The right replacement depends on the Subaru model, engine, year and failure concern. For a 2010–15 Forester or Outback, Consumer Reports points to the 2010–15 Honda CR-V; for a 2010–15 Legacy, the 2010–15 Toyota Camry; and for a 2012–13 Impreza with the cited oil-consumption concern, the 2012–14 Mazda3. If your specific concern is head-gasket risk in a 2011 Impreza, Consumer Reports separately lists the 2011–13 Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Mazda3.
Those are historical model-year recommendations, not a guarantee that every example is sound. Before buying any used replacement—or another Subaru—verify the exact vehicle’s records, VIN, recall status and mechanical condition.

The Subaru models in question appealed to buyers partly because all-wheel drive was standard on the cited vehicles. A replacement may have a different drivetrain configuration, so treat all-wheel drive, ground clearance, cargo layout and winter-tire fitment as buying requirements to verify—not assumptions carried over from the Subaru.
“Problematic four-cylinder” can describe two different risks
Oil consumption
Oil consumption means the engine is losing usable oil between services, usually by burning it or otherwise allowing it past seals or rings. A car can continue to run while the oil level falls, so a normal-feeling test drive does not prove that the engine is healthy. Running low can cause secondary damage, and a previous owner may have concealed the symptom by topping up the oil frequently.
Subaru’s own bulletin says, Some oil consumption should be expected as a by-product of engine operation.
The bulletin’s diagnostic threshold is much narrower than a claim that every engine fails: for the specified condition, testing must show consumption of more than one-third of a quart (10.6 fluid ounces) in 1,200 miles. That is a test threshold, not a failure rate for all Subaru four-cylinder engines.
Head-gasket failure
A head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and engine block. Failure can allow coolant and oil to mix, permit combustion gases into the cooling system, or cause external leaks. Overheating and major engine damage can follow if the problem is ignored. A head-gasket concern is therefore not interchangeable with an oil-consumption complaint: one car may have either condition, both, or neither.

Discussing why an inexpensive component can create major consequences, Consumer Reports chief mechanic John Ibbotson said, It is striking how such a simple component can lead to such catastrophic problems.
That observation explains why documentation of a completed repair matters more than a seller’s assurance that an engine is “fine.”
What Subaru’s oil-consumption bulletin actually covers
Service bulletin 02-157-14R, first dated August 28, 2014 and revised April 13, 2021, concerns a specified oil-control piston-ring condition. Its applicability depends on model year, engine, transmission and other vehicle details. The model name alone is not enough to establish coverage.
| Application listed in bulletin 02-157-14R | Engine or transmission qualification | Buyer’s implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2013–14 Legacy and Outback | 2.5-liter FB engines | Confirm the engine and VIN before treating the bulletin as relevant. |
| 2011–14 Forester | 2.5-liter FB engines | Do not assume every Forester engine or transmission is included. |
| 2015 Forester | Specified manual-transmission application | Transmission type is an eligibility detail, not a footnote. |
| 2012–13 Impreza and XV Crosstrek | 2.0-liter FB engines | Check the exact engine and VIN; the bulletin does not establish a blanket defect for all Imprezas. |
| 2014–15 Impreza and XV Crosstrek | Specified manual-transmission applications | Automatic and manual cars may not have the same eligibility. |
The bulletin describes a historical powertrain-warranty extension to 8 years or 100,000 miles from the original warranty start date, subject to eligibility and completion before the extension expired. In 2026, a used-car buyer should not assume that this extension is still available. Ask Subaru or a dealer to check the VIN, the original warranty start date, open campaigns and the repair record. The bulletin text is available through the published service-bulletin copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA documented short-block or piston-ring repair is materially different from a seller saying the car “doesn’t burn oil.” Request the invoice, mileage, date, parts description and the test results that led to the repair. If a claim was denied or never completed, price the vehicle as an unresolved mechanical risk rather than as a repaired example.

How to choose among the alternatives
If you are leaving a Forester or Outback
The CR-V recommendation is the closest direct substitute in the cited Consumer Reports comparison because it is another compact SUV from the same period. Start by listing what you actually used in the Subaru: rear-seat space, cargo height, roof-load needs, towing requirement, winter traction and ease of entry. Then inspect each CR-V candidate for its own maintenance and accident history. The recommendation does not make every CR-V equivalent to an Outback, and it does not eliminate the need to verify drivetrain configuration for snow or unpaved-road use.
If you are leaving a Legacy
The Camry is the cited same-period sedan alternative for the Legacy’s oil-consumption concern. Compare seating position, trunk opening, rear-seat needs and the equipment you require. A sedan chosen only because its model appears on a list can still be a poor purchase if its oil changes were skipped, it has unresolved warning lights or its prior owner ignored overheating.
If you are leaving an Impreza
For the 2012–13 Impreza oil-consumption issue, the cited alternative is the 2012–14 Mazda3. For a 2011 Impreza where the question is head-gasket risk, the cited choices expand to the 2011–13 Corolla, Civic and Mazda3. These are separate decision paths: do not substitute the oil-consumption recommendation for the head-gasket recommendation without first identifying the problem you are trying to avoid.
When all-wheel drive is non-negotiable
State that requirement before shopping. The Subaru examples offered standard all-wheel drive, while the alternatives may be configured differently. Verify the exact drivetrain from the vehicle identification number, build information and inspection; do not infer it from a badge, an online listing title or a seller’s description. If the alternative does not meet your traction requirement, it is not a practical replacement even if its engine history looks good.

