Alef’s February 2025 video showed a special ultralight version of its Model Zero prototype driving, taking off vertically and flying over a parked car. It demonstrated a controlled maneuver—not routine flight over public traffic, unrestricted permission to fly, or a commercially available flying car.
What the Alef video shows
The footage released by Alef on February 19, 2025, depicts the Model Zero Ultralight moving along a road, lifting vertically into the air, passing over another car, and coming back down. The vehicle in the demonstration was a special ultralight variant, according to the company’s announcement.

The video is evidence of that prototype performing that maneuver in the depicted setting. It does not establish how the vehicle would perform in routine traffic, in different weather, or in repeated flights. Alef’s description of the video as historically significant is the company’s characterization, not independently established historical priority.

How it flew over the parked car
Alef describes its vehicle as a road-and-air prototype, and the video shows a vertical takeoff followed by flight over the second car. The footage demonstrates the vehicle clearing an obstacle in a controlled test; it does not show the vehicle navigating a live road with moving traffic or people beneath its flight path.
#1 Best Overall
- Cabin: Three front ducts help circulate air through the cabin during parked car ventilation or daily commuting, creating a steadier pattern in stuffy interior conditions
- Clip On Window Setup: The clip mount supports window mounted installation without extra tools, making the fan easier to place for everyday ventilation needs in daily use cars
- ABS Housing Design: The ABS housing and front facing layout keep the controls easy to while supporting repeated use during commuting, roadside breaks, and parked car routines
- Included Essentials: Each set includes the main fan unit, a USB power cable, a user manual, and a window clip accessory, so the main setup pieces stay together for regular use
- Three Speed Control: The front control panel includes a visible power button and display lights, so you can choose gentler or circulation for changing cabin conditions
Alef said the city road was closed, the surrounding area was not densely populated, and no bystanders were under or near the flight path. Those are the company’s statements about the test conditions, not an independent safety assessment.
What the demonstration does—and does not—prove
- It demonstrates: Alef’s special Model Zero Ultralight prototype drove and performed a vertical takeoff and car-over-car flight in the released footage.
- It does not demonstrate: routine operation over open public roads, safe use in ordinary traffic, or general permission to fly anywhere.
- It does not establish: flight range or duration, maximum altitude, an independent safety evaluation, or broad consumer availability. The cited announcements do not provide those details.
Alef CEO Jim Dukhovny called the drive-and-flight test “an important proof of technology in a real-world city environment.” That is the executive’s view of the demonstration; it is not an independent technical verdict.

Does Alef have permission to fly it anywhere?
No such broad permission is established by the cited material. In a June 2023 announcement, Alef said the FAA had issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate, while also stating that the certificate restricted where and for what purpose the vehicle could fly. It should not be described as unrestricted FAA approval.
Alef’s announcement does not establish the current status of that certificate or the rules applicable to every potential test location. The video itself is not evidence that the prototype may be flown routinely over public traffic.

What Alef said about later testing and manufacturing
Airport integration plans
In August 2025, Alef announced agreements involving Half Moon Bay and Hollister airports and said it planned to test integration with other aircraft in common traffic patterns. The company said traditional aircraft would have right of way. It also described expanded alerting and AI obstacle-recognition features as plans; the announcement does not independently validate their safety performance.
Manufacturing and early tests
In December 2025, Alef said it had begun manufacturing the Model A Ultralight. The company described a few early vehicles as hand-assembled for early customers to use in real-world tests under controlled conditions, with training, compliance support, and maintenance. It said the process would help optimize manufacturing before automated mass production. That announcement does not confirm broad consumer deliveries or general availability.

How to read the car-over-car claim
Alef’s February release compared its demonstration with earlier runway, tethered, and electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing demonstrations as part of its claim about the video’s significance. That priority claim should be attributed to Alef unless independently corroborated. For a reader, the useful distinction is narrower: the released footage shows a prototype driving and then flying over a car in a controlled setting, while the company’s later announcements describe further testing and development—not ordinary public-road flying.
