Which Toyota hybrid SUV uses the least gas?
Among the conventional hybrids in this lineup, the Corolla Cross Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid are the fuel-economy-first choices. Toyota lists the Corolla Cross at 46/39 mpg city/highway and up to 42 mpg combined; it lists the RAV4 Hybrid at up to 47/40/43 mpg city/highway/combined. Because the Corolla Cross and RAV4 figures are presented differently, do not compare the Corolla Cross’s 42 combined figure directly with a RAV4 city or highway number. Check each exact trim’s rating and compare like with like.
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is a different case. Its 102 MPGe combined figure is an electric-equivalent efficiency measure, not a gasoline MPG rating, and its 52-mile electric range is not a promise of how far it will travel on every charge. How much gasoline it uses depends in part on charging and driving conditions; compare it separately from conventional hybrids.

Consider the space and equipment you need as well as the rating—fuel economy alone does not establish which vehicle is the better fit.

The Highlander Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid are the three-row choices. Toyota lists the Highlander Hybrid XLE at 35/35/35 mpg city/highway/combined, and the Limited and Platinum at 35/34/35. Toyota lists the Grand Highlander Hybrid at 36/32 mpg city/highway and up to 36 mpg combined, with seating for up to eight. Its listed cargo capacity is 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 97.5 cubic feet with seats folded.

The Sequoia is listed at 21/24 mpg, with 437 horsepower and up to 9,500 pounds of towing capacity. Those capabilities come with lower published fuel-economy figures than the Corolla Cross Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid.
For plug-in flexibility
Choose the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for consideration if you have regular access to charging and want to evaluate electric driving alongside gasoline use. Keep Toyota’s 40 mpg combined, 102 MPGe combined and 52-mile EPA-estimated all-electric range separate: they describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to compare Toyota’s MPG figures fairly
- Match the measure. Compare city with city, highway with highway, and combined with combined. A city/highway pair is not itself a combined rating.
- Check the trim. Highlander Hybrid ratings vary by trim, and “up to” ratings may not apply to every configuration. Confirm the specific vehicle’s estimate.
- Separate plug-in metrics. MPG measures gasoline fuel economy; MPGe expresses electric-equivalent efficiency; electric range estimates distance on battery power. Charging access and driving conditions affect gasoline use in a plug-in.
- Treat ratings as estimates. Toyota’s figures are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results or a guaranteed real-world outcome. Toyota notes mileage varies with vehicle condition and how and where it is driven.
- Weigh the job the SUV must do. Three rows, cargo room, towing and off-road capability can matter more than achieving the highest published MPG.
How much gas will a Toyota hybrid SUV use in real life?
The published ratings let shoppers compare Toyota’s estimates, but they do not establish one real-world MPG number for every driver. Toyota’s sources provide no independent test results or single observed fuel-consumption figure for these models. Vehicle condition and driving conditions affect mileage, so use the exact vehicle’s EPA estimate as a comparison point rather than a guarantee.
Price and availability can also change, and purchase price alone does not determine total fuel savings. Check current Toyota model and dealer information when comparing specific vehicles.
