For a reliability-focused used Subaru shortlist, start with the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester—but judge the exact model year and the individual car, not just the badge. Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey summary named the Impreza Subaru’s most reliable model and the Crosstrek its third most reliable; the regular Forester was rated average. Those are model-line survey findings, not guarantees about every used example.
Which used Subaru models are the strongest starting points?
The available evidence supports a shortlist, not a definitive ranking of the best used model years. Consumer Reports’ model-level assessments have shifted between survey editions, and they do not establish that every car from a highly rated model line is dependable.
| Model | What the cited evidence says | What it means when shopping used |
|---|---|---|
| Impreza | Named Subaru’s most reliable model in Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey summary. | A sensible candidate to investigate, but no specific used year is established here as the best buy. |
| Crosstrek | Ranked third among Subaru models in the 2026 summary. | Shortlist it, then verify the exact year, records, condition, and recall status. |
| Forester | Rated average in the 2026 summary; the 2025 summary had rated it well above average. | Its evidence is encouraging but mixed across editions. Do not transfer a newer model’s rating to an older car. |
| Outback | Placed between above average and average in the 2025 summary; comparable year-by-year evidence is not established here. | Consider it based on the specific vehicle and your space needs rather than assuming a particular year is proven more reliable. |
| Legacy | Placed between above average and average in the 2025 summary; comparable year-by-year evidence is not established here. | A sedan option with a comfortable ride and roomy cabin, but consider its controls and standard-engine performance on a test drive. |
| Ascent | Placed between above average and average in the 2025 summary; comparable year-by-year evidence is not established here. | The available survey summary is not enough to rank its used years against the other models. |
Consumer Reports cautions against relying on brand rankings alone. Jake Fisher, its senior director of auto testing, said, “While brand rankings can guide you to the showroom, it is critical to also look at reliability for specific models before making a purchase decision.”
Why survey ratings do not identify a guaranteed reliable year
Consumer Reports predicts reliability from member-reported vehicle problems. Its cited methodology uses the latest three years of data when possible; for a redesign or a model with too few responses, expert judgment may also inform the prediction. The 2023 Forester review’s methodology described survey coverage of around 420,000 vehicles—across vehicles generally, not Subaru cars alone or one used model year. A predicted score is a forecast for a model, not an inspection or repair history for the car you are considering. The Forester illustrates why year-specific caution matters: its 2025 model sheet showed a predicted reliability score of 98/100 as of April 2025, while the 2026 survey summary rated the regular Forester average. The score applies to the 2025 model rating at that date, not to older Foresters or every 2025 vehicle. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Forester model sheet
What the Forester year indicators can—and cannot—tell you
The available 2025 Forester sheet marks 2019 and 2025 as redesign years. Its displayed survey indicators are weaker for 2018–2019, moderate for 2020, and generally stronger from 2021 onward. Treat that pattern as directional evidence for the Forester, not a guarantee about an individual car or a rule that applies to other Subaru models.

The available evidence does not establish comparable current year-by-year problem histories for the Impreza, Crosstrek, Outback, Legacy, or Ascent. It therefore cannot support a trustworthy list of specific “best” or “avoid” years across the Subaru range.
How to choose between the models
Reliability is only one part of a good used-car match. Compare similar examples of the same model and year, and weigh their service records, mileage, condition, recall completion, and inspection findings separately from the model-line rating.

- Durable Construction: Crafted from high-quality die-cast metal, this toy car is built to withstand rough play and handling.
- Impreza: Consider it if a smaller car suits your needs and you want to investigate the strongest current Subaru model-level survey signal.
- Crosstrek: Consider it if its size and body style fit your use; its survey position is strong, but it still needs a year-specific and vehicle-specific check.
- Forester: Consider it if you need a roomier SUV, while recognizing that its survey assessment differed between the 2025 and 2026 summaries.
- Outback or Ascent: Compare them if their space and utility fit better, but do not infer a specific reliable year from the broad 2025 model-line rating.
- Legacy: The reviewed generation began in 2020 and ended after model year 2025. The review highlights ride comfort and cabin space, but says the standard engine can feel strained and the infotainment and climate interface can require multiple steps. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Legacy review
Used Subaru buying checklist
- Get the complete VIN. Use Subaru’s recall lookup with the car’s full 17-character VIN. Ask the seller about open recall work and confirm completion with Subaru. Subaru recall information
- Ask for dated service records. Compare invoices with the Warranty & Maintenance Booklet for the exact model year. Subaru’s 2014 schedule, for example, calls for oil and filter replacement every six months or 7,500 miles; that interval is an example for 2014 and should not be applied to another year without checking its own schedule. Subaru maintenance schedules
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the engine, transmission or CVT, AWD system, suspension, brakes, tires, leaks, warning lights, and stored diagnostic codes. These are standard inspection checks, not claims that the cited evidence establishes Subaru-specific defect rates for those components.
- Compare like with like. Look at multiple examples of the same model and year so mileage, condition, records, and price do not get confused with a brand or model reputation.
- Review any CPO coverage in writing. If considering Subaru Certified Pre-Owned, inspect the vehicle-history report and confirm current eligibility, warranty dates and mileage limits, exclusions, transfer terms, and any optional Added Security coverage directly with Subaru.
