Short answer: an electric vehicle can be a larger, less expensive source of backup energy than a dedicated home battery, but only when the vehicle, bidirectional charger, electrical equipment, utility rules and warranty all support vehicle-to-home (V2H) operation. A stationary battery costs more as a dedicated installation in some cases, yet it is always at the house, can be sized for a known power requirement and does not depend on the car being parked and charged.
A normal one-way Level 2 charger cannot make an EV a home battery. V2H needs a compatible vehicle, bidirectional power equipment and a transfer or islanding arrangement that disconnects the home safely from the utility during an outage. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is related but different: it exports energy to the utility grid and may require additional interconnection approval.

What bidirectional EV charging actually means
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory defines bidirectional charging as EV charging “where the flow of electricity can move both from the grid to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the grid.” In ordinary charging, electricity flows only into the vehicle. Bidirectional hardware adds a controlled path back out.

Vehicle-to-home (V2H)
V2H sends energy from the vehicle to the house, or to a selected backed-up panel. During a utility outage, the system must isolate the home from the grid before energizing household circuits. National Grid describes the arrangement this way: “V2H requires a slightly less sophisticated charger or vehicle, as a transfer switch is used to safely disconnect your home from the grid.”

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
V2G exports power beyond the home to the utility network. It can support demand response or other grid programs, but it normally involves utility interconnection rules, approved equipment and a program that actually pays for the service. The available guidance does not establish a universal V2G payment, payback period or revenue level.
Vehicle-to-load (V2L)
Some EVs can run appliances through an outlet or adapter. V2L is useful at a campsite or for a single tool, but it is not the same as safely powering a home’s wiring. A V2H installation requires a listed transfer or isolation system and electrical work appropriate to the service panel.
Can an EV replace a home battery?
It can replace some of the energy function, not automatically the entire storage system. An EV may carry tens of kilowatt-hours more than a typical residential battery, but it is mobile. The vehicle has to be at home, connected to the bidirectional equipment and charged above whatever reserve you set for driving. A stationary battery remains on the property and is available whenever the home needs it.

| Question | Bidirectional EV (V2H) | Stationary home battery |
|---|---|---|
| Where the energy is stored | In the vehicle’s traction battery | In a battery permanently installed at the property |
| Availability | Only when the compatible EV is present and sufficiently charged | Available at the home at all times |
| Energy capacity | Potentially large; depends on the exact EV and usable reserve | Selected when the system is designed; NREL’s 2024 ATB uses 12.5 kWh as a representative modeled residential case |
| Power capacity | Limited by the vehicle, bidirectional charger and home’s electrical equipment | Specified by the battery inverter and system design; NREL’s representative case uses 5 kW |
| Mobility | The battery travels with the car | Fixed at the home |
| Driving reserve | Requires a reserve setting so backup use does not strand the vehicle | No driving requirement |
| Utility interaction | V2H may need an outage-isolation approval; V2G generally needs export interconnection | May require permitting and utility approval, especially for grid export |
The 5 kW/12.5 kWh figures are NREL’s representative modeling assumptions, compiled in June 2024. They are not a recommended system size or a retail installed price.
How long can an EV power a home during an outage?
Runtime depends on usable battery energy, the home’s average load, the maximum output of the charger and inverter, conversion losses, the reserve left for driving and which circuits are backed up. A simple planning estimate is:
Runtime in days ≈ usable energy in kWh ÷ household energy use per day in kWh.

