The right truck-bed spare tire mount depends on the tire and wheel you actually carry, your truck’s bed material and layout, and how often you need to reclaim cargo space. The options below are manufacturer-described products, not independently ranked or road-tested mounts. Before buying, verify fitment and installation requirements for your exact truck and spare.
How to choose a truck-bed spare tire mount
- Check the spare assembly. Match the tire’s diameter and width, wheel offset, and bolt pattern to the carrier’s specifications. A vendor’s “universal” label does not establish fitment for every truck or wheel.
- Confirm the bed and mounting location. Check the bed material and the product instructions before drilling or bolting. Consider where the tire will sit and whether it could interfere with cargo, the tailgate, a tonneau cover, or other accessories; the product pages below do not establish universal clearances.
- Choose how you want to use the bed. A vertical bedside position can preserve much of the bed floor, while removable designs may help when you need the space. Check what hardware remains attached after removing the carrier.
- Read the installation instructions before purchase. Drilling is a permanent modification, and some vehicle-specific systems are intended to remain installed. If your truck or wheel setup is not explicitly covered, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer.
- Separate retention features from security proof. Lock holes or lockable structures are features, not evidence of comparative theft resistance or tested performance under every driving condition. Confirm whether a compatible lock is included or sold separately.

Which mount fits your priorities?
If preserving the bed floor matters
Compare the vertical bedside options, including the Extreme Max and the Hummer EV-specific GMC system. The GMC carrier is for the Hummer EV Pickup and has rails intended to remain fixed, so it is not a general-purpose choice. With any vertical mount, check how the tire affects access and clearance in your particular bed.
If you want to clear the bed when hauling cargo
Rough Country describes its universal carrier as removable from the top of the bed, while Chassis Unlimited describes a four-pin quick release. Those descriptions do not establish how much time removal takes or how much hardware remains on a particular truck; check the installation documentation and mounting arrangement.

If you drive a Tacoma
The Rough Country Tacoma carrier is listed for 2016–2023 Tacoma models and adjusts for tire size and wheel offset, but it requires drilling. Confirm that your model year and wheel setup match the current listing before purchase.
If your truck has an aluminum bed
Extreme Max expressly excludes aluminum beds for its 5001.5828. That restriction should not be generalized to every carrier: check the exact instructions for any other product before installation, and do not assume a mount is suitable for aluminum unless its manufacturer says so.
