LUBEGARD Instant Shudder Fixx is a directly relevant additive to consider for torque-converter lock-up shudder—but it is not a guaranteed fix for every vibration or a substitute for a vehicle-specific repair procedure. Check your transmission type, required fluid, and manufacturer service guidance first. A “rumble-strip” sensation can have causes other than torque-converter-clutch (TCC) shudder.
Which transmission shudder additive is worth considering?
LUBEGARD lists Instant Shudder Fixx, part 19610, in a 2 oz size and describes it as a concentrated friction modifier formulated for torque-converter lock-up shudder. The manufacturer lists Amazon among its retailers. Those are product and availability statements from LUBEGARD, not independent evidence that the additive will resolve a particular vehicle’s problem. The reviewed sources establish one directly relevant additive candidate, not a comparative test that can support a definitive “best” ranking. They also do not establish an independent success rate or show that an additive repairs a damaged torque converter or other mechanical fault.
Is Instant Shudder Fixx compatible with your transmission?
LUBEGARD says the product works with conventional or synthetic automatic transmission fluid, but excludes continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), and Ford Type F applications in 1986 and earlier models. Check the owner’s manual and the product’s current label against the exact transmission and required fluid before adding anything. LUBEGARD product information
#1 Best Overall
- Instantly eliminates torque converter shudder
- Provides four times less wear than regular ATF
- The original transmission shudder fix
- Voted top product by transmission professionals
- Pause before using it if your vehicle has a CVT or DCT, or falls under the stated Ford Type F exclusion.
- Follow vehicle-specific service information if the owner’s manual, service bulletin, or repair procedure calls for a particular fluid or treatment.
- Get the symptom diagnosed if you are unsure which transmission is installed or what fluid it requires.
How to decide between an additive and a repair procedure
Shudder describes what a driver feels; it does not identify the cause. GM bulletin 16-NA-175 describes a light-throttle shake or shudder in specified North American vehicles with certain 8-speed transmissions. It requires diagnostic testing to determine whether the TCC is involved. In confirmed cases, the bulletin specifies a flush procedure using new DEXRON HP fluid; it is not a general instruction for other vehicles. The bulletin says, “Vibrations not identified as shudder should be further investigated using the ‘Vehicle Vibration Diagnosis and TAC Requests for Assistance with Vibration Related Complaints’ Bulletin.” GM bulletin 16-NA-175 (June 2016)
A later GM bulletin, 23-NA-072, applies to a different defined group of vehicles. It describes possible low-speed shudders or shakes that may involve TCC shudder or poor control, and notes that fluid may be contaminated and/or the torque converter damaged. It directs diagnosis and repair under that bulletin. This is another reason not to select an additive based on the sensation alone. GM bulletin 23-NA-072 (September 2024)
These bulletins apply only to their listed applications. If your vehicle is not covered, they do not establish the correct service for it. Use service information specific to your make, model, year, and transmission.
What the manufacturer says about use and repeat treatment
LUBEGARD’s FAQ characterizes Instant Shudder Fixx as a quick fix. It says an additional treatment may be used if the shudder returns, but not again unless the fluid has been completely changed. The FAQ also recommends the company’s ATF Protectant for long-term benefits. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations; the reviewed sources do not independently verify their effectiveness. Rank #3
- For best performance, follow the manufacturer's recommendations in your vehicle owner’s manual.
- Excellent on track performance
- Extraordinary protection
- Prevents wear and tear
When to seek diagnosis instead of trying an additive
- The vehicle uses an excluded transmission type or fluid application.
- A manufacturer procedure specifies a fluid service, software procedure, or repair.
- The shudder persists, worsens, or returns, or a warning light appears.
- You cannot confirm whether the symptom is TCC shudder rather than another vibration.
In these cases, a qualified technician can identify the cause and check whether the vehicle has a service procedure that applies. The appropriate fix may differ depending on the diagnostic findings.
