Cars.com’s March 2026 listing snapshot put median prices for its three selected model-year choices between $9,000 and $12,000, so one of its picks was already above the cap at the median. Prices and inventory vary by location, mileage, trim, and condition.
Which used SUVs are worth considering under $10,000?
Cars.com’s April 29, 2026 shortlist screened for 2014 model year or newer, above-average J.D. Power reliability scores, and a model-year IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. Its March 2026 listing snapshot provides a useful starting point, not a live October 2026 price guide. The awards and reliability screening are editorial filters, not guarantees about a particular high-mileage vehicle.
| SUV and snapshot | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 Chevrolet Equinox About $10,000 median list price; 96,677 average listing miles |
Five seats, a spacious cabin and cargo area, and 18–26 mpg EPA-rated combined fuel economy across configurations. It received an IIHS Top Safety Pick award for the model year. A backup camera was standard for 2016. | V-6 and all-wheel drive were available on LS, LT, and LTZ trims; confirm the exact trim, engine, and drivetrain on the vehicle. The reported mileage average makes service records and a pre-purchase inspection especially important. |
| 2014 Mazda CX-5 About $11,000 median list price; 123,816 average listing miles |
26–29 mpg EPA-rated combined fuel economy across configurations and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. It is known for more engaging handling, with a firmer ride. The optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder helps address the debut year’s power shortfall. | At the reported median, it exceeds the budget; it fits only if a sound local example is listed below $10,000. Check which engine it has, whether the firmer ride suits you, and whether the multimedia system meets your needs. Rear-seat and cargo room are adequate, rather than especially generous. |
| 2014 or 2015 Subaru Outback About $10,000 median list price; average listing miles were 126,935 for 2014 and 125,281 for 2015 |
Standard all-wheel drive, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and 20–28 mpg EPA-rated combined fuel economy across configurations. The 2014 offered more engine and transmission combinations; the 2015 redesign looked more SUV-like and standardized the CVT. | Optional EyeSight included adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane-departure warning; verify that the individual car has it. Confirm the specific engine, transmission, equipment, and maintenance history. |
All prices, mileage figures, fuel-economy ranges, and award descriptions in this table come from Cars.com’s 2026 article and March 2026 listing snapshot. The mpg figures are EPA-rated ranges, not a promise of real-world results for every trim or drivetrain. Confirm the equipment and configuration on the exact vehicle you are considering.
What other models belong on the list?
Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 editorial list covers a broader range of ages and needs. It is not a current price survey, and a model’s inclusion does not mean every example will be under $10,000 in your market.

| Need | KBB’s examples |
|---|---|
| Compact, everyday crossover | 2012 Toyota RAV4; 2013 Honda CR-V. KBB presents these as compact all-rounders. |
| Family space or a third row | 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid; 2013 Honda Pilot. |
| Standard all-wheel drive | 2015 Subaru Outback; 2014 Subaru Forester. |
| Large vehicle or greater capacity | 2013 Ford Expedition; 2011 Chevrolet Suburban. These full-size SUVs serve different space, fuel-use, and ownership priorities from compact crossovers. |
| Five-passenger comfort-oriented crossover | 2015 Nissan Murano. |
For additional market candidates, iSeeCars’ 2026 subcompact SUV ranking reported average used prices of $9,082 for the 2016 FIAT 500X, $9,431 for the 2016 Chevrolet Trax, $9,122 for the 2016 Jeep Compass, and $9,803 for the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Those figures make them worth checking against local listings, but average price alone does not establish that a model is the best choice or that a particular vehicle is sound. The ranking’s analysis covered more than 12 million vehicles; that is its analysis base, not a count of under-$10,000 SUVs or owner experiences.
How to choose among the candidates
Start with the actual vehicle and your use case, not a model’s reputation. The lists span compact crossovers, an AWD wagon-like SUV, and full-size family vehicles; they are not interchangeable.

- Step-by-step procedures written from a complete teardown and rebuild, giving you the confidence to tackle repairs at any skill level.
- Over 700+ clear photos and diagrams that simplify complex systems, helping you complete jobs faster and with fewer mistakes.
- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
- Set a purchase ceiling that leaves room for repairs. Compare the asking price with your total available budget and reserve money for immediate maintenance rather than spending the full amount on the sale.
- Compare mileage with maintenance records. A lower odometer reading is not a substitute for documented service. Ask for receipts and look for evidence that routine and upcoming maintenance have been addressed.
- Match space and capability to your needs. Check seating, rear-seat comfort, cargo area, and, if relevant, towing capacity. A large SUV can offer more room but brings different fuel and ownership priorities than a compact crossover.
- Verify safety features on the specific car. A model-year IIHS award does not establish that every trim has the same equipment. Check the exact year, trim, drivetrain, and installed features, including optional driver-assistance systems.
- Choose drivetrain and fuel use deliberately. Standard AWD on the Outback may matter in your climate; the Equinox offered AWD only in specified trims. EPA combined ratings are useful for comparison, but configuration and driving conditions affect results.
- Use inspection findings to decide, not the shortlist alone. A vehicle with unresolved warning lights, leaks, damage, or erratic behavior may be a worse buy than a less celebrated model with clear records and a clean inspection.
What to inspect before buying
Cars.com’s inspection guidance, on a page dated September 19, 2024 whose editor note says it was last updated in 2022 and reviewed as still accurate, recommends checking records and the vehicle itself before purchase. Use it as a practical checklist, not as a newly issued inspection standard.

- Check identity and history. Match the VIN on the vehicle to its title and paperwork, then review a vehicle-history report. Treat a report as one source of information, not a substitute for examining the car.
- Look for visible damage and neglect. Inspect for rust, signs of repaired crash damage, fluid problems, water intrusion, and leaks. Cars.com suggests bringing a flashlight, towel or cardboard to lie on, hand cleaner, paper towels, and a small magnet for a visual inspection. These tools help you look; they do not diagnose mechanical condition.
- Start the vehicle and watch for warning signs. Note warning lights, unusual noises, and any erratic behavior. Ask questions about issues rather than assuming they are minor.
- Test-drive the vehicle. Pay attention to how it behaves, including unusual sounds or inconsistent operation. If something feels wrong, do not rely on the seller’s explanation alone.
- Arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection when practical. A trusted mechanic can assess concerns you may not be able to evaluate during a walk-around or short drive. Use the findings to negotiate, budget for repairs, or walk away.