National Grid illustrates the scale with a 75 kWh EV battery and average U.S. home use of 30 kWh per day. Dividing those numbers gives 2.5 days before accounting for reserve, conversion losses or changing loads. National Grid notes that conservation could allow multi-day support while leaving some energy for driving. That example is not a guarantee for every EV or home.
What changes the result
- Usable, not advertised, capacity: the vehicle may reserve part of its pack, and the V2H system may impose another minimum state of charge.
- Large loads: electric resistance heating, central air conditioning, water heaters, ovens, pumps and EV charging can consume energy quickly or exceed the system’s instantaneous power rating.
- Backed-up circuits: a critical-loads panel can support refrigeration, lighting, communications, outlets and a gas-furnace blower without carrying every household circuit.
- Weather and occupancy: heating or cooling demand can make a daily average much higher than a mild-weather estimate.
- Driving needs: a household that must leave during the outage needs a larger reserve than one sheltering in place.
Power versus energy
Energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), determines how long loads can run. Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), determines how much can run at the same time. A battery with ample kWh can still trip or shut down if simultaneous appliances exceed its kW output. Ask an installer for both the continuous and surge output and compare them with the starting requirements of pumps, compressors and heating equipment.
What does a V2H charger cost?
Published figures cover different scopes, so they are not a like-for-like market comparison.
| Source and date | Figure | What it covers | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Grid guidance, 2024 | $6,000–$10,000, plus installation | Broad V2H/V2G equipment range | Organization-level guidance; it does not specify one product bundle, panel work, permits or every installation condition |
| National Grid comparison, 2024 | $500–$1,500, plus installation | Standard Level 2 charger equipment | One-way charging equipment is not a substitute for a bidirectional system |
| Manufacturer Powershare Home Backup guidance, accessed 2026 | $1,990 hardware; standard installation starts at $1,800–$2,200 | A specific manufacturer’s hardware and stated standard-installation starting range | Manufacturer-specific example, not a general market quote; nonstandard electrical work can change the total |
A complete quote may also include a transfer switch or gateway, backed-up load panel, wiring, conduit, service upgrades, utility interconnection, permits, inspection and labor. Request each item separately so an equipment-only number is not mistaken for an installed price.
How stationary home-battery costs are determined
Stationary storage is priced by both power and energy, then by the balance-of-system work around it. NREL’s 2024 Annual Technology Baseline models a representative 5 kW / 12.5 kWh residential system. Its cost model separates the battery pack, inverter, labor, engineering, permitting and interconnection, sales and marketing, overhead and profit. Because that is a modeling case compiled in June 2024, it should not be treated as a current consumer quote or as the right size for a particular house.
Why a smaller battery can cost more than expected
A system still needs an inverter, controls, disconnects, protective equipment and installation even when its kWh capacity is modest. Conversely, adding energy capacity may not increase the home’s maximum kW output. Compare the usable kWh, continuous and surge kW, warranty conditions and included electrical work rather than comparing battery names or pack capacity alone.

Compatibility and safety requirements
Vehicle and charger compatibility
Check the exact model year, trim, battery configuration and software version with the vehicle manufacturer. “The EV supports bidirectional charging” is not sufficient: the vehicle, connector, charger, inverter and control software must be approved to operate together. Ask whether the system supports backup-only V2H, grid export or both.
Home electrical configuration
The installer must determine whether the service panel, feeder, grounding, disconnects and backed-up circuits can accept the equipment. A transfer switch or equivalent islanding device prevents power from feeding an outage line and protects utility workers. Never improvise a connection through a receptacle or a homemade backfeed cable.
Utility and permitting
National Grid says it handles V2H/V2G applications through processes similar to solar or home-battery applications. Your utility and local authority having jurisdiction may require a single-line diagram, equipment certifications, inspection and an interconnection agreement. Rules vary by location, and V2G export can trigger requirements that V2H backup does not.

National Grid cautions that manufacturers may limit how much energy can be drawn without affecting warranty terms. Obtain the vehicle-specific warranty language in writing, including whether repeated stationary discharge, grid export, minimum state-of-charge settings and use of a third-party charger are covered. Do not assume that a battery warranty for driving automatically covers home backup cycles.
How to evaluate a V2H proposal step by step
- List the loads you actually need. Record starting and running watts for refrigeration, heating, medical equipment, pumps, lights, networking and cooking. Decide whether you want a critical-loads panel or whole-home backup.
- Estimate daily energy. Use utility bills, smart-meter data or appliance measurements. Separate normal use from outage-only loads and include seasonal heating or cooling.
- Confirm the EV’s supported functions. Ask the manufacturer for bidirectional output limits, minimum reserve, compatible equipment, software requirements and warranty treatment.
- Check where the car is parked. V2H is useful only if the vehicle can reach the charger during an outage and is normally present when backup is needed.
- Obtain a fully scoped electrical quote. Require hardware, labor, transfer equipment, panel changes, permits, utility fees, inspection and taxes to be listed separately.
- Submit utility and permit applications before purchase. Written approval can reveal export restrictions or equipment-list requirements that affect the design.
- Test the system. With the installer, simulate a grid outage, verify that isolation occurs, confirm which circuits remain energized and check that the vehicle retains its driving reserve.
When bidirectional EV charging is the better fit
You already own a compatible long-range EV
If the vehicle is paid for and usually sits at home overnight, V2H can add substantial backup energy without buying another large battery pack. The relevant comparison is the incremental V2H installation cost, not the full cost of an EV you would purchase for transportation anyway.
Your outage goal is energy-intensive
A larger usable EV pack may support several days of conservative operation where a small stationary battery would require load shedding or a generator. This advantage matters most when the home’s critical loads need more than a few hours of storage.

