Toyota’s new Japan-market RAV4 is not a newly launched standalone naturally aspirated 2.5-liter vehicle. Toyota specifies a 2.5-liter A25A-FXS series-parallel hybrid system for the Z grade. Its Japanese list prices are ¥4,500,000 for Adventure and ¥4,900,000 for Z, including consumption tax. Comparing those figures directly with Chinese EV prices would be misleading: the markets, currencies, vehicle types and potentially the equipment differ.
Is the new Toyota RAV4 a 2.5-liter hybrid?
Yes. In its announcement of the new RAV4 in Japan, Toyota identifies the Z grade’s powertrain as a 2.5-liter A25A-FXS series-parallel hybrid system, paired with an electric continuously variable transmission and E-Four. For that reason, the “naturally aspirated 2.5L” framing needs qualification. The manufacturer’s description of the complete Z-grade powertrain is a hybrid system; it does not support presenting the RAV4 as a conventional, non-hybrid 2.5-liter vehicle. The cited announcement specifies this system for the Z grade, so it should not be generalized to every RAV4 grade.
How much does the new RAV4 cost in Japan?

Japan subscription option
Toyota also described the Adventure grade as available through KINTO in Japan. Its stated starting fee of ¥38,390 per month assumes a seven-year contract, no initial payment and two annual bonus payments of ¥165,000. Is the RAV4 priced like a Chinese electric SUV?
The available official figures do not establish price parity. Toyota’s Japan-market RAV4 prices are in yen, while GAC Toyota’s China-market lineup lists the bZ3X battery-electric vehicle from RMB 109,800. Those numbers refer to vehicles sold in different markets and use different currencies; one is a hybrid RAV4 and the other is a BEV. A useful comparison would need to match vehicles by body style and equipment, identify the market and date for each price, distinguish list prices from promotions, account for taxes and incentives, and use a dated exchange rate for currency conversion. Without those details, saying the RAV4 costs the same as a Chinese EV—or that it is cheaper—goes beyond what these figures show.

How does Toyota frame electrification?
Toyota presents electrification as a multi-pathway approach, saying that solutions should reflect customer and regional needs rather than rely on one technology alone. In a 2023 corporate announcement, the company set global average vehicle CO2 reduction targets of 33% by 2030 and more than 50% by 2035, both compared with 2019. What to check before buying or comparing
- Confirm the grade and powertrain: Toyota’s cited 2.5-liter hybrid specification is for the Japan-market Z grade.
- Use the Japan-market MSRP with its stated qualifications; do not treat it as a transaction price or a quote for another country.
- For a Chinese EV comparison, match vehicle class and equipment, market, date, tax treatment and incentives before drawing a price conclusion.
