflect concern about future margins, brand damage, management distraction, or competition rather than a directly measured number of canceled orders.

This is why “Trump says a boycott tanked Tesla” is a political claim, not a complete business diagnosis. The available data can support a contribution model, not a single-cause verdict.

What happened after the 2025 controversy?

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K is the primary source for the company’s reported financial and operational results for the year ended December 31, 2025, as well as its stated risks and product strategy. It is more reliable for those company-specific disclosures than retrospective political commentary, although company filings naturally present management’s own account.

By July 2026, Tesla reported 480,126 deliveries for the preceding three-month period, compared with 384,122 in the same period a year earlier—a 25% increase. The Washington Post and the Associated Press described the rebound as a possible sign that the worst of the Musk-related backlash had eased. They also noted that U.S. sales remained weak according to Cox Automotive estimates.

The later rebound changes the interpretation of the original episode in two ways. First, it argues against describing the 2025 decline as a permanent collapse caused by one boycott. Second, it does not erase the possibility that Musk’s politics damaged the brand among some customers or contributed to the earlier weakness. Both statements can be true: a brand can suffer political backlash and later recover deliveries as product availability, pricing, competition, production, or consumer sentiment changes.

What can—and cannot—be said accurately

The strongest defensible summary is that Trump publicly backed Musk during a period of Tesla weakness, labeled the opposition an illegal boycott, and announced an intended Tesla purchase. The White House event featured a Model S Plaid, and Trump openly hoped the gesture would help Tesla’s sales and stock.

It is also accurate to say that peaceful political boycotts are generally protected expression and that Tesla’s subsequent results point to multiple causes for its difficulties. Political backlash was plausibly part of the story, but the available evidence does not isolate it from model-transition disruption, competition, an aging lineup, macroeconomic pressures, or other company risks.

What should not be claimed is that the U.S. government outlawed a Tesla boycott, that the boycott alone caused the stock or delivery declines, that Trump’s announcement measurably boosted Tesla, or that Trump definitely completed the purchase. The official record supports an announced intention and a public demonstration—not a verified sales result.

Source note

This article draws on Trump’s March 11, 2025 Truth Social post and contemporaneous archived reporting; the official White House transcript of the March 11 vehicle appearance; Tesla’s April 2, 2025 delivery filing; Tesla’s 2024 and 2025 annual filings; reporting from Rolling Stone and Reuters; later reporting from the Associated Press and Washington Post; and a 2026 peer-reviewed study of the Tesla Takedown movement. Where those sources establish correlation or competing explanations rather than causation, the language above preserves that uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Donald Trump actually buy the Tesla he announced?

The official White House transcript records Trump’s intention to purchase a Tesla and says the vehicle would remain at the White House for staff use. The available record does not establish that the purchase was completed, nor does it confirm that the Model S Plaid he entered was the exact vehicle ordered.

Was the Tesla boycott illegal?

A peaceful decision not to buy Tesla, public criticism of Musk, or encouragement to avoid the company is generally protected political expression in the United States. Vandalism, arson, threats, assault, unlawful interference, or other independently illegal conduct can still be prosecuted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did Musk’s politics cause Tesla’s sales decline?

Political backlash was plausibly one contributor, and reporting found evidence consistent with a brand effect. But Tesla also faced competition, an aging lineup, Model Y production changeovers, macroeconomic pressures, tariffs, and other risks. The available delivery data cannot assign the entire decline to a boycott.

Which Tesla model was shown at the White House?

The official transcript identifies the vehicle Trump entered as a Tesla Model S Plaid. Several Tesla vehicles were displayed, so that identification does not necessarily mean the exact car shown was the one Trump ultimately intended to purchase.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Trump’s Tesla appearance was a public confidence gesture for Musk, not proof that a boycott was illegal or that it single-handedly destroyed Tesla’s business. Political backlash likely mattered, but production disruption, competition, product age, economic conditions, and investor expectations also mattered—and Tesla later reported a substantial delivery rebound.