The home needs backup regardless of the car’s location
A stationary system is ready during a daytime outage, an unexpected trip or a situation in which the EV is away. It also avoids using transportation energy for household loads.
You want a known, dedicated power design
Installers can size a stationary inverter and battery around the home’s critical circuits, solar array or generator. The system does not depend on a particular vehicle remaining compatible for its service life.
The EV is not approved for bidirectional operation
Ownership of an EV alone does not create a V2H option. If the model, software, charger or utility approval is missing, a stationary battery is the practical storage path.
Trade-offs beyond the purchase price
| Factor | V2H trade-off | Stationary battery trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Transportation and backup conflict | Using energy at home can reduce driving range unless a reserve is protected | Does not affect vehicle range |
| Battery cycling | Additional discharge cycles may be subject to vehicle warranty or manufacturer limits | Designed and warranted for stationary cycling, subject to its own terms |
| Resilience | High potential energy capacity but dependent on vehicle presence and charge | Predictable availability but capacity may be smaller unless more modules are installed |
| Expansion | Usually tied to the vehicle and approved charger; adding another EV may not simply double home output | Some systems allow additional battery modules, subject to inverter limits and approvals |
| Grid services | May participate in demand response or V2G where a utility program exists; compensation is not universal | May also support demand management or solar self-consumption, depending on controls and tariffs |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a portable outlet with home backup
An appliance outlet or V2L adapter can run individual devices. It does not authorize energizing household wiring. Use listed transfer equipment installed by a qualified electrician.
Comparing equipment-only and installed prices
Keep hardware, labor, panel work, permits and utility charges in separate columns. The $1,990 hardware example and the $6,000–$10,000 equipment guidance describe different scopes.

Ignoring peak loads
Calculate compressor and motor starting demand, not only average kWh. A system may have enough energy for a refrigerator but still need suitable surge output to start it.
Assuming every outage is a V2G opportunity
V2H backup and V2G export have different controls and approvals. Do not count on utility payments until a named program, tariff and enrollment agreement specify the rate and operating rules.
Skipping a driving reserve
Set a reserve that reflects the next trip, weather and charging availability. A battery-full-at-midnight plan may be unusable if the vehicle must leave before the grid returns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs bidirectional EV charging worth it?
It is potentially worthwhile when you already have a compatible EV, the vehicle is home for most high-risk outage periods, the incremental installed cost is lower than an appropriately sized stationary system and the warranty permits the intended cycling. It is less compelling when the car is frequently away, the home needs guaranteed backup at all times, substantial panel upgrades are required or the vehicle manufacturer limits discharge.
There is no universal winner because the sources do not provide a single independently comparable installed-cost dataset for V2H and stationary batteries, a universal degradation rate or a broadly applicable V2G payback figure. Make the decision with a load calculation and a written, location-specific quote rather than a battery-capacity headline.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Do I need whole-home backup or only selected circuits?
- How many kWh do those loads use on a typical outage day?
- What continuous and surge kW do they require?
- Will the EV be at home and plugged in when outages are most likely?
- Does the exact vehicle and charger combination support certified V2H?
- What reserve must remain for driving?
- What transfer, panel, permitting and utility work is included in the quote?
- Does the vehicle warranty explicitly allow the planned stationary discharge?
- Would a stationary battery still be needed if the EV is away?
- Am I assuming V2G revenue that no utility program has promised?