A used-car buying procedure that screens for the known risks
- Record the exact identity. Write down the model year, trim, engine, transmission, mileage and VIN. The bulletin’s coverage changes with these details, and two cars with the same model name may not be equivalent.
- Build a dated service timeline. Ask for oil-change records, invoices and inspection reports. Look specifically for an oil-consumption test, short-block or piston-ring replacement, head-gasket repair, overheating event and any engine replacement. A verbal statement is not documentation.
- Ask who paid for the repair and when. An invoice should identify the repair facility, date, mileage and work performed. If the seller says a warranty campaign handled it, request the campaign or claim paperwork and have the VIN checked independently.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Use a mechanic who does not work for the seller. Tell the inspector that you are screening for oil consumption, prior overheating, head-gasket work and engine replacement. Give the inspector the records before the appointment so the examination can target unanswered questions.
- Have the inspector reconcile condition with paperwork. The inspection should determine whether the current engine, mileage and visible condition are consistent with the records and whether unresolved symptoms justify walking away or renegotiating. A short test drive is only one observation, not proof of long-term oil control.
- Check the VIN for recalls and campaigns. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-specific recall tools. NHTSA explains its recall and complaint datasets and APIs on its datasets and APIs page. Resolve open safety recalls before purchase when possible.
- Make the decision using the exact car. Compare the candidate’s records, inspection findings, drivetrain, cargo utility, winter needs, fuel use and purchase price with the Subaru you are replacing. A strong service history can outweigh a model-level concern; a neglected example can erase the advantage of a recommended model.
What an inspection can and cannot establish
Ask the inspector to document the present condition and to identify evidence of previous engine work. The inspector can review leaks, cooling-system condition, warning lights, maintenance quality and signs of an engine replacement as part of a normal professional evaluation, then recommend any additional testing warranted by the records. The important point is to disclose the specific concern in advance so the inspection is not limited to tires, brakes and a quick scan.
A basic code reader may show no active fault while an engine still consumes oil. Likewise, a brief drive may not reproduce a cooling-system or gasket symptom. Neither tool, by itself, rules out past oil starvation, a repaired head gasket or an intermittent problem. If the seller refuses an independent inspection or will not provide the VIN and records, treat that refusal as a reason to stop rather than as evidence that the car is clean.
Recall records and complaint data answer different questions
A recall lookup asks whether the manufacturer or NHTSA has identified a specific safety remedy for that VIN. A complaint database collects owner reports that can help regulators analyze safety trends. Complaint counts are not a controlled reliability rating and should not be used to rank a Camry against a CR-V, a Mazda3 against an Impreza, or one brand against another.
Use recall information to find open safety work, and use the maintenance file plus an independent inspection to judge the engine. If a complaint describes a symptom similar to the one you are screening for, ask the inspector whether the individual vehicle shows that symptom; do not treat the existence of complaints as proof that the car has the defect.

Warranty, repair and price decisions in 2026
Do not count on the historical Subaru extension
The 8-year/100,000-mile extension in bulletin 02-157-14R was measured from the original warranty start date and ended when the time or mileage limit was reached. Most vehicles in the listed 2011–15 range are now beyond that window. Only a VIN-specific confirmation can establish whether any coverage, campaign or previously approved repair remains relevant.
Value documented repairs correctly
A completed repair with dated invoices and post-repair records is a positive fact, not a guarantee of the rest of the vehicle. Check whether the work addressed the diagnosed condition, whether the engine was replaced, and whether subsequent oil-change intervals were maintained. A car with no repair record is not automatically defective, but you should not assign it the value of a documented repair.
Budget for uncertainty
There is no single repair price that applies to every oil-consumption or head-gasket case. Costs vary with the diagnosis, parts, labor rates, damage caused by overheating and whether the engine is repaired or replaced. Obtain a written estimate from a qualified shop before buying a car with an unresolved symptom, and compare that estimate with the price of a different inspected vehicle.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every Subaru four-cylinder defective. The bulletin covers specified applications, and no broad failure-rate statistic for all Subaru four-cylinder engines is established here.
- Confusing oil consumption with a head-gasket failure. They are different conditions and lead to different alternative recommendations.
- Applying a model-year list to every trim. Engine, transmission and VIN details can change bulletin eligibility.
- Buying on a clean dashboard alone. No warning light does not prove that oil level, cooling performance or previous repairs are satisfactory.
- Skipping records because the seller offers a warranty. Read the warranty’s exclusions, claim process and coverage period, and still obtain an independent inspection.
- Using complaint totals as a reliability score. Complaints are inputs to safety analysis, not comparative durability measurements.
- Assuming the alternative preserves Subaru’s utility. Confirm all-wheel drive, cargo dimensions, seating, ground clearance and winter equipment for the exact replacement.
A practical decision rule
First identify whether the Subaru concern is oil consumption or head-gasket risk. Next match the vehicle being replaced to the corresponding model-year alternative in the table. Then reject any candidate—Subaru or otherwise—that lacks a verifiable VIN, credible service records or permission for an independent inspection. Among the cars that pass those checks, choose the one whose drivetrain, cargo needs, location, budget and documented condition fit your use.
This approach is deliberately narrower than declaring one brand universally safer. The cited recommendations are historical and model-specific; the condition of the individual used car remains the deciding evidence.
