For a used SUV with a role closest to the Jeep Wagoneer, start with the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, GMC Yukon, and Nissan Armada. If your family needs even more room for luggage behind occupied seats, add the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL. Families willing to step down from full-size dimensions should also compare the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Toyota Grand Highlander.
The right choice depends on more than having three rows. Prioritize who will use the third row, how much cargo must fit with every seat raised, whether you tow, and whether the SUV works in your garage and daily routes.
Which used Wagoneer alternatives should families shortlist?
Compare full-size SUVs with other full-size SUVs first. Midsize three-row models may be more practical if you do not need the Wagoneer’s size, but they are not direct size matches.
| Vehicle | Class and role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Tahoe | Full-size, direct alternative | Compare the exact used year, engine, trim, seating layout, and condition. It is a candidate when passenger space and towing are priorities. |
| Ford Expedition | Full-size, direct alternative | In Edmunds’ tested comparison, its seats were more comfortable than the Wagoneer’s. Treat that as a finding about the tested vehicles, not every year or trim. |
| Toyota Sequoia | Full-size, direct alternative | Check the configuration carefully: Toyota’s 2024 comparison lists 22.3–11.5 cubic feet behind the third row, depending on configuration. The 2025 Sequoia tested by Car and Driver was the only hybrid in its six-SUV group. |
| GMC Yukon | Full-size, closely related category choice to Tahoe | Compare equipment and cabin finish by trim and model year instead of assuming the nameplate alone makes it a better fit. |
| Nissan Armada | Full-size, direct alternative | It appears in Car and Driver’s 2025 full-size comparison. The available comparisons do not establish used-year-specific reliability or ownership costs. |
| Chevrolet Suburban | Longer full-size choice | Consider it when cargo space matters with passengers aboard. Chevrolet claims 144.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume and more space behind each row than the Wagoneer L in its manufacturer comparison; this is not independent testing or a figure for every used model year. |
| GMC Yukon XL | Longer full-size choice | Consider it alongside the Suburban when you need a longer body; verify space, equipment, and seating for the specific year and trim. |
| Kia Telluride | Midsize three-row alternative | A used-car option for families who do not require full-size dimensions. Car and Driver describes it as spacious and a value; check the exact used example. |
| Hyundai Palisade | Midsize three-row alternative | Car and Driver describes it as comfortable, roomy, and high-class. The Telluride is mechanically related to the Palisade, according to the Associated Press account of Edmunds’ recommendations. |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | Midsize three-row alternative | It appears in used three-row SUV rankings and in Edmunds recommendations covered by the Associated Press. The cited ranking excerpt identifies 2024 examples but does not establish the best used year or local price. |
These comparisons do not provide a reliable all-model ranking for used prices or ownership costs. Treat online rankings and example starting prices as leads, not as evidence that a particular listing is fairly priced.

What matters most when comparing family SUVs?
Third-row access and passenger fit
Bring the people who will sit in the third row, or test with passengers of similar size. Check entry and exit with a child seat installed in the second row, then have passengers sit in the third row for long enough to assess comfort. Edmunds found easy third-row access and room for occupants over six feet in its tested Wagoneer, but also found its seats less comfortable than those in the tested Expedition and Tahoe. Those results should not be generalized to every model year or configuration.
Cargo space with every seat in use
Test the actual stroller, luggage, sports gear, or mobility equipment your family carries. A maximum cargo figure with rows folded does not tell you whether that gear fits while all seats are occupied. Use figures for the exact model year and configuration; Toyota’s 2024 Sequoia comparison, for example, gives a range behind the third row rather than one universal figure.

Comfort on the trips you actually take
Compare seat comfort, ride, cabin noise, climate controls, and passenger charging in the specific used vehicle. Published comparison findings describe the vehicles tested, not a universal winner across all years and trims.
Towing and powertrain
If towing is part of family life, identify the trailer’s weight and check the exact SUV’s engine, drivetrain, hitch, and equipment. Edmunds included towing in its comparison criteria, but the available comparison does not provide a complete model-year-by-model-year towing table. Do not choose from a nameplate-level towing claim alone.
Parking and daily maneuvering
Try the SUV in your garage or regular parking space, and drive the routes you use for school, errands, and activities. Car and Driver’s full-size comparison considered parking as well as third-row access and child-seat use; an SUV that fits the family but creates daily parking friction may not be the best fit.
Safety for the exact model year
Look up the specific year and relevant tests rather than relying on a current rating for a newer vehicle. IIHS’s open large-SUV table reports 2026 model ratings, including differing results for the Sequoia, Grand Wagoneer, Tahoe, and Expedition. Those results do not automatically apply to older used examples.

How to shop for the right used example
- Set your space requirement. Decide how often all three rows will be occupied and measure the cargo you need to carry at the same time. This helps determine whether a midsize model is enough or a full-size or longer-body SUV is warranted.
- Compare within the same class. Start with Tahoe, Expedition, Sequoia, Yukon, and Armada as full-size options. Add Suburban or Yukon XL if you need more room behind occupied rows; consider Telluride, Palisade, or Grand Highlander if you can trade down in size.
- Match the vehicle configuration to your needs. Check model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, seating layout, and towing equipment. For a used Sequoia, for example, Toyota’s 2024 comparison shows that third-row cargo capacity varies by configuration.
- Inspect the exact vehicle. Compare local listings with similar year, mileage, trim, drivetrain, and accident history. Review maintenance records and arrange an independent inspection; a listing, ranking, or vehicle-history report cannot establish the vehicle’s present mechanical condition on its own.
- Test the family’s real routine. Try the child seats, passenger access, cargo load, parking spaces, and routes that matter to you before choosing.
Figures and comparisons to interpret carefully
- 437 horsepower: Car and Driver’s tested 2025 Sequoia configuration paired a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 with an electric motor and produced 437 hp. It was the only hybrid in that six-SUV comparison group; this is not a specification to apply to every Sequoia year or trim.
- 22.3–11.5 cubic feet behind the third row: Toyota gives this range for the 2024 Sequoia depending on configuration in its model-year comparison. Confirm the specific seating and configuration before relying on it.
- 144.5 cubic feet maximum cargo volume: Chevrolet states this figure for the Suburban in its comparison with the Wagoneer L. It is a manufacturer claim for the compared product context, not an independent measurement or a value guaranteed for every used Suburban.
