“Toyota 2.7 engine” can refer to more than one four-cylinder engine, so the displacement alone is not enough to identify its specifications or parts. Toyota’s historical records distinguish the 3RZ-FE from the 2TR-FE. If you are researching a specific vehicle, confirm its model year, market, and engine code before relying on a specification or choosing a repair manual or part.
For the U.S.-market Tacoma examples covered here, Toyota rated its 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder with VVT-i at 159 hp and 180 lb-ft. That figure is specific to the cited Tacoma model years, not a universal rating for every Toyota 2.7-liter engine.
Which engine does “Toyota 2.7” mean?
It depends on the vehicle and year. Toyota records include at least two distinct 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine codes: 3RZ-FE and 2TR-FE. Toyota’s historical Hilux Surf record says the 2.7-liter unit changed from 3RZ-FE to 2TR-FE in 2004. The same history documents 3RZ-FE use in Hilux Surf and Land Cruiser Prado applications; those are examples, not a complete list of worldwide applications. Toyota Global’s historical vehicle specifications also identify 2TR-FE in representative Hiace grades.
For identification, use the vehicle’s model year, market, and engine code—not just “2.7.” That distinction matters when looking up specifications, repair instructions, or parts.

What are the published specifications?
| Application | Engine and published output | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Tacoma, 2011 model year | 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder; 159 hp and 180 lb-ft | Toyota USA Newsroom announcement in 2010. Toyota described VVT-i as providing low- and mid-range torque. Toyota listed a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic for the four-cylinder in that model year. |
| U.S. Tacoma, 2016 model year | 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder with VVT-i; 159 hp and 180 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm | Toyota USA Newsroom announcement in 2015. Toyota’s figure applies to this Tacoma specification. |
| Representative 2004 Hiace grades | 2TR-FE, water-cooled inline-four DOHC, 2,693 cc; 111 kW (151 PS) at 4,800 rpm | Toyota Motor Corporation Global historical specifications; the page describes representative grades, not every market variant. |
The Tacoma figures are U.S. model-year manufacturer specifications. The Hiace figures come from representative historical grades and use kW and PS. Because the vehicles, specification contexts, and units differ, these numbers should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison.
Toyota’s 2016 Tacoma announcement describes its engine as “A 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder with VVT-i that will produce 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm.” The statement is Toyota’s manufacturer specification, not a quote from a named engineer.

- [Enhanced Performance]: A-Premium Engine Air Filter uses fine filtration media to capture all kinds of debris without obstructing airflow, removing dangerous particles, improving engine performance and increasing engine efficiency
- [Replacement Suggestion]: To ensure that the engine air filter provides your engine with clean air, recommended replacement every 12 months, 12,000 miles or as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
How should you compare two Toyota 2.7 applications?
- Engine code: establish whether the application uses 3RZ-FE or 2TR-FE. Toyota’s historical records show these as distinct codes.
- Vehicle, year, and market: a U.S. Tacoma specification and a representative Japanese-market Hiace grade describe different applications.
- Output and units: keep the stated unit and engine speed with each figure. For example, Toyota gives the 2016 Tacoma torque at 4,000 rpm, while the Hiace figure is 111 kW (151 PS) at 4,800 rpm.
- Transmission and drivetrain: use the pairing listed for the exact vehicle and model year. Tacoma transmission options cited for one year should not be generalized to all Toyota 2.7-liter vehicles.
What should you check before buying a manual or part?
- Identify the vehicle’s model year and market.
- Verify the engine code using the vehicle’s identification details and applicable vehicle documentation.
- Match the repair manual or replacement part to that exact application. Where relevant, check explicitly whether it covers 3RZ-FE or 2TR-FE rather than relying on a “Toyota 2.7” label.
Toyota’s historical records establish that more than one engine code appears in 2.7-liter applications; they do not establish current aftermarket compatibility or inventory. Check the coverage and fitment details for the specific manual or part before buying.

The cited Toyota sources support manufacturer specifications and selected historical applications. They do not establish a universal output for every Toyota 2.7-liter engine, the current condition of a used vehicle, or independent reliability, lifespan, failure-rate, or efficiency comparisons. Fuel-economy estimates in a Tacoma announcement are tied to the stated vehicle configuration and should not be treated as general engine-economy figures.
