If you’re replacing a Ford EcoSport, the best used small SUV depends on what you want to improve: choose the Honda HR-V for practical passenger and cargo space, the Subaru Crosstrek for standard all-wheel drive and outdoor use, or the Kia Soul for upright room and value if you don’t need AWD. The Hyundai Kona adds an available turbo engine, while the Chevrolet Trailblazer pairs generous cabin room with available AWD. There is no universal winner; compare the exact model year, trim, condition, and price before you choose.
How these SUVs compare with the EcoSport
In a 2023 comparative rating extract, Consumer Reports described the 2022 Ford EcoSport as agile to handle, easy to use, and easy to access. The same extract listed ride, noise, acceleration, cargo space, and transmission among its downsides, and said forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking were not available. That snapshot applies to the 2022 model in that comparison; equipment can vary by year, trim, and market. Consumer Reports comparative extract.

Model descriptions and budget guidance in the table reflect the January 2026 AP/Edmunds guide. Prices and availability change by location and over time.
#1 Best Overall
Choose by the problem you want to solve
Honda HR-V: practical space for everyday use
Pick the HR-V if passenger and cargo practicality matter more than quick acceleration. The AP/Edmunds guide praises its space and daily usability but flags slow acceleration. It says a 2022 example can fit the under-$20,000 budget frame used in the guide; that is not a guaranteed local price.
Hyundai Kona: turbo option and features
The Kona is the shortlist choice if you want a small SUV with sporty handling and an available turbo engine. The guide says the turbo-equipped version is quicker than most of its class and reports AWD availability across trims. Check the listing’s exact engine and trim rather than assuming every Kona has the stronger acceleration. The model debuted for 2018, was redesigned for 2024, and the guide identifies 2022 as an updated model year.

Kia Soul: upright room without an AWD requirement
The Soul’s upright cabin makes good use of its small footprint, with useful passenger room and cargo capacity. Its key limitation is decisive for some buyers: it has no AWD configuration. If AWD is a requirement for your winter driving or routes, consider another model. The latest generation debuted for 2020; the guide identifies the EX trim as a value choice.
Subaru Crosstrek: standard AWD and ground clearance
The Crosstrek is the clearest fit here for snowy driving, outdoor use, or buyers who want standard AWD and high ground clearance. The tradeoff in the guide is slow acceleration. It identifies the 2021 Sport and Limited trims as having a more powerful engine. Shoppers working within the guide’s under-$20,000 budget may need to look at 2021 or older examples.

Chevrolet Trailblazer: cabin room with available AWD
The Trailblazer offers ample headroom and legroom in both rows, useful cargo space, and available AWD. The guide describes acceleration with the base 137-hp turbo three-cylinder as leisurely. AWD versions receive the 155-hp engine as standard, so confirm drivetrain and engine on the specific vehicle. The latest generation arrived for the 2021 model year.
Mazda CX-3: a smaller-footprint older option
The CX-3 may suit a buyer looking at older, lower-budget SUVs who values a smaller footprint. In iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$15,000 ranking, the 2017 model has an estimated average used price of $14,641 and reliability score of 8.1/10. Those are iSeeCars estimates, not a current quote or a guarantee about an individual vehicle. The cited sources do not show that the CX-3 is the stronger all-around choice; assess its space, equipment, and condition in person.

Check the exact used vehicle, not just the model name
A model-wide score or a newer model’s award cannot settle whether a particular used SUV is a sound buy. Before deciding, verify the details that apply to the vehicle you are considering:
- Safety: Look up the specific model year and trim in the IIHS ratings. IIHS’s 2026 small-SUV award list includes the 2026 Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-30 as Top Safety Pick+ recipients; that award does not automatically apply to used 2016–2023 models. Check the applicable build eligibility.
- Equipment: Confirm the actual safety features fitted to that year and trim. The 2022 EcoSport’s Consumer Reports comparison, for example, says forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking were not available; do not generalize that finding to every year or market.
- Drivetrain and engine: Verify whether the vehicle is AWD and which engine it has, especially when comparing Kona and Trailblazer trims.
- History and condition: Review service records, mileage, recall completion, and prior damage, then arrange an independent inspection. A reliability estimate cannot reveal a particular car’s maintenance or accident history.
- Price: Compare local listings for similar years, trims, mileage, and condition. Published averages and budget examples are not live quotes.
